Zoe Saldana has been picked to be the new Uhura for the new Star Trek movie.

Saldana who has previously been in Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and The Terminal (with Tom Hanks) already knows a thing or two about Vulcans.

Uhura’s casting follows casting for Scotty (with a scotsman), Chekov (with a real Russian), Spock (with a guy that has pointy ears). The secret script has apparently been completed and Star Trek XI should be in theatres for X-mas 2008.

Now if they could only cast Kirk…

But without any futher do..here is the future Uhura showing us what she knows about vulcans. Live Long and Prosper Zoe Saldana!

Live for Star Trek? How about a Star Trek casket? September 17, 2007

We’ve got star trek dating and weddings. So why no Star Trek funerals?

Casket and Urn maker Eternal Image has licensed the right to use Star Trek images on its funeral products.

“These licensed-image Star Trek products offer true fans a unique expression of their commitment to the franchise. For many years fans have asked for these types of products – or made their own – and we believe the Star Trek audience will embrace the idea which will create a very strong demand,” Clint Mytych, CEO Eternal Image said in a statement.

The actual casket haven’t yet been produced though I suspect they’ll be much like the major league baseball ones they already have.

While the idea of a Star Trek casket is kinda neat and freaky at the same time – the only time you ever see caskets on Star Trek (the show) is when they’re being shot out into space.

How Much Is A Star Trek NCC-1701-B Playmates Ship Worth? September 16, 2007

How Much Is A Star Trek NCC-1701-B Playmates Ship Worth? The easy answer is..depends on what you’re willing to pay for it.

Though the NCC 1701B playmates ship (the one that Kirk got sucked into the Nexus from in Star Trek Generations) is extremely rare..this past weekend there was recently at least three (3) auctions for it on eBay. We here at ShowMeSciFi.com tracked them all to try and see what the ship was worth..

Here’s the breakdown..

The first ship – went for $22.66 after starting at $9.99 and solicited 3 bids from 3 bidders.

The second ship – was won for $31.00 – also started at $9.99 though this auction solicited 4 bidders and 9 bids.

The third ship was won for – $31.56 – started at $9.95 and was a very active auction – with 5 bidders and 16 bids.

From the pics and the descriptions both ships appear to have been equivalent – so I’d say the first auction winner got the better deal – though both winners should be very pleased as winning this ship for anything less than $65 or so in my book is a real steal.

Star Wars: Legacy #16 The Legacy of Obi-Wan? HA! September 16, 2007

After the MAGIC that was Star Wars Legacy #15, issue #16 is a most impressive followup.

Sure we know now who Darth Krayt really is, but this is where it get even more interesting as the motivation behinds his conversion to Sith becomes known and Cade Skywalker’s friends (and enemies) line up to try and save him.

Then there is Obi-Wan Kenobi.

When i first saw the cover of this issue and its title – Legacy of Obi-Wan – I thought that WOW maybe Obi-wan had kids or descendants or clones..but no

The legacy of obi-wan is something far simpler and relatively

non-interesting…somewhat of a let down actually (though that’s not the right word to use in connection with Legacy since this is the best Star Wars Expanded Universe tale of all time).

What Obi-wan did to Hett is no different than what was done to Hett’s dad by Ki-al Mundi in Outlander.

Of significantly more interest in this issue is the return of Cade’s MAMA who we haven’t seen in Legacy since issue #10 . Her joining up with the rest of Cade’ bounty hunter pals is a stroke of plot genius.

Will Cade fully turn to the dark side? It certainly looks that way…but somehow I suspect that his mama, friends and the Jedi will turn him back from the path of the dark side.

Highlander The Source – Who wants this series to live forever? September 15, 2007

The first Highlander movie is an epic cult classic.

Ever since there have been far too many attempts to re-create that magic on the big screen and the small…the latest attempt is on SciFi tonight called Highlander the Source.

After X movies and shows, we’re finally going to figure out how the immortals became immortal.

Trailer is pretty slick..and the show…well..it follow the standard Highlander model..(namely weak’ish ploting, mediocre acting, excellent action and sound and excellent pacing to an ultimate finale where someone loses their head and a Quickening occurs).

My main problem with this show is – what the frak is considered canon for Highlander? I had thought Highlander : Endgame was it…but now? i don’t know.

Isn’t Christopher Lambert supposed tobe the REAL DEAL Highlander?! Sure Adrian Paul is good but??

Here’s the trailer if you haven’t seen it yet…

Though there isn’t any new Battlestar Galactica on the tube , there is some great stuff at the comic book store.

