At long last Star Wars has returned to Marvel as we knew it would when Disney bought Dark Horse.
Here at ShowMeSciFi, We’re not particularly thrilled by the move, after all the years we diligently collected Dark Horse and learned its canon. Now that’s all gone.
Instead we have this sh*t.
Characters that don’t quite look right (yet), and simple Han Solo tale where somehow he isn’t shot onsite when landing on an Imperial outpost on a Correlian moon, and Leia still hasn’t (officially) fallen in love with him/ maried him and Jacen, Jania and Anakin etc etc.
So we’re at step 1.

Let’s hope step 2 pick up that pace, improves the artwork and the story too, otherwise Marvel second kick at the Star Wars Universe, won’t be any more successful than the first time around

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again.

Dennis Wheatly is the finest artist in Star Wars comicdom today.

He’s been associated with Dark Times since the beginning (this is what the 7th number one issue in this series?) and each time we’re blown away.

Other Dark Horse artists are good, but Wheatly is the best.

Beyond that Randy Stradley as the author? You gotta be kidding me it’s the ultimate super-powered duo team up.

This story is riveting – Jennir is still struggling to come to terms with reality and his new life/love while Bomo and the crew are moving forward now aiming at striking back at Vader.

The hunted become the hunters.

How cool is that?

Oh and does anyone want to bet that Ember won’t make it out of this series alive?

Star Wars #7 – This is GOOD. VERY GOOD. July 22, 2013

The new Dark Horse ‘Star Wars’ series is awesome.

It was awesome for it’s first six issues an the seventh just proves this title has legs…

We get a different view of Vader…one who plots his own path from the Emperor (not all that unlike Force Unleashed come to think of it…). One who chooses his own person to lead the construction of the Death Star.

We don’t quite yet understand what role Birra Seah is set to play in this whole opera..but she’s an interesting Vader lackey isn’t she?

Also totally amazing to see Luke return to Tatooine to visit the Skywalker homestead…in a return home that is very different then when his father returned….

Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi is a series with a whole lot of promise..but has been slow moving.

Xesh is an awesome character though and the cover image – really is the highlight of this issue – Xesh – the ‘bad guy’ fighting a pure blood Sith (aka the J’eedai good guy).

Still interesting for us to see light sabers as being a novel/new idea and not common place.

Agent of the Empire has been one of our favorite new Star Wars comic storylines ever since the first issue.

Here we get Jahan Cross

-the Agent of the Empire

and his Dad

oh and Boba Fett

and Serenno (Count Dooku!)

what more could you ask for?

Well the finale of this story didn’t quite make sense – though the overall plot was great fun.

How Cross was able to double-cross Boba Fett and get him to kill what should have been the new count of serenno didn’t quite make sense to us. The story just kinda wheezed out in the end in a climax that wasn’t terribly exciting.

Dark Times has always been a ‘dark’ comic.

how could we ever forget that very first story arc back in 2007 – that was so…’unappetizing’

Fire Carrier continues that tradition –

Refugees ferried to a safe location…

only to…. be …

well…

..it’s not pretty.

Dark Times..

indeed…

Dark Horse Star Wars #3 – one word review – AWESOME March 26, 2013

The new Star Wars series – (just Star Wars) has been great to read and enjoy since the first issue. The third issue is no exception to that trend.

This is Classic era at its finest – in that time just after Episode IV (A New Hope) when we didn’t know that Leia was Luke’s sister yet.

In this issue we get a little ‘distraction’  or is it jealousy? with a new Rebel pilot that is getting quite friendly with Luke.

Also cool to see Han in his early days as a Rebel agent – on Coruscant no less.

Enjoyable engaging story – thoughtful and flowing art throughout  – an overall joy to read.

Star Wars Legacy Volume 2 Issue #1 – is Terrible – Why did you Screw up Legacy Dark Horse??? Why???! March 26, 2013

Star Wars Legacy is our favorite Star Wars storyline of the expanded universe. In a real sense, it’s the title that got us back into comics after a 20 year absence.

That was for the first Star Wars Legacy – the one about Cade Skywalker. The one written by the awesome John Ostrander with art by incomparable Jane Duursema.

The new Legacy is an insult to that first series.

Sure it takes place in the same time period – actually just after the Legacy War series ended. But this is not the same Legacy.

