January 31, 1958 – US Explorer 1 Launched Beginning The Space Race January 31, 2008

It was fifty years ago today that the US got its act together and launched its first satellite. Yes the US was behind the USSR with Sputnik but Explorer is not just a matter of historical Trivia. It was also the true beginning of the US Space Program’s Golden Era that a decade later landed the first man on the moon.

The satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral (now Cape Kennedy) in Florida at 10:48 P.M. EST on 31 January 1958 by the Jupiter-C vehicle–a special modification of the Redstone ballistic missile–that was designed, built, and launched by the Army Ballistic Missile Agency (ABMA) under the direction of Dr. Wernher Von Braun. Jupiter-C, a direct descendant of the German A-4 (V-2) rocket, was originally developed in 1955-1956 as a high-performance rocket for testing purposes.

NASA has put together a really tight site all about Explorer 1 – so get your fix of space history!

Ahsoka Tano – Anakin Gets a Padawan in new Star Wars Clone wars series January 30, 2008

In a major new canon development in the Star Wars Universe – Lucas is giving Anakin Skywalker a Padawan of his own.

Her name is Ahsoka Tano.

First of all I think it’s great that Anakin gets a Padawan. It’s something that has been missing from the young Darth Vader’s story for the last 30 years.

While it will be interesting to see the interaction of Tano and Skywalker in the new Clone Wars series.

What will also be interesting to see is how Lucas expands the character in other timelines…for example: Is she killed by Vader or Clone Troopers in the Jedi Purge?

Star Trek XI : Kobayashi Maru – Will we finally see Kirk’s solution? January 30, 2008

Though J.J Abrams has given up some details about Star Trek XI, some key elements are still ‘officially’ unknown.

HOWEVER – since we know this will include the early days of Kirk before he takes command of NCC-1701 – ShowMeSciFi.com is going to go out on a limb and state:

“In Star Trek XI we will finally see James T. Kirk take the Kobayahsi Maru test at Starfleet Academy.”

For years, we the fans have wondered exactly what Kirk did to pass that critical Starfleet examination (we know he ‘cheated’ or changed the rules as he says) – it will be MONUMENTAL to finally see the actual scene. The Kobayashi Maru is a defining test in a Starfleet officer’s career , presenting trainees with an impossible scenario and seeing how they respond.

As a refresher check out the first theatrical mention of the Kobayashi Maru in a STar Trek movie.

No question that Star Wars : The Force Unleashed could be the most awesome Star Wars game of all time.

No question that the Wii is an awesome platform.

Put the two together and what will get?

Lucas Arts recently did a media event and the specifics of how the Wii will control the Force were among the items discussed.

The Wiimote and Nunchuk act as the left and right hands for controlling force and lightsaber actions.

There are five lightsaber movements with the remote: right to left, left to right, downswing, uppercut and stab.
All of the force powers (with the exception of throwing the lightsaber) are controlled with nunchuk movements – the force push, for example, is triggered by thrusting it forward – while holding buttons switches to lightning and grab attacks.

Star Trek XI Could be the First of Three New Trek Movies January 29, 2008

YUP. Looks like Paramount isn’t just doing a one off with Star Trek XI which could be a good thing if the movie is any good.

In an interview with IGN , Anton Yelchin (playing Checkov) said that he had been signed on for three movies.

That clearly means Paramount is serious about this new Trek and is ensuring that if it is successful that they can milk the cast for everything they can.

And hey it also opens up the opporunity for Shatner to make an appearance in Star Trek XII or XIII!

Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles in Repeats already?? January 28, 2008

We’ve only had three episodes of Sarah Connor Chronicles – and it looks like we’re into REPEATS already!!

The official Fox Terminator site (which is useless when it comes to actually providing up to date information for fans) give no such indication that this week’s show is a repeat.

What’s the point of having a repeat so early in a season? If FOX is trying to kill this show off it’s doing a fine job with this stunt.

Sure Pres Bush has a State of the Union address at 9 ET but that doesn’t mean FOX couldn’t have had a new show at 8 PM. Make no mistake about it FOX KILLED FIREFLY with similiar mis-steps…let’s hope they don’t do the same to Sarah Connor Chronicles

harmony.jpgSome episodes of Stargate Atlantis are funnier than others…This one sure had at least two real keepers.

Taking a page from Han Solo (in Star Wars IV), Sheppard picking up the Jenai radio and answereing the question – what’s your status? with..

“Good,” Sheppard said

“Clarify” the Jenai on the Radio asks.

“Very Good, ” Sheppard replies.

