Mara Jade Skywalker didn’t have to die at the hands of Darth Caedus.

It was a wasted empty death…

Lucas Licensing apparently allowed this disaster to happen and now we should call on them to reverse it. The Sith have the power to bring back the dead and so too then does the Force.

Whether it is Ben or Luke Skywalker or even someone else I don’t care. I just want Mara Jade back.

To that end we here at ShowMeSciFi have started a petition to Bring Back Mara Jade.

Please sign in and together we can be THE FORCE that will bring Mara back.

Yeah, they need to save Mara and bring her back to the EU. It can be done. I feel Del Rey has killed off one of the most notable characters from the EU. One of the only reasons I read these novels is because of Mara Jade. It can be reversed, and it should be done! I feel Zahn would be the perfect Author to bring her back. He did create her after all eh?

BRING HER BACK!
SAVE MARA!

I’m sure there would be quite a few people willing to voice their support for this if there was a way to reverse what happened in their canon or if Delrey gave a crap. Though frankly I’d rather see them not screw up Jacen Solo I’d think more support would be garnered in trying to undo every ridiculous thing that happened in LotF in general.

Never mind undoing LOTF, they need to do the same thing with NJO. I’m planning on becoming a sci fi author, and as soon as that happens, I’m rewriting everything from Vector Prime onwards! I’d make sure that none of the Solo kids or their friends get screwed up!

Somebody wish me luck!

Thanks Maggie.

But how do I deal with the fact that the current crop of authors are STILL spewing out these crap books which are being accepted as the official version? And all those fans who support them, or at the very least have an opinion on them? And how can I get mine published and accepted as the new version?

I know it shouldn’t be such a big deal, but I have Asperger’s Syndrome. For me, a small issue sometimes becomes a big hassle.

So, what should I do?!

You can do what I did.
Totally trash all future profic novels that will no longer have our favorite heroine in them and write your own as fan fiction.
First off, you will NEVER be able to publish a new version of Star Wars canon. You wouldn’t believe the process it takes for Lucasfilm to choose their authors. They are too focused on the marketing of the books over their quality.
To me, fan fiction IS the canon. It’s written by the fans and we don’t care about getting a percentage. We only care about the characters. Which is a hell of alot more than I can say for Del Rey.
To paraphrase Neo from Matrix, There is no canon. Since they care not to write characters as they should be written, I no longer have respect for any of the official authors.
Wannabe author, I suggest you write away. Add Mara Jade into any setting, any AU, anything you wished she could be (that’s including my personal hot tub! Hee!) Then go to http://boards.theforce.net/ and add your story. No, it won’t be published. But it will be appreciated by the true fans of Star Wars.
And may I add, Long Live Mara Jade !!!!

While I don’t really care for fanficiton (some is well written but a fair bit is just stupid (ie. Hutt drug dens filled with doped out naked Twilek dancers….) I’m afraid there won’t be any rewriting or going back unless they write in some half assed dream sequence or vision which would be both a blessing and a curse because I wouldn’t trust Denning to write a coherent manual for a two slot toaster let alone find their way out of the corner they’ve painted themselves into.

Delrey clearly doesn’t care their go-to guy Denning clearly doesn’t care as he’s contributed the character “Allana” which was really nothing more than a pretense for having him turn evil to rehash episodes 1-3 to both sell books with shock tactics and restore (after a fashion) Luke to his “rightful” place as the most powerful being in the galaxy (after all that would be far easier to write.) oh and he ripped off bug hordes from the fifties so there we go.

Lucasarts (Lucaslicensing) doesn’t care because George Lucas doesn’t care, he’s stated on multiple occasions that he “doesn’t read any of that” etc in regards to the EU because he is under the misguided notion that the work of Timothy Zahn or Aaron Allston (of course I’m referring to the X-wing series) and other authors had nothing to do with keeping people into Star Wars between 1980 and 1999.

No, if people want good “official version” novels there is only one way that would ever happen and unfortuneately that won’t happen because of the people who will buy anything simply because of the Star Wars logo. In short I’d say we’re screwed.

It’s great to see y’all so fired up, STILL! Re-freshing!!!!! I’m a Jacen Solo fan and would’ve loved it if they wouldn’t have kill his character off. I’m not supporting the new novels at all. It’s bad that the series is soo messed up. I’d love to be into these books again. Why don’t they care dudes?? For the record, I’m new-ish to the books, started on Betrayel and went back to Traitor and restarted from there, and was hooked. Verger, Vong, Jacen, Luke, Mara, all were and are needed to make a great series. too bad for us readers. just too bad uh?

I started reading them when I was in grade school and continued reading them up until Exile (I did read the remainder of that literary disease that was LotF out of stubborness but I don’t consider that to be the same) the disgusting way in which they just brutalized their own series for the sake of selling books has completely turned me off of them and that is what I dislike the most.

I used to look forward to the next book in the series, I read Order 66 which was half assed to say the least and I only read it because I’d already paid for it but Millenium Falcon onward I can’t even get up enough interest to so much as read the back of the jacket and frankly I find that sad.

Moreso than being sad, it’s just stupid. My original copy of Heir to the Empire is so old it’s actually yellowed like an untouched library book yet I still have it; that’s a brand loyalty if nothing else you’d think DelRey and Lucasarts (Lucaslicensing in this case) would care about yet they clearly didn’t.

Lucaslicensing has George Lucas’ incorrect assumption that people only cared about his six movies, I for one would like to know just how much he’s made off of licensed products to warrant such disregard……

DelRey had this series comprising 90% of the remaining titles to be printed under it’s license at the time. Perhaps I’m reading into it but the fact that trade magazines etc. at the time were speaking of the possibility of them not getting their license renewed by Lucaslicensing would indicate to me that they had very little to lose by sabotaging the running story in order to rake in as much cash as possible.

Ultimately I would say the only way to “fix” the poor writing that Troy Denning has gotten the series into (and yes it was Troy Denning you can’t write 60% of the last ten novels under their license for that timeline and not have it be your fault) is to simply not buy their books, unfortuneatly as with most other industries it seems anymore quality falls by the wayside because having the feeling of accomplishment for a job well done isn’t as comforting as a wallet full of undeserved cash.

In the end though as with my previous statement, we’re screwed because some people who consider themselves fans yet feel nothing at being sold crap will continue to pour their money into their pockets and swamp the impact of those of us who won’t.

Bored - Michael's avatar 10. Bored - Michael - July 21, 2009

Bah, sorry for whatever reason I was thinking there were only six books in the LotF series (shows how well I remember them..) so that would be closer to 50% of the last thirteen novels which is much better……….
