Good news for Warhammer 40,000 fans. A new movie is coming.

Yeaah it’s just a CGI based direct to DVD deal, but hey nothing wrong with that is there?

“Over the years, we have been approached again and again by all sorts of producers and film companies wanting to take our intellectual property to the screen. We have always believed that, in the right hands, the stories, themes and characters from the Warhammer 40,000 universe would lend themselves perfectly to the movie genre,”Erik Mogensen, Licensing and Acquired Rights Manager for Games Workshop, said in a statement. “We’re working closely with the talented team at Codex Pictures, who have an excellent understanding of the Warhammer 40,000 intellectual property and an inspired vision for the movie. We can’t wait to see our universe come to life on-screen.”

If they came make a full length of the quality that Warhammer 40 K game trailers have..we might have one heck of a movie.

Two-burn Maneuver Will Get Us to Mars Twice as Fast September 30, 2009

Interesting article on Wired today about an old SciFi idea that is new to Nasa.

The idea dates to 1929 and is called the two-burn maneuver. It basically relies on the premise that a faster moving object has more energy than a slower moving object.

So, if I was  in a spaceship at a space station i near the moon, I’d first have to rocked back towards the Earth. Then I’d point the ship toward mars and get a gravity assist and punch the rockets again.

Gravity assist is a common NASA technique but combining it with additional thrust is something that isn’t common.

Chad Vader S2 Ep8: Bandito Beatdown

is a return to form for Chad Vader.

This is meaningless crazy nonsense at its best.
The marshmellow bandito is so stoooopid it’s funny. And who doesn’t want to see vader fight the pillsbury dough boy?

The big setup in this episode is that Randy the night shift manager is going to kill someone because his doll – baby cookie – is going to ask him too.

I wonder who it will be…

V will only have 4 episodes in 2009. ABC Fraks over SciFi fans, again September 29, 2009

ABC sure knows how to kill a good SciFi show before it even starts.

A report in Variety today has confirmed that ABC will only air four (4) episodes of V this year.

That means the show will start – on November 3rd – and then effectively die.

The show is supposed to start up again in March, but what the frak is the point?

Four episodes and then cut us off? WTF is ABC’s problem?

Yes i know the Olympics are in early 2010, but that doesn’t mean V shouldn’t be on. Why couldn’t there be more episodes this year?

To put on a show, only air 4 episode then give your audience ‘the finger’ is what ABC is doing. They are tell us, the Science Fiction loving public, that they don’t care, they’re just filling in time slots.

Star Wars Fate of the Jedi : Omen REVIEW – In One Word, the best yet! September 27, 2009

omen The first Fate of the Jedi book : Outcast – was a decent but not great book.

Omen on the other hand is a GREAT book. Both a great Star Wars book and a fine SciFi book too.

The most memorable bit of this book for me are the backstory elements from the Sith of Kesh. These are Sith that have been cut off from the rest of galaxy for millenia and are now venturing back out.

FINALLY REAL SITH.

No more of this – rule of 2  – crap. Now we’ve got thousands of Sith ready to go on the rampage and that’s cool.

The Ang-ti the new race of force users are also cool. Why does it always have to be light or dark side of the force anyways?

The pacing of this book is brilliant with nice ‘bite-sized’ scenes that flow well without any extra/useless narrative.

The other interesting character aspect is how the media is brought into this. I don’t recall the media – as in journalists – ever really playing a key role in any star wars book before. It’s an interesting angle for sure.

Why are all the Jedi going nuts? I don’t know. No doubt the publishers are going to continue to stretch that part of the storyline out and squeeze it for every dollar they can.

Yes, this book is a bit short and yes as a hardcover the price if waay to high. We couldn’t afford to buy this book – that’s why the review is so late – but thankfully our local library finally got it in.

Dollhouse Season 2 Vows : What Happened to Alpha? September 25, 2009

dollhouseWTF? Did we miss something?

The first episode of season two doesn’t follow from the last episode of season one.

At the end of the last season we had Alpha on the run and Ballard had just come in. Now?

Is this all some conspiracy to get us to buy season one on DVD?

THAT SUX.

And how could Echo get married to Jamie Bamber (Apollo – and oh he was great wasn’t he?) so fast? She wasn’t a doll for him – so was she a doll for ballard for months? years? to get the bad guy to marry her?

Yes it’s cool to have Ballard on the inside.

Yes it’s weird that Whiskey is a nutcase and has this love/hate thing with Topher.