I just finished reading Battlestar Galactica Season Zero issue #1 and…WOW great frakking stuff. Solid plot and character stuff..art isn’t fantastic but it’s not bad either.

The 6-issue Season Zero series follows Commander Adama and crew as they take on their first mission on board the Galactica. Though this is issue #1 its not actually the first issue in this series.

As reviewed here on ShowMeSciFi.com there was an issue zero for season zero – it was arguably the most widely read/printed/distributed Battlestar Galactica comic book of all time.

vestassmall.jpg Wind Power has been hailed as the ecological saviour for the planet…now while many may think it’s the Wind that actually powers the wind turbines, we here at ShowMeSciFi.com know better.

On a recent trip through Copenhagen International Airport (CPH) we came across a wind power display from turbine vendor Vestas.

There was something a bit odd about it though and on a closer examination it become more obvious.

Check out the pic below of the (lego) worker in the model that runs the Turbine..

After a year and a half of suffering with this title, it’s finally coming together. From a plot point of view Dark Horse’s Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic issue #19 is easily the best issue this year pulling together all the major characters of the series.
We’ve got Mandalaorians
We’ve got the Republic Fleet
We’ve got Jedi (good and bad)
We’ve got the Arcanians (offshoots and purebloods)
Zayne Carrick is coming face to face (or back to back) with his Jedi tormentor

And its’ all coming together..the plot lines and the characters.

The only thing missing is the Sith – then again – Lord Adasca, head of the massive corporation Adascorp – might well be a Sith considering the way he’s manipulated the universe.

The weak link in this issue is the art. It is painfully pathetic at points and very amateurish. As I’ve complained before Zayne Carrick our main ‘hero’ in this series gets yet another treatment – so he look different again. If you compare how Zayne is drawn across say 5 issues you’ll see what looks like 5 different characters.

Still KOTOR #19 is a solid issue continuing from the solid issue #18. It’s a good trend and we can only hope that Dark Horse’s editors wizen up and put some real artists to work on this book.

Well we finally know the name of the next Indiana Jones pic – The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

No word yet on the plot – but here’s the ShowMeSciFi.com totally unofficial hope/guess :
The Crystal Skull is really an advanced piece of technology from another off planet society which enables out of body communications with the offworlders.
..yeaaah I know wishfull thinking…it’s probably some other non-historical nonsense…(not the that the holy grail is nonsense that was cool, oh and the ark of the covenant was cool too…)

There have been alot of great Family Guy Star Wars ‘spoof’ moments over the course of this great Fox show.

The upcoming season premiere looks like it could top them all with a full hour long Star Wars inspired spoof.

After the Griffin’s lose power, Peter entertains the family with the greatest story ever told…the story of Star Wars! After Princess Leia (Lois) comes under siege by Darth Vader (Stewie) and his evil Storm Troopers, C-3PO (Quagmire) and R2-D2 (Cleveland) escape to find the only person who can help the Rebel Alliance. On their quest thorough the desert planet of Tatooine, C-3PO and R-2D2 find extra help in Obi-Wan Kenobi (Herbert), Luke Skywalker (Chris), Han Solo (Peter) and Chewbacca (Brian) and head back to battle the Death Star in an epic intergalactic fight to the death in the “Blue Harvest” episode of FAMILY GUY on Sunday, Sept. 23 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT.)

Here’s the preview that aired some time ago (thnx to jedi insider)

Sit tight nuggets! SciFi intends to frak with you.

Though we all know now that that the next season is the last for Battlestar Galactica – apparently the season may well be split over the course of not one but two calendar years (2008 and 2009).

This is what i would call adding insult to injury.

Ok so the show is ending – that’s both good and bad. True diehard fans will watch no matter what. But the casual fan isn’t going to bother. The current 10 month gap between the last season and the next is bad enough..but SciFi channel that FAN HATING BASTION of non-creativity is going to do it to us again.

But what can we do? Petition the network? Boycott them?

i DON’T know….i guess as long as SciFi Network’s parent NBC Universal is making money they don’t really care.

I suppose at the dawn of the Aviation age there were those that would have argued that thousands of airports around the world would one day exist with millions of travellers.

It would only be logical to assume that the same would one day be true for space travel as well. However considering how slowly manned space travel has progressed in the last 30 years – i think that lots of people have their doubts.

The people behind Spaceport America aren’t among them.

