The new Battlestar Galactica diverges from the original in a very long list of ways. Among them is the fact that the original included the boy Boxey and his robot dog the Dagit. The original pilot of the new Battlestar Galactica actually had Boxey in it ..but we have seen him since.

Thank the Lords of Cobol for books.

In Sagittarius is bleeding Boxey is back.

The book in an excellent read and actually a MUST READ for all Battlestar Galactica fans. The show rocks, and so does this book. It expands an area of the show that wasn’t done on the TV show and it adds an incredible chapter to the BG saga.

Beyond just Boxey, President Roslyn actaully can see Baltar’s hallucination of Six in this book..which is really cool. I mean what the frak is up with those hallucinations anyways? is she real? a chip?

Oh and Boxey – bad news he may be a cylon. Too bad we’ll likely never see him again on the TV show itself but for now the book is a solid subsititue.

Lucasfilm Ltd. Wins Case Against Illegal Lightsabers

Barred From Using Star Wars Trademarks, Maryland Company Agrees to $250,000 Judgment for Infringements

SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–In a court-approved settlement, William Osburn and his Maryland-based company, High-Tech Magic, have agreed to a $250,000 judgment in Lucasfilm Ltd.s favor for illegally using Star Wars trademarks to manufacture and sell lightsaber replicas.

U.S. District Judge Ronald M. Whyte of the Northern District of California, San Jose Division, permanently barred Osburn and High-Tech Magic from using the trademarks and required that the company not sell any facsimile of a lighted or glowing sword … and/or parts designed to enable others to build the infringing lightsabers.

Lucasfilm is very serious about protecting its intellectual property rights, said Howard Roffman, President of Lucas Licensing. We will diligently pursue companies like High-Tech Magic that try to make a profit by infringing our rights.

Roffman said Lucasfilm will continue to monitor the activities of High-Tech Magic, and that it is investigating other prop-replica companies that are infringing on Lucasfilms trademarks and copyrights. The company will file additional legal actions against infringers as necessary.

As in previous cases, Roffman emphasized that fans who are simply showcasing their enthusiasm for Star Wars are not at risk. Our goal is to go after and shut down businesses that are trying to make a profit off of creations and properties that do not belong to them, he said.

Lucasfilm, the Lucasfilm logo, STAR WARS, lightsaber and related properties are trademarks and/or copyrights, in the United States and other countries, of Lucasfilm Ltd. and/or its affiliates. Regular readers of ShowMeSciFi have (hopefully) read my reviews of Star Wars Legacy of the Force books in which Jacen Solo (son of Han and Leia) is turning to the dark side.

Lucasfilm has been running a contest to help them decide what Jacen’s Sith name will be and they’ve now revealed their short list of names.

The finalist names are:

Darth Acheron (a river in Hell for those who deny justice),

Darth Caedus (a battle of darkness),

Darth Judicar (the final judge),

Darth Paxis (bringer of peace)

and Darth Taral (ancient Sith for “he who protects”).

Personally i’m voting for Darth Taral. Cast your vote at starwars.com

South Park’s Buck Rogers (aka: Cartman) January 23, 2007

One of the great SciFi shows of the 80’s (or not so great from today’s perspective) had to be Buck Rogers with Gil Gerard. Evidently South Park’s creators felt the same way and created an ‘homage’ to Buck Rogers in a recent two part episode where Cartman gets frozen and thenrescued 500 years into the future.

What I didn’t realize until I saw the video linked below was just how closely South Park matched up to the original Buck Rogers intro. The vid shows the two intros side by side, starting with the Buck Rogers audio, it then repeats with the South Park audio. You gotta see this…awwwweesome!

NO I’M not 100% sure..but i just watched the first episode of the second half of season 3 (episode title “Rapture”)…which was a fine episode btw…and now Lucy Lawless’ cylon (D’eanna) has seen the final five cylons (before she gets whacked).

She nods and apologizes to one of them as though she has done them wrong – at first i though it must have been president roslyn but after seeing the last 5 minutes when Kara Thrace (Starbuck) apparently had visions of the eye of jupiter her whole life…well…nuff said she’s a cylon.

Doesn’t anyone wonder why she’s the ONLY ONE who can fly the cylon raider?

Doesn’t it seem like she can kick a litle more ass than she should be able to?

She’s the best pilot AND sniper,

Cylons seem to know an awful lot about her, almost as if maybe they actually made up all her memories and know about it.

Why was she seperated from the other baby machines in the farm episode?

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #11

A new two-part story begins as fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick and the crew of the Last Resort devise a plan to nab some much needed cash. On the banking world of Telerath they set their plot into motion unaware the bounty on their heads is about to catch up to them. Yet there’s more going on than the schemers or their hunters realize, and when it all blows sky-high an unexpected reunion will throw Zayne’s life on the run into question.

SPOILER ALERT BELOW:

Alright the first story arcs were pretty cool and now we’re setup for 2 issue story arc which is coool since it’s not too stretch out.

Wanna take a guess at what the ‘unexpected’ reunion is? Come on..take a guess….

