In Search of Babylon 5 : The Lost Tales – Why Isn’t it being more widely promoted? August 13, 2007

Babylon 5 Fans!! Be afraid. If my recent attempts at trying to see who is selling the new direct to DVD movie – Babylon 5 The Lost Tales is any indication , we’ve got trouble.

The DVD has been out for over a week and in that time i’ve tried to locate it at stores in Toronto, Buffalo and San Francisco with little luck (yes i travel alot).

Best Buy stores in Toronto did not have any kind of special display and didn’t even have it on their new releases shelf. In fact i went to three different Best Buys and all of them said they never even got the movie.

Target in Buffalo didn’t have Lost Tales either.

In San Francisco, I went to the Virgin Megastore off 4th and could not find the DVD. After going to the counter to ask, they said they had 50 copies. None of which were on the shelf. Again the DVD was not on the new releases shelf and was not being promoted.

If Babylon 5 The Lost Tales is not adequately promoted at retail how does Warner Bros or JMS expect for it to be successful?

Is Amazon enough?

Currently Amazon.com has Lost Tales listed as #12 on its Top DVD listing. Personally i think that Amazon is a great outlet but its not enough. And if JMS is wondering why Lost Tales isn’t selling more all he needs to do is walk into his local DVD retailer to try and find the movie.

Things From Another World – San Francisco $0.24 for bag and board August 9, 2007

Been in San Francisco this whole week for intensive work and ended up going to Things From Another World (metreon location) on Wednesday for my comic book fix (and Star Wars Legacy #15 of course).

NO BAG AND BOARD for free here either (like MidTown Comics in New York, Graham Crackers in Chicago and Silver Snail Toronto). However at checkout they do give you the option of buying the bag and board for 24 cents.

Also word of warning…i was at the store at noon on new comics wednesday and guess what?

THEY REFUSED TO SELL ME LEGACY #15!! Apparently they hadn’t checked in their new books so they couldn’t sell them. So i had to make a separate trip later that day.

Star Wars Empire Volume 1 -(old but still great) August 9, 2007

I purchased Star Wars Empire Volume 1 some time ago from TFAW’s 50% off offer and finally got the chance to read it on a flight to San Francisco.

Though there is nothing wrong with reading a series issue by issue the experience of reading a complete story arc in one trade paperback volume is very satisfying.

I missed alot of the Empire series when it was first out – so the trades give me an opportunity to catch up and see what i missed.

Empire Volume 1 is a basic conspiracy story pitting Imperial agents against Vader and Palapatine. We all know who will emerge victorious but its still a fun and solid read.

OMFG! It’s already on other sources but here you go..after months of debate we now know who Darth Krayt is..

A’SHARAD HETT

Congratulations to those of you who guessed this one correctly. It has been a wonderful discussion with over 350 comments posted.

Just like with the Star Wars Legacy of the Force Sacrifice book with Darth Caedus, Darth Krayt’s identity is not revealed until the very last page.

I’m going to read this issue again before commenting on the whole thing ..Star Wars Legacy has been an awesome series to this point but this THIS THIS ISSUE IS THE BEST STAR WARS COMIC ISSUE OF ALL TIME (perhaps).

Who is Hett you ask?

Well luckily we here at ShowMeSciFi not that long ago reviewed the trade paperback where Hett is found on Tatooine. It’s called Outlander and its an awesome read. And its awesome that John Ostrander has brought him back.

Flash Gordon Set To Air This Friday! But is SciFi ready?? August 6, 2007

After many many months of talking about it here on ShowMeSciFi – Flash Gordon is ALMOST finally here – but is SciFi ready ?

The show is set to air this friday on SciFi channel and they’ve finally got a show portal up on the SciFi.com site for Flash Gordon. Unfortunately there is no episode listing (like stargate and other shows) so we don’t even know the name of the first episode officially yet.

We know that 22 episode were ordered but the portal gives no indication of anything other than the fact of who the cast members are and what the basic premise of the show is.

Overall it makes me wonder whether this show was rushed and if SciFi is actually ready for its launch. The promo’s and early teaser are o.k but there is only one of them. How can you expect a show to be succesful when you don’t promote it or properly support it ?

wow.

Since the first hardcover edition in the 30th anniversary series we’ve seen the BEST that the expanded universe has to offer. I’ve been buying these since the first one and i just got Endgame (Volume 6) this weekend (haven’t read it yet).

I didn’t get these issues (the ones included in this hardcover collection) at the first go-around and getting some of these stories in the trade paperback has been challenging. My local selling luckily still had on for me when i came in (thnx). Long story short (and full review to come). The last days of the Jedi before Palapatine’s empire in stunning detail. The paper and construction of this book is FANTASTIC, it’s rare that anyone raves about the construction of a comic but the way that Dark Horse has put this hardcovers together is nothing short of amazing.

Witness the untold stories of the Jedi who took a last stand against Emperor Palpatine in the moments during, and immediately after, the events in Revenge of the Sith!

Quinlan Vos wages a battle of impossible odds against his own troops to protect his loved ones, Jedi Master Kai Huddora takes a terrified Padawan into his charge after her own master falls to Order 66, Dass Jennir finds himself in league with a band of rebels he’d led attacks against only days before, and a brave few Jedi will plot to topple Sith rule-by setting a trap for the newly unveiled Darth Vader!

THE END?

After seven issues Roland finally becomes the Gunslinger.

This issue is all about action cover to cover; glorious art cover to cover and may well be the best issue of the 7 issue set.

Finally Roland’s Ka-tet takes action. Finally they shoot their guns..and as we all knew would happen poor Susan Delgado meets her unfortunate end. This is the issue that we have been waiting for since the series first started. The art in his series has always been spectacular in this issue it gets kicked up a notch.

Though it is Peter David and not Stephen King himself who writes this tale the prose reeks of Kings melancholy; sheer brilliance and a must read for fans of the English language.

This is not the end though…Marvel has decided to continue the prequel in February; so more visual brilliance is yet to come.

I find myself in Las Vegas this week (again). When in Vegas i always visit the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton – i dunno i guess it’s the only ‘geeky’ scifi attraction that speaks to me so it’s the only thing i visit repeatedly.

This time I actually ate and drank there too. That is at the recreation of Quark’s bar from the DS9 promenade. It’s an experience that i hope all star trek fans get to have at least once.

No regular ales here…only Romulan.

NO Klingon Blood wine – but there was a Klingon Blood Draft – a red beer that was quite tasty.

No sports nonesense on the screens..only Trek episodes and..BONUS real fans behind the counter. The bartender and I had a solid discussion on the merits of the last episode of Star Trek Enterprise.

The dude also whipped out his iPod on which he had the remastered version of Star Trek classic and let me watch an episode on it.

Drink dispensing isn’t normal either. Though not quite a replicate – with a flash strobe light the effect is ..well ‘materializing’.

The menu is loaded with Star Trek themed materials too – this time i had the Rings of Betazed – can you guess what that is?…

Onion Rings.

Check out the menu for yourself.
