Mara Jade Skywalker didn’t have to die at the hands of Darth Caedus.

It was a wasted empty death…

Lucas Licensing apparently allowed this disaster to happen and now we should call on them to reverse it. The Sith have the power to bring back the dead and so too then does the Force.

Whether it is Ben or Luke Skywalker or even someone else I don’t care. I just want Mara Jade back.

To that end we here at ShowMeSciFi have started a petition to Bring Back Mara Jade.

Please sign in and together we can be THE FORCE that will bring Mara back.

Hey, Michael, Just curious. Exactly how do you think the books can be fixed? You mentioned that there was one way, and I would just like to know what that is.

I’ve heard a theory that Luke wakes up from a nightmare (which included everything from NJO-FOTJ) and finds everything in it’s previous un-screwed up way. (I think they did that on a TV show called “Dallas”, if I’m not mistaken).

Anyway seeing the latest “Star Trek” film got me thinking.

Oh, ANYBODY WHO HAS NOT SEEN THE LATEST STAR TREK FILM AND DOES NOT WANT TO BE SPOILED, PLEASE SKIP THE NEXT PARAGRAPH!!!

What if a bad guy like Nero (Eric Bana) came back in time and altered history? Would that work, because that’s the kind of angle I’d be willing to try if I got the opportunity to rewrite the SW series (which I would be more than willing to sell my soul for).

Apart from Mara Jade, I think the characters from the YJK/JJK series got screwed over too. I particularly loved the pairings. And look what happened to them:
Anakin/Tahiri- he died and she went crazy.
Jacen/Tenel Ka- they had a love child, then he went crazy, joined the Sith and killed our beloved Mara, only to be killed himself by his sister.
Jaina/Zekk- I really hate Jagged Fel, and I always have. Yet many of the Del Rey authors seem to treat him like some golden boy who will eventually become the f***ing Emperor, whereas poor Zekk gets constantly stepped on.

Anyway, I know that the chances of me being accepted to write a new canonical timeline are rather slim, but I will try for it anyway.

Call me crazy, but for me, fan fiction is not good enough! I love these characters with every fibre of my being, and I do not want to stop until they are set right again. Even if it means going to war against Del Rey!

I know I’m crazy, but hey, we all need something to believe in.

I can’t seem to bring up the older comments for some reason and internet explorer managed to wipe my comment with it’s neverceasing errors so I’ll just put the high points.

1. George Lucas doesn’t care so getting any help from the Lucasarts/Lucaslicensing side of the issue is a wasted effort.

2. Delrey clearly doesn’t care or they wouldn’t have allowed such bile spewing literary abortions as the LotF novels (I’m going to say 3-9) to be written let alone printed in the first place. In addition from their point of view they probably don’t even have a reason to bother in the first place since “soon” they’ll be in the Legacy comic era (yech.)

3. Denning is a hack so even if he cared would you really want Delrey’s staff writer to attempt to fix it even if he wasn’t the one principally to blame for breaking it in the first place?

4. The only methods by which I could imagine they would “fix” this would be some nonsensical (in my opinion) plot device like Luke wakes up from a coma (How I would love it if they put him in a coma), the now dead people were actually robots (or Pod People!), or something like that.

5. Though I don’t think any “fix” will ever be written in, I can hope they’ll repair the damage that has ruined my interest in the novel series that I’d been reading for nearly twenty years ironically enough primarily because of the interconnected storyline so good luck to anyone with the ability or more importantly the time to try.

(sigh) See it’s those reasons and more that make me wonder why the hell I bother. I’m not only a Mara Jade fan, I wanted Jaina to end up with Zekk, and the events that happened in the first two books of FOTJ just make me want to kill myself. Or at the very least drink just enough vodka and bourbon so that it numbs my feelings.

Oh, and for the record, I actually talked to Denning, and he said that he is just doing his job, which includes doing what the powers-that-be tell him to do. So technically that makes him a spineless hack to boot.

I just think about what has happened to the EU since the start of the NJO, and I just want to cry, scream, punch someone, or go on a killing spree.

I mean, I desperately want to rewrite the stories, but I just look at what Del Rey has done, and what they are STILL doing, and I might as well try climbing Mt Everest with no mountain-climbing training.