Alright i’ll just come out and tell ya. It’s Zayne’s dad, but we don’t get to that until the last page.

A bit of a waste but hey it kind of does leave you wanting for more…I for one can hardly wait to read issue #12!

Movies Coming Soon!

Studio Continues Record Breaking Franchise by Releasing Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) announced today the extension of the hit Stargate SG-1 franchise with two movies based on the popular series. Titled Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum, the movies will both be made available to the television universe and home entertainment marketplace by MGM. The announcement was made by Charles Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President, MGM.

“`Stargate SG-1′ is to MGM Television what the James Bond, Pink Panther and the Rocky franchises are to our feature film unit,” said Cohen. “We are committed to continuing to release new SG-1 content and its `Stargate Atlantis’ spin-off, and we’re also steadfast in our dedication to extending the franchise. Stargate is an indelible brand for MGM and we will support it well into the future.”

With its high quality production values, long-term stability in the show’s leadership and strong chemistry between the lead actors in the series, all of whom have big audience appeal, Stargate SG-1 is the longest-running science-fiction series in U.S. TV history. The series has a strong worldwide fan base and can be seen in over 120 countries. Stargate SG-1 cast members Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Claudia Black and Michael Shanks are confirmed to star in both movies. Written and produced by Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, the new movies will feature the latest visual and sound effects, providing viewers with a theatrical movie-going experience.

In the first movie, Stargate: The Ark of Truth will bring a conclusion to the primary storyline of the past two seasons of the SG-1 television series. More thrills and action-packed scenes are planned for this special event movie, which will be directed by Cooper. The suspense will end as fans will see the conclusion of the epic Ori saga.

In the second movie, Stargate: Continuum the SG-1 team is now free to embark on new and exciting adventures throughout the endless Stargate universe.

Below are the synopses for the new Stargate movies:

“Stargate: The Ark of Truth”

As SG-1 searches for an Ancient artifact which they hope can defeat the armies of the Ori, they learn more Ori ships are about to be sent through the supergate to launch a final assault on Earth. Daniel discovers that the artifact, the Ark of Truth, may be in the Ori home galaxy, and SG-1 embarks aboard the Odyssey to find it, and pre-empt the attack. The IOA has a plan of their own and SG-1 ends up in a distant galaxy fighting two powerful enemies.

“Stargate: Continuum”

While SG-1 attends the execution of Ba’al, the last of the goa’uld system lords, Teal’c and Vala inexplicably disappear into thin air. Carter, Daniel and Mitchell race back to a world where history has been changed: the Stargate program has been erased from the timeline. As they try to convince the authorities what’s happened, a fleet of goa’uld motherships arrives in orbit, led by Ba’al, his queen, Katesh, (Vala) and his first prime, Teal’c. SG-1 must find the Stargate and set things right before the world is enslaved by the goa’uld.

The Star Wars Legacy of the Force series is shaping up to be one of the best (if not THE BEST) Star Wars series ever.
So far there have been three previous Star Wars Legacy of the Force books (Betrayal , Bloodlines and Tempest), which i’ve enjoyed enormously (and as my blog reviews will attest).

Exile is written by Aaron Allston who is the same author that wrote the first Star Wars Legacy of the Force book, Betrayal. What a wild ride it’s been since that first book.

At the end of Tempest Han and Leia Solo were on the run from ..of all people..their son Jacen Solo who is the second coming of Darth Vader, flying his own Galactic Alliance Star Destroyer named the Anakin Solo (who was a son of Han and Leia but now deceased).

The cover of Star War Legacy of the Force : Exile kinda gives it away, Han and Leia are on the run…the book isn’t out on the shelves (or by pre-order from amazon) until February 28th. I can hardly wait!! (but once i get it and finish it, check back here for my review).

With Battlestar Galactica on hiatus for another week, I felt the urgent need to get a fix and found… A Fan Fiction Contest.

Guess what? It’s not too late to enter yet either. The deadline is Feb 28 @ midnight.

The contest? Lee Adama Is A Cylon. (as if..since that would mean that the ‘old man’ is a cylon too..or maybe somehow the Cylon cloned the real Apollo….).

Full contest rules can be found here.

I plan on writing a brief piece i’ll be sure to post it here when I do.

StarGate SG:1 lost its first doctor and apparently Stargate Atlantis is set to loose its first Doctor too.

And just like Stargate SG1 that replaced their Doctor with a fan favorite from another sci fi show (Andromeda). Atlantis is getting one too, but this time actress Jewel Staite from Firefly

Paul McGillion will no longer be a regular cast member, with his character Dr. Carson Beckett departing in the second half of Season Three. If you want to try and save him check out SaveCarsonBeckett.com .

Eclipse Magazine has the full interview with Paul McGillion.

William Shatner revealed to SCI FI Wire that the upcoming 11th Star Trek movie will indeed, as rumored, deal with the early years of Capt. James T. Kirk and Spock—and that he will definitely appear in the movie if director J.J. Abrams can find a place to use him. Shatner, who originated the role of Kirk in the original Trek series and several subsequent films, said in an interview that he was invited to meet with Abrams (Mission: Impossible III), who is also co-writing the movie.

