We really haven’t seen that much of Carter in Stargate Atlantis Season 4. She’s not much of a hands on commander and she lacks the presence that made Dr. Weir such a compelling character.
Now it turns out that Amanda Tapping (the actress who plays Col. Carter) is set to devote more of her time to the new Sanctuary SciFi series. Apparently she may make some ‘guest’ appearances in Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis.
Will we miss Col.Carter??
I don’t think so. She’s really been a non-factor in Season 4. The braniac role that she filled in SG-1 still belongs to Dr.McKay.

Yes, a non-factor indeed. I regret Elizabeth very much. I loved Sam Carter in SG-1 but as a commander she’s not good at all. I don’t understand why they bothered to bring her at all.
Unfortunately Atlantis cannot seem to keep its crew together. What I loved about SG-1 (and especially about TNG which still is my favourite) is that the crew esentially stayed the same for the entire show, no matter how many seasons it had (Tasha Yar being the exception). The way they bring characters in and then throw them out again is unnerving.
[…] what about Col Carter!!! We’ve known for months that she would be replaced by Wolesly but the way the episode ended leaves the reasons all up in the […]

Well, I guess your entitled to your opinion! Are you blond by any chance?
I think your all missing the point! If Sam was an ineffectual commander don’t blame the character, blame the writers! An actor is only as good as his or her lines, give a bad actor great lines and they become a great actor, gave an actor very little to say and they come off as bad or boring.. It’s certainly not fair to blame Amanda, she wasn’t given enough decent lines or adventures throughout most of the season to make anyone very interesting.. If the writers had seen fit to put her and Mckay together more often for some of their humorous ‘brain’ wars or, perhaps, began to develope a romantic relationship with Sheppard, I think her role as the new commander would have been much better received.. Weir was always involved in most of the episodes when she was there, but let’s face it, it’s the characters that are going through the gate that are having all the fun and all the best scenes.. Anyway, I always resent it when people diss the actor, when it’s the writers they should be putting the blame on..
no-one is missing the point here.
I have only recently got into stargate atlantis during the latter end of the 3rd season/4th season onwards.
I have to say Colonel Carter is terrible in the role and as an actress she does not bring any charisma to her acting role.
I have no idea why Dr Weir left but they shold have just got on without her, it completely spoils the show
I’m not sure what the writers thought they were doing with Amanda Tapping as commander in Atlantis. In one neat stroke, the character removed all interpersonal conflict. She and Rodney outgrew their SG-1 squabbling, she outranked Sheppard, she got to be best gal-pals with all the female leads and secondary characters, and wasn’t allowed to have so much as a shred of sexual chemistry with any of the characters in the shadow of the Love that Dare Not Defy Regulations from her SG-1 days. As alternately juvenile and schoolmarmish as Elizabeth Weir’s reactions to the shenanigans of her team, there was at least *conflict.* Sam Carter was written as a sexless rubber stamp on the action around her.
Amanda Tapping was great through out the whole SG 1 series, and when the characters of Dr. Weir and Mayor Carter coincided on season 7 the contrast was incredible and the charisma was, I believe, on the side of Amanda’s character side. I totally agree with Snowycat it’s not the actors fault if she or he gets a bad sceen play and very little on screen time, lines and interesting story lines. I think Carter’s character and Amanda Tapping, who played her, are both great, as they proved during the 10 seasons of SG-1. It’s a pitty that the writers for Atlantis couldn’t keep the escence of the character. C’mon, after 10 years where she is clearly the “brightest mind” in the Stargate community, suddenly she becomes dumb, lags behind Rodney and stops making a difference.
Again, not the actors fault, totally the writers, at least on this case.