For one, the artwork is terrible.

Yeaah i know the cover is sweet — the interior art however is the worst we’ve seen in a Dark Horse title in years.

The story is slow and our new Solo heroine – isn’t the same kind of engaging character like Cade was – in fact she’s boring (so far).

In contrast that first Legacy series so totally blew our socks off – so perhaps we just have extremely high expectations – but that’s Dark Horse’s fault. They created the greatest Star Wars comic of all time with the first Star Wars Legacy – the new Legacy so far doesn’t live up to that legacy.

Star Wars Purge: Tyrant's Fist #1 Star Wars Purge: Tyrant’s Fist #1 Looks like a lot of fun. It’s  a series that since that beginning has been about Darth Vader being..

BAD.

Yeaah it’s not about redemption, It’s about Purging Jedi scum from the new Imperial Order.

The first Star Wars Purge came out two and half years ago as a one shot issue and it was awesome – because Vader failed.

It was a ‘human’ failing for a dude that at this point is more evil than anything else.

While the cover art and the story for this new series looks cool, the interior pages remind us of the crap that we used to see from Dark Horse and not the more modern glorious artwork that we crave.

Star Wars Agent of the Empire Hard Targets #2

Star Wars Agent of the Empire Hard Targets #2

We really enjoyed the first Agent of the Empire series – Iron Eclipse. What was not to like?

A new super agent that has awesome skills like a James Bond, he’s ‘friends’ with Han Solo and he is loyal to the Empire kinda/sorta…

Now Jahan Cross is back and this time he starts off by killing the Count of Serreno (yeaah the same place Count Dooku is from). Then he goes to help those poor SOBS find a new count…great Imperial duplicity.

AND oh yeah.

We meet Jahan’s dad too – who apparently is a legitimate good guy.

So far we’re two issues into this story and it has been one of the most enjoyable Star Wars titles we’ve read all year.

Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi

Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi

Oh man are we excited to this series come back!

Dark Horse now has this FRAKKED idea that every series should be a mini-series of 5 or 6 issues after which they take a few months off.

So instead of month after month of Dawn of the Jedi goodness..we’ve had to wait…

We finished the first five issues of Dawn of the Jedi back in September. At the end of that story arc – Xesh – the ‘Force Hound’ was send to Bogan with other miscreants to re-learn the ways of the force.

Now we’re finally going to see what this Bogan is all about and it sure looks/sounds impressive to us.

Banished to the dark moon Bogan, the Force Hound Xesh has been living in contemplation; the memory of who he was before his ship crashed on Tython still escapes him. A rival from his past is on his trail, and the Je’daii are doing all they can to discover his origin. And now, Xesh is about to meet someone who will change his life forever, a former great Je’daii . . . the prisoner of Bogan!

Xesh!!

ok so Maul is back – he’s out with his brother and he’s looking to get revenge…

simple plot?

Not Quite.

You see the dude that wanted Maul dead isn’t so nice, even though the Jedi support him.

So in one of the greatest twists we have seen in a Star Wars comic in some time….

DARTH MAUL IS NOW ON THE RIGHT SIDE.

Maul is now going to help the displaced inhabitants of a planet against their Jedi backed overseers.

Nice twist.

Well executed plot, stunning graphics and an overall vibe made this a comic that we impossible for us to put down before reading cover to cover…

twice!!

Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi Force Storm – Is Xesh Really Evil? Great series… September 25, 2012

Ok we’ve finally finished ready the first five issues of the next great Star Wars story – Dawn of the Jedi.

The first five issues make up the ‘Force Storm’ story arc and yeah it’s mostly about the ‘storm’ that happens on Typhon when the Force Hound Xesh lands.

Xesh is an interesting character and to be honest, he’s the only one that really resonated with us through the first five issues. There are just too many characters in this series to keep track off, and hey Xesh is central and he’s the bad guy (think Vader).

At the end of issue five, he’s taken to Bodan – some kind of place on Typhon where bad guys can mediate on the light sight of the force…

Since in this era of the Jeedai (no typo – – no Jedi yet!) there are no Sith yet either…well not unless you count the Jeedai journeyman that is a pureblood sith but not Sith in the dark side of the force sense…

Anyways good fun, interesting read as a series. NO this doesn’t compare to John Ostrander last mega masterpiece – Star Wars Legacy (not even close), but it’s still an enjoyable plot line and one that we’re looking forward to reading about for at least another 45(?) issues.

