Man of Steel is an ok Movie – But The Donner Cut of Superman II Reign Supreme July 9, 2013

Been a little busy – so a little behind on reviews…

Man of Steel is the best Superman movie since Superman II – and yeah we know it’s not saying much. Yeah we like the basic story and sure we like the actors too.

The problem with Man of Steel is the action.

That’s right the action.

When Superman destroys the world maker and zod’s ship that should’ve been the end of it. Instead we get Zod kneeling before Kal-el and extended fight seen which was quite frankly overdone and boring. The ending with Clark joining the Daily Planet was kinda cutesy too.

YES we HAVE been very EXCITED about the new Man of Steel for months.

With the big release a little more than a week away, we’re even more excited than ever – thanks in part to a new 13 minute Behind The Scenes feature.

Long story short – no red underwear – cuase the S is not for Super it’s a symbol of hope and FFS who wears their underwear outside their pants?

Superman Returns SUCKED. we all know that. We all also know it sucked even though the initial trailer was pretty solid.

The problem with Superman Returns is that it was about Superman/Lois/his son triangle and that just didn’t work.

Man of Steel – set for release in 2013 now has an awesome trailer out. While trailers are usually good – this one give us lots of hope that the movie will be awesome too. This is more aligned with the current Action Comics/Superman approach where Superman is not univerally welcomed to Earth, there is fear about him (he’s an alien after all).

That makes a lot of sense and it sure has worked really well in the comics.

Then of course, while Lex Luthor is always good for a laugh, no Superman villian is better than Zod for movie lovers. Superman II was one of the best superhero movies of all time because of the bad guys – Zod and his cohorts from the phantom zone.

In Man of Steel – ZOD returns.

The other thing that is different is instead of simply paying homage to the original Superman movies – Marlon Brandon will not be back from the dead to play Jor-EL. Instead Russel Crowe will play Jor-EL (and Kevin Costner as Clark’s Earth dad). What an awesome combo.

No this doesn’t look like Smallville either – this is Superman and finally the Man of Steel has returned.

We all know how Clark Kent’s story will end…

But is sure is taking aa loooooooooong time to get there.

Finally, Clark has decided that Clark Kent is the disguise, and he’s taken the glasses…HA! well that and the bumbling buffoon act too…

So when do does he bulk up and get the cape and the tights?

Smallville is coming to an end on May 13, 2011 at 8 pm.

That’ll be it, no more and finally…finally…

THE BLUR WILL BECOME SUPERMAN.

We’ve waited 10 yrs for this and I think we’ve waited long enough.

“Paying homage to 10 seasons is no small task, and wrapping up each character and story arc has been extremely important to everyone involved in the show,” said executive producers Brian Peterson and Kelly Souders in a statement. “We’re excited to be able to make the final moments of SMALLVILLE a television event, as the character we’ve grown up with makes his legendary transformation.”

Icarus was a fine episode of Smallville ..the only thing that mattered in this episode was the end..

THE DEATH OF HAWKMAN.

Still shocking to us, Michael Shanks of course is such a fine actor…but it was great to see him in full winged gear fighting Col. Saul Tigh.

A bit of a corny episode this week — General Lane, played by the always affable Michael Ironside, make his return and apparently he doesn’t care for the vigilantes…no surprise there..

BUT he does like the Blur being Lois’ special protector..

Yeaah a bit of a weak episode, but Lois’ dad did have to give Clark his blessing we suppose…

After 10 long years…Lois finally and officially knows that Clark is the Blur.

WOW.

That was emotional.

All it took was a weird round-about story about Isis and Osiris and the sideshow with Tess and the boy clone Lex.

But finally – now Clark will move forward to become the real hero he is destined to become.

Why has this taken so long? Hey if you could milk a show for 10 yrs……

This final season of Smallville is amazing isn’t it?

Episode 2 of the final season of Smallville was another solid episode – officially titled Shield

saw the return of Michael Shanks aka Daniel Jackson aka Hawkman – and that was reason enough to watch this show.

The whole discussion of Nietche’s Ubermench — the Superman – was awesome and show the depth that this show truly has.

Cat Grant was interesting and Deadshot is one sharpshooting villain.

Great stuff (and if you missed it Amazon has it on demand)

Smallville Season 10 Episode 1 –Lazarus was a decent way to kick off the final season of Smallville.

Alot revolves around the whole idea of Kal-El finally putting on the costume – leaving the Blur behind and finally becoming superman – this is the season when it MUST happen and this first episode set that tone.

Why is Jor-El such a jerk? We don’t know…but he sure came off that way moreso this episode than before…and the whole Tess with the boy version of Lex thing was a little….weird too.

But hey good entertainment and we’re looking forward to great final season!

Smallville’s Season 10 means its time for us to watch 9 years worth of episodes September 20, 2010

OK, we’ll admit it. We have not seen every episode of all 9 seasons (to date) of Smallville..

But that’s now going to change. You see, the final season – season 10 – of Smallville starts this week, and though we haven’t followed this show from the beginning (usually due to the WB/CW’s weird programming time), we’re now fully hooked.

