30 years ago our world changed..dramatically.

It wasn’t that long ago was it? It couldn’t have been that far away…

BUT IT WAS.

I remember very well the first time i saw Star Wars in 1977. I remember wondering how they managed to get camera’s into outer space to film the sequences.

Beyond any shadow of a doubt Star Wars is the greatest film of all time. It introduces us to The Force
Jedi
Sith
Darth Vader
Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo (and yes HAN SHOT FIRST!).

Did Star Wars re-invigorate SciFi?? Of course it did. Without Star Wars, Star Trek The Movie never would have happened, there wouldn’t have been Battlestar Galactica or Buck Rodgers (tv version) either or even the Flash Gordon movie. SciFi would have remained a niche play, incapable of truly being mainstream.

Star Wars proved that SciFi – good scifi that looked real is something that everyone wants. SciFi wasn’t just for geeks anymore but became part of mainstream culture in a way that no other SciFi movie ever had done before.

Thank you Mr. Lucas and Happy 30th Anniversary. May The Force Be With You

Beautiful post! You’re absolutely right that Star Wars changed the sci-fi landscape. I think that happened in large scale because the movies told stories first and foremost. Space was the setting and technology was the vehicle that helped shape and move along the plot, but it was the story that made people love it.

And you’re dead-on about Han shooting first!

[…] Star Wars officially turns 30 today (so will I, in a little over a year). There’s a great article about it over at Show Me SciFi, in case you want to check it […]
