Defying Gravity – who is Beta? August 3, 2009

We’re going to make an early prediction – Defying Gravity- the new ABC sciFi show is going to make it.

The pilot episode(s) were exceptionally well written with awesome pacing and the right mix of flashbacks, forward movement and plot conspiracies.

The biggest mystery now is – who or what is Beta? and where is Antares actually going? It isn’t just on its way to Venus now is it?

Clearly Beta is some kind of sentient alien presence and it’s got some kind of payload on Antares itself (in pod 54). What that payload is – we don’t know, but I suspect it’s something that is so dangerous that it’s unlikely that the crew of Antares will ever make it back to earth.

If you missed the episode on Sunday night – Amazon has got both parts of the pilot avail online now (for Free!). Pilot – Part 2

There is no way in hell that this will have a second season.
Why continue to produce this expensive mediocre show, when a cheap reality show would likely get much better ratings?

because reality show is the lowest common denominator….

True, i think that they are going to tell the crew about the Beta after or at Venus because it will be to late for them to turn back. And what is the deal with the Beta turning everyone into the same person?

[…] Where/what is Beta? We still don’t know and at this point I’m not sure if we care anymore either. At this stage it’s unlikely this show will last until the end of the year before ABC pulls the plug on this disaster. […]

Defying Gravity is like the movie Sphere. Instead of being under water they are in space and the Sphere is called Beta.

I like defying gravity. It is a very approachable human sci-fi though mostly a drama has many characteristics of great sci-fi. I think the stories are interesting and well paced. Not too many mysteries introduces like lost and pack for of intense situations. Keep up the good work!

This is a guess … Beta is an alien from Venus whose UFO crashed on Earth and they are returning him (it) to Venus. However, two more episodes were filmed that ABC is not showing in the US, however they will be shown in Canada, so presumably we will find out.

Defying Gravity is a nice break to all the reality TV and CSI shows. It seems to be written well and keeps my mind thinking about what is going to happen next. Cant wait to see the next episode. Any one know when it will air??

The show has been canceled and the problem as I saw it was very simple: boredom. It simply didn’t move at a reasonable pace. Too little action, but then space is basically boring. Too slow to get to the main idea of beta. Apparently the whole show was nothing more than playing hide and seek with beta with no story once it was revealed.

I watched the first five with enthusiasm, then got tired of rehashing old facts. When will writers learn? You can’t capture a sophisticated audience with continuous repetition. There has to be an unfolding story that has something to say, not something to say again and again and again …..
