Blade Runner – REDONE? (again?!) April 26, 2007

Looks like a special 25th anniversary edition of Blade Runner is in the works.
BEST PART? Scene RESHOOTS!!
We’re not talking about Director’s Cut here where all they do is take out the bogus voice over narration. We’re talking about NEW footage.
At this stage we know only about one of the reshot pieces. Joanna Cassidy who played Zhora, one of the movie’s “replicants,” or androids confirmed on a blog post that she’s done a reshoot.
ZHORA of course has the awesome scene where Decker (Harrison Ford) shoots her and she goes crashing through all the retail windows.
No word yet on whether Harrison Ford is reshooting scenes too..but here’s hoping he is (and that this time the movie shows him to be the REPLICANT we all know he is!).
Just in case you don’t remember the scene….here it is:

The actress who played Zhora is really old. I am amazed she was still able to fit into her old costume after 20 years!
Star Wars 1-3 don’t so much need a remake, as an Unmake. It could bring our global population together, our mutual desire to re-write reality and forget these films EVER HAPPENED.
Bladerunner needs ‘enhancement’ and re-shot scenes as much the Mona Lisa needs her eyebrows, or Michaelangelo’s David needs a tight pair of Levi’s.
I respect the work Ridley Scott has done, but I fear he may have fallen to the Dark Side (the side where he bathes in crinkly green notes marked with dead presidents).
Not as troubling as the new ‘I Dream of Jeanie’ episodes with more impressive effects and yet another Darrin played by Nicholas Cage, but still… I can’t pretend to not be peeved.
This film has always been one of my faves and to see it altered in such a way really bums me out.
Wow, that is pretty ridiculous… yet kinda cool.

Not that there aren’t a lot of people who don’t have a point, but I will say in Ridley’s case that even the Director’s Cut which we know from video and a previous theatrical run was rushed to get to theatre, so Ridley’s final vision was never quite realized.
I’m willing to give Ridley the benefit of the doubt when it comes to coming up with a final cut that lives up to its amazing legacy. Should he screw it up, I will be the first to scream bloody murder. And I am sorry, but to anyone who says that this somehow compares to George Lucas and what he’s done to his franchise, sorry Ridley’s got nothing on him.
I knew Ridley would be doing something with BR for the anniversary, but I had no idea it involved re-shoots. . . We’ll see. I think what is saddest for me is the fact that this is the first Ridley Scott project I have looked forward to for a great while, and it is on a project 25 years old. To me, that’s the biggest shame.
Harrison Ford will never, ever work with Ridley Scott again.
She shoots first?
Maybe they will re-do every Harrison Ford movie so he always shoots second?

So many thoughts here….
1) Have they run out of ideas for anything new? What happened to imagination?
2) Aren’t the replicants going to be a long less believable when they have walkers and oxygen tubes in their noses?
3) If they do recast people, it just won’t be the same when that one replicant says “Wake up, time to die!”
They need to just leave it alone….
This is long overdue. The best way to go would be a set with all versions included. I hope R.S. dosen’t take too long with the transfer, because I can’t wait.
