“Geeks are the new cool,” said Teri Weinberg, NBC Entertainment’s executive vice president. “We are all gravitating towards the underdog.”

According to a story over on Wired, so called ‘Geek’ shows make up roughly 20 percent of the major networks’ new prime-time programming for the 2007-08 season .

Among the big shows are:The Big Bang Theory, The Sarah Connor Chronicles and a retooled Bionic Woman. Then of course there is ‘Heroes’ (premiering tonight), Journeyman (also on tonight) and all shlock on SciFi channel including Battlestar Galactica, Flash Gordon, Stargate Atlantis and others..

The Wired article calls it a coming of age for Geek culture – I disagree.

First of all Geek doesn’t necessarily equal SciFi (though it often does) and if the big tired brains at Wired think that every show that has a computer in it is a ‘Geek’ show then woohoo welcome to the new millennium.

The failure of Battlestar Galactica (arguably the best SciFi show out there today) to get a proper timeslot is proof positive that the major networks especially NBC Universal really haven’t got a clue at all.

If ‘Geek’ SciFi culture were truly to take over we should see BSG in the prime time NBC lineup, we’d see Stargate Atlantis there too and Stargate SG-1 would never have been cancelled (though we are looking forward to the movies and Amanda Tapping in season 4 of Atlantis).

‘Geek’ SciFi culture hasn’t truly commanded mainstream TV since the glory days when Star Trek The Next Generation and Deep Space 9 were both on at the same time.

Where is FOX now? Sure they’ve got Sarah Conner Chronicles coming – and we all have high hopes for that – but let’s now forget that FOX is the network that killed Firefly.

wow.

As a fan of the Family Guy and Star Wars it was just AWESOME to see Star Wars done in the Family Guy animation style (officially known as Blue Harvest). Lots of great site gags and rye humor and unfortunately a lot of duds too…

On the plus side:

Jumping to hyperspace outsite of Tatooine when Han (Peter) says Hyperspace always looks so freaky and we get the regular lightspeed jump and then DR WHO!! complete with Who soundtrack and the ultimate Doctor Tom Baker.

Also really great when they get to detention block AA23 and Han takes the mike and says…”slight weapons malfunction..we’re all fine here how are you?” and then we get a whole converstation.

Luke entering the princesses cell and her saying .” who are you aren’t a little fat for a stormtrooper.” And luke saying ..”..you stuckup Bitch!”

Han (Peter) in the shooting pod humming along the John Williams music was also classic..

AND to top it all off the end where they take shots at the Robot Chicken version of Star Wars.

So yes this was a Family Guy show for the ages..but no not the best Star Wars parody ever, Stuey as Vader was VERY VERY weak which was a tremendous dis-appointment and all in all there have been other...funnier standalone Star Wars parody moments in Family Guy

The answer to the question of how much a Star Trek Starfleet is worth is an easy one to answer – namely it depends on what someone is willing to pay.

As we blogged about last week, there was a unique auction on eBay last week with an offer of 7 Star Trek Starfleet vessels.

Classic Star Trek U.S.S. Enterprise

Star Trek: Generations U.S.S. Enterprise-B

Star Trek: U.S.S. Enterprise-D

Star Trek: Insurrection U.S.S. Enterprise-E

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Space Station DS9

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine U.S.S. Defiant

Star Trek: Voyager U.S.S. Voyager

I would have expected this awesome set to go for $300+ considering that either the Voyager or Defiant models on their own typically fetch $100+.

So the final winning bid? Only $122.50!!!
***update** now that that auction is over 90 Days old eBay has removed the old listing. But you can still find lots of ships.. Check out all the Star Trek ship auctions.

Or if you’re into RSS here’s an RSS/XML link to subscribe too that will keep the latest auction listings for you.

(and yes we’re very very very jealous)