Oh and at least one member of the ShowMeSciFi.com team found the final scene with the picture behind the throne (with Rodney the hero and Sheppard cowering ) to be quite hilarious.

While Torchwood’s actors are really solid and the plots are great..once again the low budget BBC special effects make this show a joke.

The ‘fish’ alien in the beginning of the episode was such a poor mask and totally unbelievable. And what was with all the same 1977 era Star Wars holoprojections? come on…it’s 30 yrs later get with the times.

But hey if you can look beyond the low budget special effects there is a show to watch. Jack and John – neat. Gwen taking full control also great.

The actors make this show work – always have – and hopefully they will for a long time to come too.

For whatever reason we had the sudden urge to find some Star Trek Deep Space Nine (DS9) toys. Likely it’s because when I looked at the shelf I suddenly realized that DS9 is poorly represented in the collection. No James Doohan’s son won’t have the role of Scotty in Star Trek XI but he will have a role.

According to an interview he did with TrekMovie the younger Doohan isn’t quite sure of his role ..yet

At this point, I’m tentatively scheduled to go in later next week to film, but, like James Cawley, I still don’t know exactly what I’m going to do. I can tell you that my father would be happy with my position on the ship.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAwww isn’t that nice. Now why can’t they find a spot for Shatner!!!

vector1.pngStar Wars Vector – the comic book event of the year is coming next week from Dark Horse.

All Dark Horse Star Wars titles will be pulled in stretching a massive 4,000 year scope.

There has been massive speculation about how it all ties together with few details shared thus far.

vector2.pngBut in a set of preview panes that Dark Horse has made available for the first issue of Vector (appearing in Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic #25)

It clearly looks like they’re going to draw the connection very early on .

Hard to say quite what the issue is but until i see otherwise i think it’s a massive Sith…not the Dark Jedi Sith..the ancient Sith..plot spanning the generations.

Then again with Vader apparently fighting alongside Luke and Cade Skywalker as well as Zayne Carrick maybe the Sith aren’t the prob…. we’ll find out soooon!

Which Terminator Model is the Best? January 24, 2008

Awesome article up on Popular Mechanics this month breaking down all the various Terminator models from the first T-800 model up to the unknown model in Sarah Connor Chronicles (Summer Glau’s ‘Cameron).

Easily the most awesome in my view is the T-1000 (the one made of liquid metal in Terminator 2). That robot could change its shape and was the first to do so.

After that it’s all just about strength which is  difficult to measure and then intelligence and personality. Which is where Cameron fits in ..sure she’s strong but she was specifically designed for a purpose..and we’ll find out as the series goes on what that purpose really is all about.

New Star Trek XI Starfleet Uniform January 24, 2008

Until now most Starfleet Uniforms have been military yet not militaristic (if you know what I mean

Sure in ‘Yesterday’s Enterprise’ we saw a stiffer collar as the Federation battled the Klingons but…

Star Trek XI is going the Imperial route..or so it would seem.

JFXonline has posted some intriguing pics of the new Starfleet uniform.

It really does look like a knock off from Star Wars Imperial wardrobe with the hat and all.

Never before have we seen Starfleet personnel with hat as part of the Uniform. It also looks like they’re tossing out the oh-so-hip shirt look off the classic series and the vested look of the early Star Trek movies too.

Too early to say what this is all about..but one thing is for sure – J.J Abrams is messing with alot of stuff.

If you’ve got the cash Richard Branson has got a sweet ride for you to get into orbit. Today Branson’s Virgin Galactic showed of designs for the successor to SpaceShipOne – the White Knight Two (WK2) mothership and the SpaceShipTwo transport

According to Virgin Galactic they’ve already had c 85,000 registrations of interest to fly. Already 80 of SpaceShipTwo’s first passengers have been through medical assessment and centrifuge training.

“The designs of both the mothership and the new spaceship are absolutely beautiful and surpass any expectations for the future of commercial spaceflight that we had when first registering the name Virgin Galactic in 1999,” Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Galactic said in a statement. ”

Virgin Galactic will make further announcements regarding the progress of the launch system, development of its markets, the test flying program and start of commercial operations at Spaceport America in due course.

Check out the full pics of the craft (and they’re big) over on Virgin Galactic’s Press site.

Teen Titans Lost Annual : JFK Abducted by Aliens January 23, 2008

There have been conspiracy theories about the shooting of JFK for years.

Teen Titans Lost Annual #1 has a very interesting ‘comic’ take.

In a nutshell JFK is abducted by Aliens (who look like clones of The Beatles) to lead them in battle against other aliens.