Yeaah we know we’re a little behind on our comic review (but we’re catching up!!).

Knight Errant: Escape #4 is good solid fun.

Odion – the Sith we all love to hate is at his worst, making ppl kill each other, taunting Kerra and oh yeah – now wearing an ancient sith weapon of great power on his head too.

We also finally see more of Kerra’s parents – in a holorecording…

It’s clear that they no longer live…but there is another…

a brother?

a sister?

we’ll likely find out in the in the final issue coming up.

we’ll also see if Kerra finds her way out of the Odionate and what Damian will do to her…if he catches up to her that is..!

The final issue of Ghost Prison was a really great read. We knew that Vader would return to Coruscant with the Emperor and sure we knew that Gentis would get his arse kicked. We just didn’t know how.
Amazing twist with the Vader teaming up with Moff Tarkin (and hey isn’t he a Vader rivaL too?)

Great story overall – was fun to see how Vader dealt with the Ghost Prisoner in the end…perhaps a bit brutal and merciless but hey ..that’s Vader!!

Only one title that we’re really looking forward to this week.

Star Wars Ghost Prison #5 – This series is almost done…we’ve now got the ‘ghosts’ from Anakin’s past imprisonment on Vader’s side, the Emperor is on the mend..all that remains if for Vader and the Empire loyalist to retake Coruscant…

So far this has been an interesting series. We see Vader on the run, we get a bit of Anakin back story..and we see another side to the young days of the Empire…

an empire that sees the Emperor for what he is and aims to replace him…

Star Wars Knight Errant: Escape issue #4 is out..

this series is now near the end..we know that Kara has been discovered, but will she find her family….we’ll see…

The other big title this week for us is another John Jackson Miller one..(dude is busy..)

Star Wars Lost Tribe of the Sith : Sprial #2 is out this week too.

Having set sail on a prisoner vessel to uncharted territories, a rebel and a stowaway princess find themselves in a losing battle with their crewmates against a society of strange self-proclaimed exiles. When they are taken in by the exiles, new opportunities for power within the civilization pique their interest. The rebel recklessly takes the first opening to go after a guarded weapon he believes could upend the entire tribe of Sith!

Sounds like good fun to us…

After that first issue we *almost* thought that Boba rly did get toasted.
He is after a clone, and hey lots of his brothers are around.

Now in this issue we get the real story – what happened and how his nice Mando’a helmet had a blaster bolt through it.

No surprise that Boba is going to use his half-brother to help him out, but what was a great surprise was seeing Sintas Vel.

that’s right – Sintas Vel, the woman that Boba Fett (in the books) has a child with. We can’t recall seeing sintas so beautifully drawn – errr painted as she has been in this issue.

Now the real hunt is one as we’ll find out how Boba can track down his own killers. No we don’t really care why they wanted to kill Boba, he is after all a bounty hunter so no doubt he has a lot of marks on his head.

The relationship between Boba and Connor Freeman (his half-brother) is interesting though. As it should be right? That’s what — Blood Ties – is all about.

We all know Darth Vader to be a menace. But what we get in this new series is something a big …different.

This first issue is pure genius.

We get our young Imperial Officer just graduating as the core character, we see the Empire through his eyes .

And we see Vader through his eyes — and it’s an awesome sight. In the midst of Chaos it is Vader that restores order. In the midst of rebellion it is vader that stands up to put his lightsaber through those that would oppose him.

This is the Dark Lord of the Sith as he should be – as an instrument of the Empire.

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic WAR #5. Zayne Goes Home June 4, 2012

The whole Knights of the Old Republic: War series was interesting for a few reasons.

It was neat to see Jedi aligned with the Mandalorians and it was great to see Zayne Carrick not being the ‘bad guy’.

We got to see a different side of Zayne in this series — Zayne the hero and it was a side that we sure enjoyed.

This final issue was easily the best in this mini-arc as the story came together. Jedi can’t be Mando’a after and

Zayne proved that you

CAN GO HOME AGAIN.

Finally.

Isn’t that what he was just trying to do in the very first issue of this series? go home see his family and his girlfriend?
