Tron
Time sure does fly.
It was 31 years ago today that Tron first hit the movie theaters.
No we didn’t see it on opening day – but we were there opening weekend.
We owned the Intellivision-Intelli voice Tron games
and yeaah
We LOVED all things Tron.
That first Tron move made sense. A human inside the machine fighting the MCP …no Clue here…
Tron Legacy looked better than that first movie – for sure..but the story just isn’t nearly as good.
Tron’s legacy for a myriad of reasons didn’t do so well 31 years ago. Today the latest Tron Uprising show (which is awesome) hasn’t been renewed and the minor Tron renewal that Tron Legacy might have spawned seems to have died.

After years of waiting … the move we first saw trailers for as TR2N in 2008 – is now out as Tron Legacy.
Make no mistake about it, Tron Legacy is a very different movie than the original Tron.
It’s bigger.
And in IMAX 3D the experience is mind-blowing AWESOME.
The Daft punk soundtrack is incredible (and dirt cheap at Amazon: Tron Legacy). The new light cycles are awesome looking machines and the eerie blue and reddish neon colors of the grid are striking.
This is a visual masterpiece of cinematography and special effects that simply put — has no peer.
The story is OK — but not nearly as good as the original Tron. The whole isomorph subplot is interesting but not as clean as just simply having Tron fight the MCP.
Having Tron as Rizler – now that was a neat twist. And CLU is an interesting bad guy ..the mirror image of Flynn.
We also really liked that one girl in white – Jen? that gets Sam suited up in the first place, and then is out on the grid strolling with umbrella. kinda neat.
However we missed the light tanks, and a sense of purpose for the grid in the first place. The finale was also a bit odd, but it does bring an end to Flynn.
Overall, this is really good movie and one that we enjoyed tremendously. After over two years of buildup by Disney’s hype machine, this movie delivered in nearly every way and is a stunning achievement of modern movie making magic.

One of the new clips that Disney showed us last night at Tron Night was one where Quorra meets Sam and gets him off the grid.
What’s interesting is that this is a non-lightcycle vehicle and that they can actually go off the grid…and oh yeah they’re headed to see Sam’s dad..

Remember the great Intellivision games that came out when Tron debuted?
They were specifically for the Intellivoice Module and they were awesome. This time around, we’re still months away from the movie and the games but we’ve got our first trailer…

The original Tron movie was all about living inside a video game – and the same will be true for Tron 2 – now known as Tron Legacy.
The first official Tron Legacy game is called Tron Evolution and is set to be out in 2010.
Yeaah it looks like Deadly Disks are back, Solar Surfer too – remember those great intellivision games from the 80’s…we sure do those were the first great Intellivoice games…

Yeaah we’re pumped for Tron 2..we sure have waited long enough.
Last year they were going to call it TR2N which was one of the coolest names for a flick ever.
Now the Mickey Mousketeers and Disney have butchered that and are now calling the moving Tron Legacy.
Isn’t that a little lame?
Early footage looks awesome though – as soon as we can find a public link to post we will!
Principal photography apparently has already wrapped up and we shouldn’t expect to the movie until 2011.

House actress Olivia Wilde is playing an as yet undisclosed character in the new TR2N (Tron 2) movie. In a interview over on SciFi Wire she doesn’t tell much other than that she’s excited about the role.
Garrett Hedlund has been cast as the male lead (he was in Troy) but don’t forget Bruce Boxleitner and Jeff Bridges will be back too.

The original Tron was a great idea and it’s a movie that as SciFi fans we’ve all seen. Does it really need a remake?
Maybe but Disney thinks a sequel is better!! (and so do we)…I wonder if they’ll go into a multi-core Intel CPU this time and fight off Microsoft Windows with Linux penguins…
When Tron was made the IBM PC was just hitting shelves and the only competition was the Apple ][e. There was no Windows, Linux or MAC. Viruses hadn’t yet hit either – the world’s largest networking vendor Cisco was just being founded…it was a very different (and infantile in comparison) computer industry.
The first trailer showed up this week at Comic-con to the Tron sequel TR2N- it’s got the light racer bikes and the deadly disks and even Jeff Bridges..but it’s missing the classic Tron soundtrack…