When the 100,000 square-foot (9,290 square-meter) facility is completed — the centerpiece of the world’s first, purpose-built, commercial spaceport — the structures will serve as the primary operating base for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic suborbital spaceliner, and also as the headquarters for the New Mexico Spaceport Authority.

Sandworms of Dune – Review September 5, 2007

sandworms.jpgI finally finished Sandworms of Dune..it’s been out for nearly a month at this point).

Like its predecesor – Hunters of Dune – this is a very well written book. Unlike Hunters of Dune which ended with the realization that after 15,000 years the machines were back – i wasn’t as blown over with the final outcome. In fact it was a bit of a let down.

Sure the final ultimate Kwizatch Haderach is revealed – woohoo – and ultimately – the machines are confronted and the ultimate resolution is acheived.

But the path to reaching those ultimate conclusions was too long, and convoluted. The fact that so little of the Universe outside of the New Sisterhood and the no-ship is discussed or revealed is terribly disappointing.

Then again – the final resolution does bring back many of the great heroes that have spanned the Dune universe. But not all.

At no point is the great Vorian Atreides discussed. He was the one that served Omnius/Erasmus after all and it would have been great to have him return as well.

At points the book is thoroughly engaging and it is a MUST READ for all fans of Dune. Sandworms is not however the best (nor the worst) of the Dune books. It could have been as brilliant as the Dune: The Battle of Corrin (which was supposed to have been the end of the thinking machines) but somehow it stutters a bit.

Supposedly this is the last – chronologically speaking – book in the Dune series. Though it will not be the last in the Dune series in terms of publication.

starwarsgalaxystorefront.jpgI recently found myself in Sweden (south Sweden’s Malmo to be exact) and of course had to get my SciFi fix.

This store – Galaxy Galleri Trend was one of the only things i found..the Star Wars name on the sign is what caught my eye.

Basically alot of Power of The Force ships, tonnes of figures – and ridiculously overpriced stuff and very unfriendly staff.

It’s a small store and I probably would have bought something (just because) but hey when you’re the only person in the store and the store owner won’t even look at you…well…what ya gonna do. Also their collection of Star Wars comics ends around 2002 so no Legacy!

CBS is going all out with its high quality remastered version of Star Trek season one. We’ve already seen the awesome special effects that have been layered in – but what the DVD promises is oohhh so much more.

Inline commentary, scene by scene comparisons and a degree of interactivity that i don’t think i’ve ever seen on any SciFi DVD – EVER.

Star Trek remastered is set to come out in November and it looks like
Amazon is already doing pre-orders at 30 percent of MSRP. Check it out for yourself . The only issue is that its HD-DVD (which adds to the cost) though its a dual format release meaning it will run on regular DVD players as well.

Star Trek.com just put out an 8 minute teaser trailer that lays it all out – in all of its glory.

If only melange flowed freely and Maud’ib had never wandered into the desert of Arakis..

Apparently a new version of Dune may well be on  the way if rumors are to be believed.

Personally I’ve enjoyed both the David Lynch and the SCIFI channel versions…i’m not terribly interested in yet another version of the first Dune book…but maybe we could have..The Butlerian Jihad? that would be awesome.

First Scotty played by a Scotsman

Now Chekov being played by a Russian. I guess J.J.Abrams and his casting staff on Star Trek XI are aiming for real ethnic authenticity.

Anton Yelchin – a relative unknown in North America has been officially cast as Chekov…
I wonder if he’ll be able to find the ..’nucleal wessel…”

There are also active rumors circulating today on Uhura…nothing official yet though.

And the big question – who will be Kirk still remains.

Flash Gordon is filmed in British Columbia thanks in part to grants from the Government of Canada.

Yet if you live in Canada – it’s not all that easy to find Flash Gordon on the tube (legally that is). Canada’s Space Network (spacecast.com) which is the Canadian home to Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Atlantis among other first run SciFi shows IS NOT running Flash Gordon.

There is no official word on why that is.

Then again considering how bad Flash Gordon is – Canadians aren’t missing all that much are they?

Holy Jawa do these books come out fast! Inferno is officially available today (though i don’t have a copy in my hands just yet).

As opposed to Sacrifice which we all knew would be the story in which Jacen Solo takes his Sith name – Inferno has no such penultimate highlight…though there is alot of ground to cover and it promises to be a riveting tale spun by Troy Denning

On a personal level I’m really going to take my time reading this one enjoying every page of what has become one of the best (if not THE BEST) Star Wars Expanded Universe book series ever.

oh and hey BRING BACK MARA JADE! (sign the petition!)