No it’s not cool that we don’t know what happened to Alpha unless to line Joss Whedon’s pockets with more money. It’s a frakkin recession out there man.

but hey if you want to just buy the missing 13th episode from Dollhouse Season 1 – Amazon has it for $1.99 Epitaph One

fringe.2The second episode of Fringe Season 2 was another fine episode.

Sure we had another mutant thing – and yes there are too many mutants in Fringe overall – but still it was interesting.

The Faux Francis character is neat too, still getting instruction via the mirror and now instead of trying to kill Olivia he is befriending her.

What was so important that William Bell told Olivia in the parallel universe?

And whatever happened to discussions about The Pattern? In the beginning of the show that was the whole mystery. We’ve not heard much about it in a while..maybe Bell and the Pattern are related.

flashforward

Flash Forward ‘s debut episode on ABC was pretty cool.

Actors we’re all great and the story was solid.

Why did they all flash? And why did they all Flash Forward to April 29, 2010 at 10 PM ??

No I haven’t read the book yet (Flashforward), though now i’m really tempted too. Though the book and the TV show apparently do not directly align with each other.

The other big questions at this early point are : Why 2 mins 17 seconds ?

I think the visualization of what would happen to our planet if everyone blanked out for 2 mins 17 seconds was amazing. First you think so what? right?

But with everyone on earth in cars, things moving about if you black out – chaos everyone that looked like a war zone.

How long this show will last..who knows..but for now at least I’m hooked.

Is it just us, or do you also thing that Season 2 of chad vader is dragging a bit?

Sure we love Chad, but this was kinda lame (watch for yourself below).

Long story short, Libby gets deported ..boohoo.

But we get a new villian the marshmellow bandito..yeaah it’s kinda lame too.

We need an emperor type or maybe a wookie or something funny and satirical tied to scifi

Defying Gravity – Beta is a fractal life form September 21, 2009

What is beta? Now we know.

ABC may have toasted Defying Gravity, but CTV in Canada hasn’t.

In fact CTV has aired the episode that everyone in the U.S wanted to see,the one where beta is finally revealed.

so here’s the spoiler — beta is an alien fractal life form.

It’s one of eight -and was found on Earth. The other seven objects are found on the planets that Antares are headed too. That is the real mission of ship.

The Alpha site – is Mars – Actually the same site where Donner lost Sharon years prior – as that was the true original mars mission too.

So the whole truth is now out, CTV will have a few more episodes where we’ll find out about beta’s true intentions…we still don’t know that…

Battlestar Galactica : The Second Coming. The Best BSG Movie We’ve Never Seen September 18, 2009

Ron Moore’s re-imagined Battlestar Galactica was great show until the final episode, but still we wish for the original don’t we?

As it turns out Richard Hatch (the original Apollo) tried in 1999 to get a new SG series on the air that would maintain the original 1978 show’s canon and history.

He apparently had 30 minutes of final footage which has never been shown publicly. But there is also a 4 minute trailer that give us a taste of the greatness that it could have been.

Many of the original BSG actors are in this and the SFX aren’t too bad either. I wish that Hatch would release the final 30 minutes, I’d pay to see it and I’d bet millions of other fans would too.

Fringe Season 2 Episode 1: Francis is An Alien Warrior September 18, 2009

fringeThe first episode of Fringe Season 2 was awesome wasn’t it?

First we think that Olivia is dead, then we get another new cast member.

Fringe division is shut down then it’s back.

And in between we get that awesome scene where the alien warrior is able to send messages across universes with the typewriter and the mirror.

neat stuff.

Agent Francis is now dead – a shame – but since the alien device is in Washington – the fake Francis is likely to be with us for a while. Sure makes for an interesting plot device doesn’t it?

I’m sooooooooooooo glad that Fringe is BACK!!

Battlestar Galactica The Plan on DVD Oct 27. Not on TV until 2010 September 17, 2009

theplan NO I don’t frakkin know why Starbuck is an Angel and yes the final episode of Battlestar Galactica SUCKED.

But we’re going to get a second chance. On October 27th the Battlestar Galactica movie The Plan is coming out on DVD. Originally it was first to be on TV, but now it’s not going to be broadcast until 2010.

Yes I’ve already pre-ordered by copy(Battlestar Galactica: The Plan
). I’m looking for redemption.

I’m looking for the awesomeness that was Battlestar Galactica to show up again.

I’m looking for the Evil Toasters to be Evil and not angels.

In some way this re-telling from the beginning reminds me of what happened with Babylon 5. First it was on TV and then the direct to video movies game out ()Battlestar Galactica: The Plan) and the movies were awesome, filling in all the blanks.

Will the Plan live up to our high expectations?

