After having owned this book for more than a month, I’m finally ready to write a review of Star Wars Legacy of the Force Sacrifice.

With little doubt this is the worst book in the series so far.

That’s not to say that Sacrifice is a bad book, it’s just that the others ( Exile, Betrayal , Bloodlines and Tempest) are significantly better stories that are better written.

This book is a vehicle for only two things, showing Jacen’s decent to becoming Darth Caedus and the rise Boba Fett as a real leader of Mandalore.

Other issues that this series has been dealing with are neglected and shamefully so.

Ben Skywalker kills the leader of the Correllian government and yet we barely get a graph about what is going on in Corellia.

Han and Leia Solo are far too absent for this story – sure they were over-represented in Exile but their lack of commentary on Jacen’s ascent to power is ludicrous.

While i was certainly time challenged in the month in which i read this book, the simple truth is that this book was not a page turner and didn’t keep me as engaged as the rest. Sure i knew what the outcome was to be, but the path to getting there wasn’t terribly exciting.

Jacen’s decent to the dark side in this book is weak. His ‘Sacrifice’ poorly developed – The whole tassles thing in the previous books a waste. Mara Jade Skywalker’s death a waste.

Lumiya’s death at the hands of Luke Skywalker was also something that i found to be – ‘offensive’. Luke is not a Sith and doesn’t walk around decapitating his enemies (no matter how emotional he might be).

And what of Darth Caedus. He kills Mara and then goes to Ziost. Why not Korriban? Why not ask Lumiya for a Sith Holocron?? Something that can help??

Now Caedus claims to be a master yet he had no master himself. He just became Sith.

Hopefully the next book in the series is better than this one – hopefully it explores and provides proper rationale for what is going on instead of taking wild unbelievable tangents.

Certainly we the fans will read whatever is out – but we the fans deserve better than what we got with Sacrifice.

I have to agree with the reviewer here. I personally did not have a problem with Mara’s death here but I do have a problem with the way that the author totally changed the already developed “personalities” of the established Characters like Luke and Mara.

Mara would have told Luke that Jacen was working with Lumiya PERIOD. Whether it was a message or something after she had gone after him or before she went after him she would have made sure that he knew so that Luke would know how much trouble Ben and everyone was in by being around and influenced by Jacen.

She made Luke into a complete bumbling idiot that could make up his mind about what shoes he should wear much less how to stop a sith.

This novel did alot to move the story along but it was done at the expense of the characters themselves. Definitely NOT worth the money I paid to buy it.

Meant to say that Luke could NOT make up his mind about anything.

Also a plot point here I have a problem with.

How could Ben not know that Jacen killed his mom? Everyone knows that Jacen was there and everyone knows exactly when she was killed. Ben was even in communication with the Sith sphere while the whole fight was going on. He knows that Mara was going after Jacen and he was the one that stopped the sphere from destroying Jacen after he fired on the sphere and Lumiya to kill her.

That whole ending that was written was just pathetic. A 5 year old could make out who killed Mara!! As soon as Tenel Ka mentioned that Jacen had been there and Ben told Luke that he knew that Lumiya wasn’t the one that killed Mara Luke WOULD have known that it was Jacen.

Like I said previously an absolute waste of money to buy this book.

I know i’m a little late to this party, but i’m with the reviewer here. I’m not necessarily a fan of Karen Traviss or her writing style, but that being said, Sacrifice is far and away the weakest novel of the series so far. There were two distinct plot lines in the novel that did not come together cohesively at any point. I found myself continually putting the book down because whatever pace was established with the Jacen/Ben/Sith plot line was brought to a screeching halt when the Fett plot line took over.

Having been a fan of the Jacen Solo character since its inception in Zahn’s The Last Command and particularly since McIntyre’s The Crystal Star. I HATE that he was the character chosen to bring back the Sith. While the character has always been esoteric, i felt that the Vergere plot line showed him as weak, and although i thought the writers moved Jacen beyond that, he was once again manipulated in this new series.

I also felt the death of Mara was wasted and a terrible plot decision. With that in mind, i thought much of the plot was poorly structured and that the bevy of Force/Sith/Jedi lore-material in the Star Wars “universe” should have been something the author relied upon and not pushed aside.

All in all, boo Karen Traviss.