I guess there is no hope left. Is there?

Bored - Michael's avatar 4. Bored - Michael - August 1, 2009

Denning is a hack yes, but the fact that he now claims to anyone who he talks to (generally questionaires etc.) that he was forced into writing the novels that way, and forced into killing that character and sparing that character etc is pure bs.

1. That’s not what he was saying prior to and just after Invincible was written.

2. I sincerely doubt that someone (even a hack) with as many novels under their belt as he does could be bullied into writing anything.

3. He as I mentioned was responsible for nearly 50% of the novels at the end of the timeline that remained to be printed on Delrey’s license.

4. He has personally stated that not only did “they” I’m presuming he refers to the “editor” responsible for Delrey’s EU novels Sue what’s her face thought Jacen’s character had served it’s purpose by the end of the NJO they have had even less to say of Mara Jade, Admiral Palleon, and admittedly lesser characters like Isoldor.

5. In my personal opinion I find it hard to believe that three authors in a collaborative effort with a supposed editor even if they had decided everything in committee as they later claim could manage for such glaring plotholes, piss poor writing etc.

Lets not forget the lousy plot devices like nanovirus (Denning needs to take a biology class if he thinks that explanation he gave for why the “Fett” virus wouldn’t kill any of his cronies’ clones) or a galactically renowned assassin sneaking around in a cave by themself trying to kill someone who would presumably be a tough nut to crack; or my personal favorite the all powerful Luke Skywalker who had to learn the ways of the force by writing them out on a shovel with a piece of charcoal…… managed to use his mental influence (that I could swear I had heard someplace was only supposed to work on the ‘weak minded’ but I might be making that up….) on someone who was from the same bloodline as he himself who had the benefit of shall we say “formal” training for the entirety of his life.

6. No, this series wasn’t the fault of Aaron Allston (his novels didn’t seem to do much but they are garbage by association). Karen Traviss who’s contribution was one gigantic prepositional phrase that was badly written because I have to imagine she was dividing her time between these and her Clone Wars books (which I honestly didn’t mind that much, except of course for the rushed finale ‘Four Mandolorian weddings and a funeral) and the fact that I think she in addition to Denning really have no attachment to the series in general. Lastand certainly least Troy Denning who seems to look at the EU and see a paycheck. I would expect someone who lists their occupation as “author” to be more respectful of what amounts to a lot of other people’s hard work to establish what is increasingly further and less associated with much of anything that George Lucas had any involvment with (not that he’d care anyway because we know he sees nothing but a paycheck.)

I would point out that I would hope that they would come to their senses about this garbage they heaped onto us, unfortuneatly so long as some people will buy these books for no other reason than it says Star Wars on the cover they won’t care about fringe people who actually had an interest in the series on its own merit.

In the end, if you want change I would urge people to keep asking or better yet demanding it; though in this regard I’ve no clue how as every method of contact to Delrey that I could find (admittedly nearly a year ago) led to busted links, subsidiary websites with no real connection or in one case an address on a link from their site to another site to contact them to another site to contact this subsidiary printer to a page that finally had a mailing address that made no sense “123 Rivington Street NYNY, 10455” Now I don’t know about you but I find it hard to believe all this crap was going down somewhere in the Bronx according to that zip code.

If you or anyone else has managed to find contact information to someone responsible for this mess I know I’d like to see it and I doubt I’m the only one; until then I’ll be passively protesting (which is easy when interest hasn’t so much been lost as shot in the face and ground up in a woodchipper) by simply not buying their novels of any sort.

Wannabe author's avatar 5. Wannabe author - August 3, 2009

Hmm. Kind of makes you want to play Russian Roulette, doesn’t it?

BTW, I loved the woodchipper reference. Reminded me of ‘Fargo’. Good movie, by the way.

But I will agree that the whole aspect of characters like Jacen, Mara, Pellaeon and Isolder having served their purpose by the end of the series is without a doubt the biggest load of horse shit since the world’s largest stallion had the world’s worst case of diarrhea.