While JFK is in space, he’s replaced on earth by a clone and it is the clone that is assassinated.

JFK himself remains in outer space leading various Alien species to peaceful negotiations with their neighbors.

Weird stuff but a fun read that is highly recommended if you can find a copy of this issue.

NCC-1701.COM Watch Star Trek XI ‘s Enterprise being built January 22, 2008

Time to get excited Star Trek XI fans.

Looks like there is an UNDER CONSTRUCTION site for Star Trek XI’s NCC-1701.

The site? Why it’s of course — what else would it be?

There are four cameras of the shipyard (i’m still hoping it’s Utopia Planetia) showing different stuff under construction..trick is you have to bring each camera into focus which by changing the frequency.

Sure you could try and figure it out yourself but why bother? Here are the frequencies:

camera 1 frequency of 555 (99.1%)

camera 2 frequency 120 (99.5%)

camera 4 frequency 289 (100% )

Now Camera 3 is the money shot! It only comes up every so often and it’s a pic of the interior of the new Star Trek XI NCC-1701 interior!!!

It looks ALOT like a TNG interior to me…i wonder if they’ll decide to put in a holodeck too..

wordpress.jpgYou don’t know what you got till its gone..

Over the weekend my site (and a few others ) that are hosted here at WordPress.com were mysteriously removed from the global WordPress.com tagging setup (wordpress.com/tags/YOURTAGNAME).

Today (tuesday after a long weekend in the US) the Tags are back and boy are we thrilled.

WordPress Tags are a critical ingredient to the success of WordPress, this blog and many others. It gives us a place to see like minded posts (or at least subjects) in the area we blog about. It gives us traffic and in term we give it traffic. It’s a wonderful symbiotic relationship.

Sure there are Technorati Tags – BUT WordPress Tags are superior in many ways. For one they work just for the WordPress community (so it’s easy to comment on each others material). Unlike Technorati Tags WordPress Tags 99% of the time work – with Technorati after several years of blogging we still don’t show up.

So THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU WordPress.com staffers for fixing the issue whatever it was. ShowMeSciFi.com appreciates your efforts and worships the Tags you walk on.

Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles 1×3 January 21, 2008

Alrighty the pilot is out of the way so now we’re into the regular stuff and so far it’s not that great, though it did have some neat plot developments.

In the pilot Summer Glau (Cameron)’s Terminator was a believable teen – hey she fooled John Connor and he’s trained to locate Terminators. In this episode she was rigid, robotic and entirely unbelievable as a normal teen.

Oh and what was with that girl that sat next to John in science class? (before Cameron came in) ..she clearly knew John ..she’s gotta be a resistance fighter from the future or something.

The resistance fighters subplot is really a great idea and clearly they’ve been sent back from the future to hunt down skynet themselves. Who built Skynet is the big question in this show..unlike T2 and T3 there is a question in Sarah Connor Chronicles.

OHH and with all the hype behind this series FOX is already dropping the ball – an hour after the show FOX still didn’t have a listing for the episode up on the show’s website. Compare that with Stargate Atlantis for example where each week’s episode is listed the week before – to give the fans something to look forward to and a name for the episode. I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope FOX is planning on stranding us the way they stranded Firefly.

Star Trek XI : Shatner Out Because Kirk is Dead January 21, 2008

Among all the excitement of the new Star Trek XI movie there is a major controversy.

William ‘Bill’ Shatner a.ka. Captain James Tiberius Kirk has been SHAFTED by the producers of Star Trek XI and will not be making an appearance.

Leonard Nimoy (SPOCK) is in it, but apparently Shatner isn’t good enough for J.J. Abrams.

“I think they’re coming toward the end (of shooting, so) they’ve got another three weeks to hire me,” Shatner joked at the opening of the traveling exhibit Star Trek: The Tour in a recent interview with USAtoday. “No, I don’t think you’ll be seeing me, unfortunately. I don’t know the reason why.”

Apparently the reason why is because Kirk died in Star Trek : Generations.

WHAT A LAME EXCUSE. Spock died at the end of Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan – he came back. Why not Shatner’s Kirk?

No i think the reason is because Shatner is such a giant in the Star Trek world that his appearance in Star Trek XI would overshadow all the others in the recast classic roles.

Want Shatner’s Kirk back? You’re not alone. Go check out BringBackKirk.com for a group that has got the right idea. It’s time for Kirk to Return.  J.J. Abrams may think he’s some kind of hotshot director but without Shatner something will be missing from Star Trek XI.
