Mara Jade Skywalker didn’t have to die at the hands of Darth Caedus.
It was a wasted empty death…
Lucas Licensing apparently allowed this disaster to happen and now we should call on them to reverse it. The Sith have the power to bring back the dead and so too then does the Force.
Whether it is Ben or Luke Skywalker or even someone else I don’t care. I just want Mara Jade back.
To that end we here at ShowMeSciFi have started a petition to Bring Back Mara Jade.

i tried reading the NJO and some of the other books but they all suck, even worse than k.j.anderson’s (the sun crusher, cmon? how stupid was that). i can’t even finish the various series i’ve started even if it’s just to see how things end. that’s how bad they are. the only worthwhile star wars books are Zahn’s (there’s no beating his heir to the empire trilogy and his other ones while not matching the brilliance of that trilogy are still better than all the other crap out there), the x-wing rogue squadron ones are good, wraith squadron is decent. i gave up on the newer ones long ago and with the news of mj’s death the only books I will ever read from the EU are zahn’s, unless they bring mj back. and then i’d only read about her return. all the other “authors” that i’ve read are just hacks. their writing is just horrible, and I said this before the deaths. I also agree that anakin was the only worthwhile solo kid and it pissed me off that they destroyed him.
so long live zahn (the only true master of the EU) and mara jade!
Star Wars is in transition people.
Han, Leia and Luke are going to be collecting Social Security soon. Wedge, Janssen, and Tycho have all retired and comeback multiple times. Admiral Pellaeon was killed in the Legacy series to move the Imperial remnant forward, he had to die in battle.
The NJO series lost a lot of readers because story lines were old and stale.
Jaina will be the new Mara and Leia rolled into one. Ben is going to be the new Luke, with Luke taking the Obe Wan job as the deep meditating advisor.
For those that left during the NJO, now is a good time to come back. The Legacy series is much better and is in the style of the original expanded universe.
Sorry…beg to differ, Kuzindwight. You’re entitled to your opinion, but let me rebut some items you pointed out.
Having another Skywalker go to the Dark Side isn’t old and stale?
Jaina will NEVER be a new Mara; there IS no replacement for Mara Jade. And she won’t be another Leia considering what happens in Invincible (read the spoilers if you care to).
Same goes for Ben being a new Luke. Luke was naive and impatient in his youth while Ben has already experienced what the Dark Side can affect, so he has already learned 4-5 years before Luke did.
Ever since the TTT series, characters have been misinterpreted by too many different authors and some who are not even Jedi fans. I don’t remember the original expanded universe glorifying Madalores.
And finally, both NJO and LOTF series have darkened the whole Star Wars series to the point where there is no hope; only death and despair.
THAT is not the Star Wars I want.
So go ahead and read LOTF and further if you want to make the execs of DR richer.
I’m not giving them one more cent.
I’ll stick to authors who are fans and who care about these characters. And they don’t get any compensation. Only satisfaction.
I’ve read a lot of the comments above now and having been a SW fan for over thirty years and read every book, Mara one indeed one of my favorite characters and a great contrast to Leia as well. I like how they got very close and she became a very powerful Master as well. My friend and I who also read all the books were pissed that they killed Chewie off, then Anakin who I agree was the best of the Solo kids and now Mara.
Mara was actually present in Return of the Jedi. If you look at the scene when Jabba sends the dancer down to the Rancor and everyone rushes foreward to watch the show, you’ll see a slender girl with a nice body, Dark hair and a RED jump suit coming forward as well to watch. This is just how they described Mara in all the books. Her hair could easily be a wig or dyed but she’s the only human there. I noticed her long before Thrawns books came out because she always seemed out of place there. So I would say that would have to be her as there is no other reason for that person to be there.
I can agree that when a beloved character dies it does feel like a member of your own family dies too. My friends and I were also pretty peeved that Mara bought it. Sure it makes sense story wise and all but I guess after Chewie and Anakin a main character like her going was a bit too much. You kind of thought that after 16 years of being in nearly all the books that she would be around for a while longer. I loved the bond between her and Luke, her and Liea and the solo kids, her fiesty spirit, great Jedi skills and general respect that she had from all the Jedi too. It was good knowing that there was someone skilled in governments, Jedi ways as well as darker arts when needed.
Her battle with Jacen was very good and she was actually winning which you could see even surprised Jacen. Her raw force powers coupled with her insane drive to stop him for the sake of her son and the galaxy almost paid off. Even Jacens greater powers were unable to overcome her sheer determination and her own deep well of power in the force, very good battle.
Though with the poison, why she didn’t do the same thing she did when she fought the first Yuhzong Vong and his Amphistaff bit her, she used the force to cause a spurt of blood to come out and flush out the poison right away. Perhaps she was too tired or this might have been a much faster poison, who knows for sure though.
Well I would like to see her come back, but I don’t think that it will happen. Though by now we know that she appeared at least twice as a force ghost, but it’s rough for Luke and Ben. It took Luke so long to find someone to finally be happy with and she too had to be taken away from him. If they can bring her back somehow that makes sense, perhaps it was a clone of her that was killed or such, that would be great. If not, just as in real life we’ll have to deal and go on living too.

I would like to make a correction on JediRich’s comment that Mara Jade is in ROTJ. This is not true. ROTJ was written in the early 80’s with the movie coming out in ’83. Timothy Zahn created Mara Jade in 1990-91 when the Thrawn books first came out. You could find that “slender girl with a nice body, dark hair and a RED jump suit” and believe it’s Mara; but in reality, Mara wasn’t conceived as of that time yet. And Lucas didn’t “add” Mara in the special edition in ’97 either. Personally, I don’t believe Lucas cares what happens in the EU.
However! Find the ROTJ radio drama on tape or cd and “Arica” makes an appearance as she speaks to C3PO to ask when Skywalker is coming. That was made in 94 and it does include “Mara” as Arica.
And mara fan 1, I will go a step further and say:

“Star Wars is in transition”? Oh please! Star Wars started to suffer with that giant pile of crap called the NJO, and LOTF probably just gave it yet another blow to the groin! I’ve had high hopes for Mara Jade, the Solo kids and their friends, and many more of the so-called “next generation” since long before those idiots at Del Rey took over. Now we’ve had one Solo son getting killed off before he could reach his full potential, another getting killed after knocking up his girlfriend and falling to the Sith, and the daughter has had more romance issues than the average teenage drama queen! (And personally, I’m not a fan of Jag Fel. To me, he has about as much personality than a cardboard box.)
I loved the YJK series, and was thoroughly disappointed with what happened to those characters in NJO. I kept holding out hope that things will turn out all right. But I probably would have had a better chance of bedding Gemma Atkinson! (which is VERY appealing, but kinda besides the point.)
So thank you very much Del Rey! You have completely screwed up Star Wars. I think I’m gonna go to sleep now and don’t wake me up until somebody decides to retcon NJO and LOTF out of existence and rewrite the whole damn thing!
So I might as well either sleep forever or just rewrite the whole damn thing myself, regardless of whether I have the blessing from Lucas or not!

Bring Back Mara Jade Skywalker!
I haven’t read any SW books since the NJO and most of those I ended up skimming. The Jacen plotline was the most interesting of the entire series and given the character development that took place, I do not believe he would ever become a dark lord. I certainly won’t be reading this series now as the butchery of Jacen’s character is unforgiveable.
I don’t actually think Mara Jade should be brought back because that would only compound the error of judgment shown in the direction the series has taken. Ever since Zahn’s trilogy, she has been my favorite character. I’d say that I will miss her, but the EU series are no longer a part of my canon.