“I met with J.J., and they told me they would like me to be part of their film, but they have to write the role,” Shatner said in an interview.

Everyone knows the Imperial March. But no one has ever seen the Empire actually performing the music as an orchestral piece, at least not in any of the six movies.

Thankfully with the help of a little bit of lego and some nifty animation that oversight has now been corrected. The first time i saw this vid i was totally blown away by how professional it comes off.

Just saw this story . Apparently the set of Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope is actually now home to local (albeit very poor) Tunisians.

So even though Anakin,Luke and Lucas left Tatooine , Tatooine (nee Tunisia) still exists. Don’t know about you but if I could, i’d book a night. Imagine…staying in the same ‘home’ as Luke (yes I know it was Mark Hammel but still)..wouldn’t that be cool?

Then again considering that the set is more than 30 years old and in the middle of a desert, i suspect that Luke’s home is anything but ‘cool’.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi – The Fall of the Sith Empire

The Sith Empire has rallied its forces for an all-out battle for control of the galaxy. Its goal: Crush the Republic. And with so many Sith Masters among them, the goal is not unachievable. As Naga Sadow readies his fleet to attack, one lone person threatens to undermine the entire campaign — Jori

This the concluding book to the epic begun in The Golden Age of the Sith. The Fall of the Sith Empire is rapid rate story. Jori makes it back, the Sith follow with an all out attack that ultimately ends in the fall of the Sith Empire. Little (or no) intrigue, plot or character development. It’s just good basic Sith on Jedi fun.

The Sith decide to take on the Republic and fail.

I can’t imagine any Star Wars fan not wanting to own this book, though not brilliant it does describe a critical era in the Expanded Star Wars Universe history.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi – The Golden Age of the Sith TPB

Marka Ragnos ruled the galaxy with an iron fist. He was the Dark Lord of the Sith — the most powerful of the most powerful. But now he is dead. And two innocent hyperspace explorers, Gav and Jori Daragon, may follow suit if they get caught between the factions fighting to fill the Dark Lord void….

Ever since i first heard the word ‘Sith’ i’ve been curious about the what these great enemies of the Jedi are all about. Sure i’ve seen all six movies a gazillion times and sure i’ve read every paperback and hardcover in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. But my knowledge of the Star Wars Expanded Universe in Comic Books has lagged.

That’s why i picked up The Golden Age of the Sith. It’s a story that takes place in the ancient history of the Star Wars Universe and it’s a must read for anyone that claims to be a Star Wars fan.

No it’s not brilliant literature

No it’s not the most awesome artwork I’ve ever seen either.

But damn yes it’s pure Star Wars magic. The Golden Age of the Sith has got all the ingredients of swashbuckling tale worthy of praise from George Lucas.

Star Wars: Crimson Empire – Council of Blood TPB

Following the death of Imperial Guard turncoat Carnor Jax at the hand of the last Guard, Kir Kanos, the Galactic Empire suddenly finds itself devoid of a leader, and an Interim Council is assembled to rule the Empire until a new Emperor can be selected.

Crimson Empire II fills in an interesting gap in the Star Wars cannon following the destruction of the second Death Star orbiting above the forest moon of Endor.

Crimson Empire II is a riveting read, I enjoyed ever page of plot development and story. The artwork isn’t the best I’ve ever seen in a Star Wars comic but it’s not terrible either.

The cheesy ending where Kir Kanos continues to pledge his loyalty to an Empire that no longer really exist is a bit lame but i suppose it leaves the door open to Crimson Empire III if such a book will ever occur.

I totally recommend this book and I suggest that anyone that has interest in the early days of the New Republic will as well.

Star Wars: Tag & Bink Were Here TPB|

The infamous exploits of this hapless Rebel pair are now collected in one single, attractive, and highly portable volume! Officers Tag Greenley and Bink Otauna were minding their own business aboard a familiar, princess-harboring freighter when they suddenly found themselves under siege.

When i picked this book up i was half expected a Star Wars take on the Shakespeare knockoff, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead, and that’s mostly what I got.

Though to be fair, Tag & Bink are dimwits and their adventures just don’t seem to have the same resonance as Rosencrantz & Guildenstern. Tag & Bink die at a few different point and then somehow are re-written back into the story, it’s a bit lame.

All is all the trade paperback is a ‘fun’ if not simple read. Don’t expect great literature or a major new piece of the Star Wars canon with this one. Do expect some satire, some cutesyness and laissez faire romp through the Star Wars movies with the dimwits, Tag and Bink.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, along comes Star Wars Legacy of the Force :Tempest. This is the third in the series and to say the least, the plot has thickened…alot. Jacen Solo is real bad ass in this one and there is no mistaking his walk on the dark side now. Cover to cover this book was an awesome read full of twists and plot complications that commanded me (no Jedi mind trick required) to keep turning the page.
