Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi : Into the Void – REVIEW – Good Fun/Suck A$$ ending September 3, 2013

We’ve been touch/go fans of the Dawn of the Jedi series since it first debuted as a Dark Horse comic book series.

Into the Void is no comic.

The depth of character and setting development here is extra-ordinary and this is a brilliantly craft tale that doesn’t fit the typical Star Wars novel mold. Yes there are concurrent sets of plots as always, but we get the present and then a past flashback that helps to inform what is going on in the present. It’s a good fit.

What isn’t just a good fit is how this sunovabeeeatch ends. AFter engaging us page after page after page, the ending of this book leaves a lot to be desired. The conclusion is no conclusion and is just a – ok he’s dead move along ending.

This is a story about a brother and a sister, one embracing the force one that rejects it – it’s good fun until the final chapter, which leaves a bitter aftertaste.

Princess Polly and the World’s Smallest Ninja – (kinda/sorta) SciFi Fun for the whole family August 25, 2013

princess-pollyWe just came back from seeing a truly delightful Family Matinee of :

Princess Polly and the World’s Smallest Ninja

at the World Famous Second City in Toronto,.  No we weren’t expecting any SciFi here (maybe some fantasy but..) This was one amazing show.

The Princess has her own droid (R3) which basically a standard Star Wars R2-D2 droid with wings that the cast has hanging on the end of a long pole that they just wave around…trust us, it’s cool.

the princess also ‘talks’ droid as does the Ninja Yuo Ming (smallest ninja and yeah a pun on basketball giant Yuo Ming).

Through out this hour long romp, we get a family friendly story, with lots of scifi anecdotes, making this one of the best Sunday afternoon shows we have ever seen.

Sadly this show only has one more performance left coming up this Thursday.  So if you’re in the Toronto area, run don’t walk and get over there!

Buck Rogers #1

We’ve always been big Buck Rogers fans here..

We loved the 80’s Gil Gerrard Buck too..

and the recent Dynamite Buck Rogers series – was interesting – artistically but the stories were downright stoopid.

Now along comes Hermes Press, a comic book publisher we’ve never heard off before and they have wowed us with something that is authentic, something that is real and is entertaining.

Yeaah we like and Yeaaah we’ll be looking to buy the second issue of this series too.

Elysium is Good Fun – But It’s No District 9 August 20, 2013

Elysium

Yes we really liked District 9 – (who didn’t right?)

So we had some really high hopes for Elysium. As it turns out Elysium is a good/not great film.

The basic story lacks the ‘twist’ that District 9 has, but it is a solid complete story, with a beginning, middle and a (somewhat cheesy) ending.

Special effects are solid as is the acting.

Our fav character has got to be Kruger – the crazy South African – seriously the dude has a whole blown into head, but apparently his brain is still there, so his whole skull can  be reconstructed – how crazy cool is that?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again.

Dennis Wheatly is the finest artist in Star Wars comicdom today.

He’s been associated with Dark Times since the beginning (this is what the 7th number one issue in this series?) and each time we’re blown away.

Other Dark Horse artists are good, but Wheatly is the best.

Beyond that Randy Stradley as the author? You gotta be kidding me it’s the ultimate super-powered duo team up.

This story is riveting – Jennir is still struggling to come to terms with reality and his new life/love while Bomo and the crew are moving forward now aiming at striking back at Vader.

The hunted become the hunters.

How cool is that?

Oh and does anyone want to bet that Ember won’t make it out of this series alive?

Star Wars #7 – This is GOOD. VERY GOOD. July 22, 2013

The new Dark Horse ‘Star Wars’ series is awesome.

It was awesome for it’s first six issues an the seventh just proves this title has legs…

We get a different view of Vader…one who plots his own path from the Emperor (not all that unlike Force Unleashed come to think of it…). One who chooses his own person to lead the construction of the Death Star.

We don’t quite yet understand what role Birra Seah is set to play in this whole opera..but she’s an interesting Vader lackey isn’t she?

Also totally amazing to see Luke return to Tatooine to visit the Skywalker homestead…in a return home that is very different then when his father returned….

No it’s not quite the director’s cut – but it’s still quite fun.

1A4 Studio has put together a ‘speedrun’ lineart version of Blade Runner that is just amazing fun to watch.

oh and if you haven’t seen this one before – this is the same group that did an amazing 60 second version of Star Wars too:

ST13-PosterWe weren’t expecting much from Star Trek Into Darkness..

No we didn’t like J J Abrams first Star Trek movie…but Into Darkness..

Not too shabby.

First off..

KLINGONS!!

Yes we get a new era of Klingons in this pic (include super-cool new headgear).

We get Klingon speaking Uhura and Klingons speaking Klingon on Kronos itself.

No classic era Birds of Prey, but a sleek new type of scout ship that looks really cool.

OK next up.

KHAN.

No we didn’t expect to see him either, John Harrison is Khan – who knew? No this isn’t a Ricardo Montoblan Khan, but still a devious Mofo and an excellent villain.

The line by line recitation in this movie from Star Trek II Wrath of Khan – inverted with Kirk getting irradiated and Spock getting the call from Scotty that he needs to come down to Engineering right away…WAS SHEER BRILLIANCE.

Spock screaming out Khan!!! was neat, though a bit mis-placed. In Wrath of Khan, Kirk yells out Khan when he is trapped on the planet beneath Regulla One.

TRIBLES.

Another amazeballs twist, J J went all out to give classic fans things to love. Tribles saved by Khan blood save Kirk.

Overall a fun movie, not a pure classic like Wrath of Khan was/is but vastly better than the first J J Abrams Trek and absolutely an entertaining move that we are likely to see more than once.

