We have long suspected that the classic Star Wars cast would return for Star Wars Episode VII.
Now know that to be a fact.
Disney today announced that the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker will be back for Episode VII. They will be joined by John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow.
“We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again,” Director J.J. Abrams said in a statement. “We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”
Oh and they posted a picture to prove it too:
Star Trek: The Fall – Another Masterful series extends the Star Trek Canon January 19, 2014

We’ve never been fans of the new rebooted Trek franchise, which is why the Star Trek book that live on in the ‘legacy’ universe are so very much appreciated by us.
The lastest big Star Trek ‘event’ series , known as The Fall – once again re-affirms our faith in all that is good about Star Trek and Star Trek books. This isn’t a big scifi exploration or thought adventure, but rather a scifi policitical drama with more twist, turns, drama that we can count.
Political intrigue, action galore – each book in the series building on the next, each extending the story in new and meaningful ways and each enjoyable in it own right.
Star Wars: Crucible – the Worst Star Wars book of 2013? January 1, 2014

Troy Denning has written a bunch of really solid Star Wars books in his career, Crucible is not one of them. This book is easily the worst Star Wars book we read all 2013 (finished NYE), with little direction, point, plot or real energy.
The writing is poor and clealry is rushed and uneditted to the point where we were skipping over entire paragraphs of garbarge that felt like they were there just to meet some arbitrary word count. Sure it’s neat to see Vestara Khai again, though her role here is a bit muted and our regular cast of character, Han, Luke, Leia are all now apparently going to take a break of some sort….
Though given that Luke was on hiatus from the Jedi Order and Coruscant for much of the Fate of the Jedi series, he’s ‘away’ more often then not.
Overall, a waste of time.

The day of the doctor..the 50th anniversary episode of Doctor Who was one for the ages. Ever since Doctor Who came back on air 7 years ago we have all wondered about the true fate of Gallifrey…and sure we had that episode where Timothy Dalton comes in as the President of Gallifrey which is time locked..but lets forget that for a moment.
This new moment Gallifrey Lives.
And for the first time in more than 25 years we have seen the great Tom Baker return in a Doctor Who episode.
Epic.

Star Wars Dawn of the Jedi : Into the Void – REVIEW – Good Fun/Suck A$$ ending September 3, 2013

We’ve been touch/go fans of the Dawn of the Jedi series since it first debuted as a Dark Horse comic book series.
Into the Void is no comic.
The depth of character and setting development here is extra-ordinary and this is a brilliantly craft tale that doesn’t fit the typical Star Wars novel mold. Yes there are concurrent sets of plots as always, but we get the present and then a past flashback that helps to inform what is going on in the present. It’s a good fit.
What isn’t just a good fit is how this sunovabeeeatch ends. AFter engaging us page after page after page, the ending of this book leaves a lot to be desired. The conclusion is no conclusion and is just a – ok he’s dead move along ending.
This is a story about a brother and a sister, one embracing the force one that rejects it – it’s good fun until the final chapter, which leaves a bitter aftertaste.

Buck Rogers #1
We’ve always been big Buck Rogers fans here..
We loved the 80’s Gil Gerrard Buck too..
and the recent Dynamite Buck Rogers series – was interesting – artistically but the stories were downright stoopid.
Now along comes Hermes Press, a comic book publisher we’ve never heard off before and they have wowed us with something that is authentic, something that is real and is entertaining.
Yeaah we like and Yeaaah we’ll be looking to buy the second issue of this series too.
Elysium is Good Fun – But It’s No District 9 August 20, 2013

Elysium
Yes we really liked District 9 – (who didn’t right?)
So we had some really high hopes for Elysium. As it turns out Elysium is a good/not great film.
The basic story lacks the ‘twist’ that District 9 has, but it is a solid complete story, with a beginning, middle and a (somewhat cheesy) ending.
Special effects are solid as is the acting.
Our fav character has got to be Kruger – the crazy South African – seriously the dude has a whole blown into head, but apparently his brain is still there, so his whole skull can be reconstructed – how crazy cool is that?

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again.
Dennis Wheatly is the finest artist in Star Wars comicdom today.
He’s been associated with Dark Times since the beginning (this is what the 7th number one issue in this series?) and each time we’re blown away.
Other Dark Horse artists are good, but Wheatly is the best.
Beyond that Randy Stradley as the author? You gotta be kidding me it’s the ultimate super-powered duo team up.
This story is riveting – Jennir is still struggling to come to terms with reality and his new life/love while Bomo and the crew are moving forward now aiming at striking back at Vader.
The hunted become the hunters.
How cool is that?
Oh and does anyone want to bet that Ember won’t make it out of this series alive?