As I have mentioned before, I LOVED Jacen and the other YJK/JJK characters. They were meant to be the next generation, and yet they were (as you so eloquently put it) shot in the face and ground up in a woodchipper. And, of course, there was Mara, whom this whole thing was about.

It’s like those authors didn’t even CARE about what happened. They probably just see the characters as mere tools, and couldn’t give a flying crap what happened to them. And the new author for the Fate of the Jedi series, Christie Golden, has not improved things. In fact, she has quickly earned my ire in a VERY BIG WAY!

If I had known that things would get this bad, I would have burnt down Del Rey’s main building and killed all the authors and publishers.

I mean, apart from Mara being gone, who have we got? We’ve got Jaina, who has not been a good character since she hooked up with Jagged “I’m a complete loser with as much personality as a cardboard box, but many fans won’t mind because I shack up with Jaina, and I’m supposedly good looking” Fel (sorry, just REALLY hate him, and would love to kill some J/J shippers), there’s Ben, there’s Allana, but not much else because the authors never seem to focus on any of the other characters because they’re too busy screwing up the Skywalker/Solo family.

No wonder I’m so depressed. I mean, I would love to rewrite the stories, and nothing says that I can’t. It’s just getting others to accept it as the new canon that’s going to really f-ck me up!

Madman007's avatar 6. Madman007 - August 6, 2009

Don’t know if anyone’s seen this, but it’s very interesting.
**”During a discussion of “Flow-walking,” a Force-ability that originated in Denning’s Dark Nest Trilogy that allows the limited manipulated of time, he admitted that the Legacy of the Force team had considered using the power to bring back Han Solo and Princess Leia’s youngest son, whom has been dead since Denning’s 2001 New Jedi Order epic, Star by Star.”**
They didn’t of course. What did Denning say about not doing it? “I was worried about the end of the series being too dark when I killed my second Solo son.”
Too dark? TOO &*%$# DARK!????? Too LATE by the middle.
I didn’t read past Sacrifice not because of the injustice done to Mara, but over the treatment of her funeral in Inferno. It was so dishonorable to her character that I almost threw the book across the book store (of course, I didn’t because I would have had to pay for it and I wasn’t going to pay for poodoo like that). However, when I read spoilers from the further novels, my hope started to brighten when I heard about “flow walking”. I thought maybe they can flow walk back into time and reverse her death somehow.
Alas, it was not to be, and I continued to shake my head in disgust over what is being called Star Wars.
Yet, I also go to many Star Wars sites and the majority of fans are only interested in the movies only. Many don’t even know anything about the EU or even care.
So I read this “revelation” by Denning and Co. about this idea they shot down because they didn’t want to “open a can of worms”. Didn’t they realize they had already opened it way back by killing Anakin Solo in the first place?
By the way, if you want to hear Denning at ComicCon, here’s the link to the youtube site:

So…

Is there any way that WE can fix it? Because we seem to be the only ones interested in doing so.

I really am surprised that some people are still reading this crap. I really am.

“Karen Traviss Bids Farewell To SW Novels”

There IS A God !!!!!

Madman007's avatar 9. Madman007 - August 8, 2009

Actually, I don’t think there are as many people as we think who are still reading the new novels. Of course, we will never know the numbers but I’m sure with this deteriorating economy, sales ain’t exactly going through the roof.

I also noticed in my Sci Fi book club that they are hardly advertising any new Star Wars books and the ones that are being advertised are in the “clearance” section.

Unfortunately, unlike Star Trek, Star Wars canon is straightforward because GL doesn’t want it changed. On the other hand, he also doesn’t care one iota about the EU (and neither do most fans-as I said here a while back, a fellow SW fan actually had never heard of Mara Jade. “Luke got married?” he asked.)

So don’t expect any reboots of the franchise. We will have to make do with what we have in the past or make it up on our own in fan fiction.

Wannabe author's avatar 10. Wannabe author - August 10, 2009

No reboots? That is just so damned depressing! I would sell my soul if it meant we could get a reboot from the start of NJO onwards. Like I mentioned, I loved the YJK/JJK characters, and they got the biggest raw deal from NJO onwards.

Oh, and Mara, of course! How could I forget her!

And if I can’t wish for a reboot, what the hell can I wish for?

Man, I need a drink.