Remember Backaroo Banzai? yeah that one..with Peter Weller.

At the end of the credits we were promised a Sequel and now nearly 30 years later the director of the original flick is still giving us hope.

In an interview with moviefone director W.D. Richter
I believe MGM owns the theatrical rights. The other big insanity for ‘Buckaroo’ is that the paper trail for the rights is almost impossible to follow. Warner Bros. wants to do an adult animated version of ‘Buckaroo.’ PolyGram sold it to MGM as a big bundle — all these films move around. And then, finally, you’re sitting at a studio that you found out purchased part of someone’s library and they are reluctant to do anything with the title because they don’t know for a fact that David Begleman, who was a notorious double dealer, might not have sold the international rights in perpetuity to some guy in Bangkok.

WTF is this dickwad doing managing the Star Trek movies? srsly? You hired this J J Abrams guy?

In an interview in Playboy (yes that playboy), Abrams admits how little he knows about Trek.

Well, I haven’t seen every episode of every version of every Star Trek series, but I’m sure there are many more places to go. What’s great about doing another origin story is that it’s all about anticipating the Star Trek world we know is to come. You can play with who Spock and Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise were before they were Spock and Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise. It’s a kind of tease.

The morons that run Comedy Central are killing Futurama – but hey after the morons at Fox first killed the series.. we’re thankfull we got another few good years.

and hey this isn’t necessarily the end – though there is a spoiler out there that claims that the Comedy Central finale of Futurama will be awesome..

SPOILER ALERT:

..the series finale, which features a wedding between Fry and Leela, is “a tasteful, emotional gorefest,” he raves. “There’s a lot of death but there’s also a lot of time travel, so that makes for an interesting combination.” Adds Groening: “It’s a really satisfying ending. It’s an epic ending. If indeed it’s the ending.”

The whole point of Open Source software is that code is free and open and there is no lockin. It also means that if there is a dead project or company, it doesn’t mean that a given application is dead.

This week Disney closed down LucasArts – meaning all LucasArts games are essentially dead… well not all of them The Force is with Open Source and Jedi Knight.

The prime dev studio behind Jedi Academy and Jedi Outcast has open sourced the source code behind those two projects under the open source GPLv2 license.

That’s right those two epic games are now GPLv2 meaning ANYONE can look at the code and build their own…kinda/sorta.

While the code is open source, the images and sound (big parts of that game) are not. So as a learning tool on how to build a Jedi Knight game this is invaluable stuff..and who knows maybe it will lead to Jedi Resurrection on Linux on day too.

The source code for Jedi outcast is available here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/jedioutcast/ and http://sourceforge.net/projects/jediacademy/

Screen Shot 2013-04-03 at 8.35.13 PM Disney really doesn’t like parts of the Star Wars Universe.

First they destroyed the Clone Wars, ending the series before its time.

Now Disney is closing down LucasArts. That’s right the main production house behind some of the best games ever made is being shutdown by the house the mouse built.

“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”

Iain Banks is Dying April 3, 2013

terrible news broke today…

Iain Banks disclosed that he has terminal cancer.

We’ve been huge fans of Banks here on ShowMeSciFi ever since we first read Consider Phelbas, we’ve inhaled everything he’s written since then.

Banks’ approach to SciFi is unique, his voice authentic and his stories are beyond compare. Our thoughts and best wishes go to out to this titan of SciFi during his final days.

Here’s a brief excerpt from Banks’ statement

I first thought something might be wrong when I developed a sore back in late January, but put this down to the fact I’d started writing at the beginning of the month and so was crouched over a keyboard all day. When it hadn’t gone away by mid-February, I went to my GP, who spotted that I had jaundice. Blood tests, an ultrasound scan and then a CT scan revealed the full extent of the grisly truth by the start of March.

I have cancer. It started in my gall bladder, has infected both lobes of my liver and probably also my pancreas and some lymph nodes, plus one tumour is massed around a group of major blood vessels in the same volume, effectively ruling out any chance of surgery to remove the tumours either in the short or long term.

J J Abrams in his infinite wisdom DID NOT include William Shatner in his reboot of Star Trek – but that’s not stopping the makers of the new Star Trek video from including Shatner in a new promo.

Shattner parodies himself in this clip (and for good measure we’ve put the classic 1967 clip of his first encounter with the gorn too!)

the new game is set for official release on April 26th 2013

and the classic episode bit that is being parodied:

Here at ShowMeSciFi.com, we’ve been Matt Smith fans from Day one and his first episode as a Doctor Who (Eleventh Hour)

He’s funnier than David Tennant.

He’s tough.

He’s cerebral.

He’s got real charisma.

oh and he’ll also be the Doctor deep into 2014 too.

Screen Shot 2013-04-01 at 10.42.29 PM What happens when an otherwise normal town is cut off from the rest of civilization by an unknown dome?

That’s what Stephen King’s book Under the Dome: A Novel
released in 2010 is all about

Now that book is being translated into a 13 week mini-series for CBS set to debut in June.

Looks interesting but seriously 13 weeks? I don’t think so. this isn’t Dark Tower it’s just one novel and it’s not worth 13 weeks…

hobbit-desolationofsmaugThe hype cycle for part 2 of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy is now gearing up.

The new film has the title, “The Desolation of Smaug”

As part of the PR push, Jackson has pushed out a video talking about the film, which has a whole lot of amazing insights. One of the best segments for us was a video question from Stephen Colbert who asked if there would be proper differentiation to show the different groups of Elves. Jackson’s answer — Yes.

Jackson also revealed that he ‘walked out of Colbert’s studio’ with a mug that might not have been his..