The teaser trailer for Season 10 – reminded us of how much we’ve missed so, in honor of the final season, we’re going to get all nine seasons and watch ’em all (on rain days, late nights, weekends..). Getting all nine seasons is no small task or expense — though Amazon has some decent pricing that we might be taking advantage of, if we can’t get this cheaper at our local Blockbuster.

We’ve long been big fans of alternate universes/history.

Now we’ve got (yet another) Superman alternate reality, this time it’s one in which Jor-El didn’t send his baby son Kal-El to Earth all alone.

This time the whole El family comes to Earth!

It’s a great twist to see how things develop and how the Kent’s still find a way to be involved in the storyline.

Instead of a Fortress of Solitude – there is the El Tower – and a ship with a 12th level intelligence..

and oh yeaaaah at the end of this first issue..Kal-El ends up with a pair of siblings too.

Brilliant storytelling and magnificent artwork makes this a must-read for all Superman fans.

Superman #700 What’s Next after New Krypton? July 7, 2010

Superman #700 – wow..how many titles last so long?

This is an omnibus with a few interesting stories – and a few not so interesting ones.

There is a ‘cute’ little story about Superman helping out Robin (Dick Grayson) which we enjoyed.

On the – not so enjoyable side — Superman after the monumental events of New Krypton – has some second thoughts about his hero stature..after a woman whose husband he could not save slaps him.

Look – superman can’t save everyone right? So why did he get so down?

This is the direction of the new Superman creative team – and NO WE DON’T LIKE IT.

New Krypton was an awesome story arc – but a moody superman that is examining his own shortcomings isn’t a superman that we personally find all that entertaining.

Superman of the Batman Beyond Future Driven from Metropolis in Superman Batman Annual #4 June 15, 2010

Surprisingly SUPERMAN/BATMAN ANNUAL #4 is a very good comic.

We get a glimpse of a future Metropolis and Superman, that we rarely see…one that has been beaten by both time and Luthor.

Luthor is the mayor-for-life of Metropolis and he’s feeding the people of the city with trace amounts of kyrptonite so Kal-El can barely even set foot in his own adopted city.

On the other side is the future Batman Beyond – Terry McGinnis – still a bit unsure of himself and in need of Bruce Wayne’s help.

Yeaaah it’s a little odd in a few parts where McGinnis goes under-cover, and Luthor spots him..and then McGinnis somehow quickly ‘transforms’ into Batman…that slight mis-queue notwithstanding…this was a fun and entertaining standalone story.

It’s always great to see the FUTURE of Superman and this is one future where the man of steel is more like rusted steel, but hey still workin on saving the day…

Superman New Krypton Saga Ends – The Best Superman Story Ever Told!! June 1, 2010

That’s it. The New Krypton saga is now over.

War of the Supermen #4 marks the end of a saga that in our opinion — is one of the greatest Superman story arcs of all time.

It began with Kandor coming out of the bottle and ending up as a city on Earth – then they got their own planet and called it New Krypton — that got blowed up real good so the Kryptonians came to Earth to trash it.

The trashing of Earth – that’s the basic War of the Supermen story and it comes to an end in War of the Supermen #4.

In the end, General Zod gets banished back to the Phantom Zone, General Lane dies and Metropolis goes back to its (not so) normal self.

Overall the New Krypton saga has been an incredible ride. We saw the first issue on the stands and it was the first time we actually bought a Superman title in at least ten years.

It was New Krypton that pulled us back into the Superman universe. Here we had the Man of Steel, as not unique- but being one among many. A superman on a planet of supermen. On New Krypton, Superman was just Kal-El. He was a ‘regular’ guy and he ‘technically’ for a time reported to Zod and even took over for Zod when Zod was out of commission for awhile.

Ohh and the ending of this story is nothing short of brilliant with the great prose of Lois Lane:

One Kryptonian came to Earth and helped make it a better place.

We made him our greatest hero.

100,000 Kryptonians came and they were seen as a threat. They were met with suspicion, hatred and eventually death. We–humanity–were incapable of accepting what they had to offer, accepting that change, so we lashed out at them. Destroyed them.

New Krypton gave us a different perspective on Kal-El and one that we looked forward to reading often and regularly. Will we now continue to pick up Superman titles? That remains to be seen, but now that the New Krypton saga is done, how can anything else not be a letdown at this point?

Really?? NO WAAAAY.

This comic book is all about one thing – the destruction of New Krypton.

No we didn’t see this coming. After two years of following the New Krypton saga, we’ve grown fond of the place.

New Krypton/Kandor has been part of the Superman universe for what 40 years or more at this point? and now it’s GONE.

Unbelievable.

And all destroyed by Luthor/Lane via Reactron — killer of Supergirl’s dad too – now killer of her mom and Kandor itself.

We’re still in shock.

Following directly after Last Stand of New Krypton #2 – where Kandor gets rebottled..

General Zod (KNEEL BEFORE ZOD!!) figures out how to get out of the bottle.

Man that was fast.

A bit too fast.

Then again after having been trapped in the bottle for so long the first time, it shouldn’t be a big surprise that he figured a way out right?

Zod also shows his true colors fighting Connor and saying he’d use him as a pawn against Kal-el. Good old Zod — we knew you couldn’t stay a decent being for long.