The new Dark Horse ‘Star Wars’ series is awesome.
It was awesome for it’s first six issues an the seventh just proves this title has legs…
We get a different view of Vader…one who plots his own path from the Emperor (not all that unlike Force Unleashed come to think of it…). One who chooses his own person to lead the construction of the Death Star.
We don’t quite yet understand what role Birra Seah is set to play in this whole opera..but she’s an interesting Vader lackey isn’t she?
Also totally amazing to see Luke return to Tatooine to visit the Skywalker homestead…in a return home that is very different then when his father returned….

No it’s not quite the director’s cut – but it’s still quite fun.
1A4 Studio has put together a ‘speedrun’ lineart version of Blade Runner that is just amazing fun to watch.
oh and if you haven’t seen this one before – this is the same group that did an amazing 60 second version of Star Wars too:

Tron
Time sure does fly.
It was 31 years ago today that Tron first hit the movie theaters.
No we didn’t see it on opening day – but we were there opening weekend.
We owned the Intellivision-Intelli voice Tron games
and yeaah
We LOVED all things Tron.
That first Tron move made sense. A human inside the machine fighting the MCP …no Clue here…
Tron Legacy looked better than that first movie – for sure..but the story just isn’t nearly as good.
Tron’s legacy for a myriad of reasons didn’t do so well 31 years ago. Today the latest Tron Uprising show (which is awesome) hasn’t been renewed and the minor Tron renewal that Tron Legacy might have spawned seems to have died.

Been a little busy – so a little behind on reviews…
Man of Steel is the best Superman movie since Superman II – and yeah we know it’s not saying much. Yeah we like the basic story and sure we like the actors too.
The problem with Man of Steel is the action.
That’s right the action.
When Superman destroys the world maker and zod’s ship that should’ve been the end of it. Instead we get Zod kneeling before Kal-el and extended fight seen which was quite frankly overdone and boring. The ending with Clark joining the Daily Planet was kinda cutesy too.

YES we HAVE been very EXCITED about the new Man of Steel for months.
With the big release a little more than a week away, we’re even more excited than ever – thanks in part to a new 13 minute Behind The Scenes feature.
Long story short – no red underwear – cuase the S is not for Super it’s a symbol of hope and FFS who wears their underwear outside their pants?

We weren’t expecting much from Star Trek Into Darkness..
No we didn’t like J J Abrams first Star Trek movie…but Into Darkness..
Not too shabby.
First off..
KLINGONS!!
Yes we get a new era of Klingons in this pic (include super-cool new headgear).
We get Klingon speaking Uhura and Klingons speaking Klingon on Kronos itself.
No classic era Birds of Prey, but a sleek new type of scout ship that looks really cool.
OK next up.
KHAN.
No we didn’t expect to see him either, John Harrison is Khan – who knew? No this isn’t a Ricardo Montoblan Khan, but still a devious Mofo and an excellent villain.
The line by line recitation in this movie from Star Trek II Wrath of Khan – inverted with Kirk getting irradiated and Spock getting the call from Scotty that he needs to come down to Engineering right away…WAS SHEER BRILLIANCE.
Spock screaming out Khan!!! was neat, though a bit mis-placed. In Wrath of Khan, Kirk yells out Khan when he is trapped on the planet beneath Regulla One.
TRIBLES.
Another amazeballs twist, J J went all out to give classic fans things to love. Tribles saved by Khan blood save Kirk.
Overall a fun movie, not a pure classic like Wrath of Khan was/is but vastly better than the first J J Abrams Trek and absolutely an entertaining move that we are likely to see more than once.
Buckaroo Banzai Sequel?! Buckaroo Banzai Against the World Crime League April 25, 2013

Remember Backaroo Banzai? yeah that one..with Peter Weller.
At the end of the credits we were promised a Sequel and now nearly 30 years later the director of the original flick is still giving us hope.
In an interview with moviefone director W.D. Richter –
I believe MGM owns the theatrical rights. The other big insanity for ‘Buckaroo’ is that the paper trail for the rights is almost impossible to follow. Warner Bros. wants to do an adult animated version of ‘Buckaroo.’ PolyGram sold it to MGM as a big bundle — all these films move around. And then, finally, you’re sitting at a studio that you found out purchased part of someone’s library and they are reluctant to do anything with the title because they don’t know for a fact that David Begleman, who was a notorious double dealer, might not have sold the international rights in perpetuity to some guy in Bangkok.