After the TOTAL FRAKKING DISASTER that was the BSG finale, so long as Starbuck isn’t an angel, this movie will be 10x better.

Star Tours is a classic Disney motion simulator ride…

But that’s just the prob isn’t it? It’s classic – it’s old and dated even more so than the Star Trek Experience was in Las Vegas.

After a magnificent run, Star Tours is now set to close in October of 2010. But within a year it will be replaced by Star Tours II

Not many details yet on the new ride, other than a slick podracer scene in the vid from Disney.

Defying Gravity CANCELLED – We will never know who Beta was September 14, 2009

defyingLast night’s episode – episode  (Love, Honor, Obey
) of Defying Gravity was one of the better episodes of the series.

We finally had some action – and we were on the verge of finding out who/what Beta was.

We’ll now never find out as the geniuses that run ABC have canceled Defying Gravity.

INSANE.

Sure the show was slow, but it was just building to its big resolution – the unveiling of Beta.

What a fraking waste of time. How could ABC cut it off now?

I just wanted to know what Beta was and what the real mission of Antares was all about, now what do i get? Nothing.

ABC apparently already ordered 13 episodes so there are a bunch more left to watch – maybe they’ll be a DVD set – we can only hope..

If you missed last night’s episode Amazon has it here:Love, Honor, Obey

** UPDATED ** As it turns out the remaining 5 episodes will be shown in Canada – let’s hope that Amazon picks them up and/or that they’ll be easily available online

Iain M. Banks : Use of Weapons : Amazing Ending, slow start September 13, 2009

useofweapons This is the second Ian M. Banks Culture novel we’ve read (the first was Consider Phelebas) and no it’s not as good as the first.

That’s not to say this isn’t a good book – but you just need a whole lot more patience.

Use of Weapons is all about a Culture agent known as Zalkawe who is used by the Culture to help influence events. The way the book is written is that there is a long of time jumping back an forth, some of it broken up nicely by different chapter number but not always.

At one point, we actually were ready to give up on this book, since it was so over-written and difficult to follow.

But this book does deliver at the end with a tremendously shocking conclusion that really was a surprise. Though this book was often plodding and dull the surprise ending really does help to make up for the slow start.

If this had been the first Banks book that we had ever read, there is little doubt that it would be our last. But the Culture is a cool idea and Consider Phelbas was such a brilliant novel that we just want to find more of the same.

This book could have been much better if it cut out 100 pages of wasted space and nonsense. It could have been better if the time jumping was more clear.

It is however a very deep and involving character driven story with (like we said) a fantastic ending that is amazing.

Iain M. Banks : Consider Phelbas : Review: AWESOME September 9, 2009

considerphelbas While I read a lot of science fiction, somehow I had never read Iain M. Banks.

I know, I know i’m a frakking nugget.

So over the summer I picked up Banks’ first SciFi novel (and first Culture novel) Consider Phelbas.

What an incredible ride. Sure there is the larger setting space opera stuff that is the Culture – which is cool

But it’s the story itself, Horza the Changer, the minds, the Idirans that plot twists and the incredible scenes that make this book one of my top three all time scifi novels.

The destruction of the Vavatch orbital with the Damage Game – wow. That could’ve been a book on its own.

The final battle in the caves of the dead world was such a page turner that i read for 10 hours straight till the end.

The end, well it seemed sudden and shocking to me in a way. I didn’t want this book to end.

While epilogues and appendices are usually items that are supplementary, in this case they are part of the story and are the true ending.

Yes this was my first Banks novel, my first culture novel, but it won’t be the last.

starwars.clone.warsDon’t know about you but we miss Clone Wars and can’t wait for season two to start.

We’ll all have to wait until Friday Oct 2nd though.

It looks like this year will mark the return of the Bounty Hunters, and in particular Mandalorian bounty hunters (not just Fett either).

If you’re looking for Star Wars The Clone Wars: The Complete Season One (TV Series)on DVD, you’ve got to wait until November 3rd to get your copy.

In the meantime, how about a nice little Season Two trailer to keep you interested?

defying From the ‘wtf is going on files:
We’ve watched 7 episode of Defying Gravity and we still don’t know what’s going on.

The last two episodes (6 & 7) could easily have been merged into one episode, but instead we’ve got this long drawn out piece of crap.

This show started off with a cool premise, and just like Antares itself, this show is going nowhere fast.
How many shows can you have about the same hallucination issue?

Where/what is Beta? We still don’t know and at this point I’m not sure if we care anymore either. At this stage it’s unlikely this show will last until the end of the year before ABC pulls the plug on this disaster.
