Babylon 5 The Lost Tales : Voices In The Dark – A New Beginning? or a Pathetic comeback? August 15, 2007

Alrighty I’ve held my tongue long enough on what I actually think about Babylon 5 The Lost Tales : Voices In The Dark.

Babylon 5 is a place of beginnings and endings, Sheridan says in the final five minutes. Whether this will be a new beginning or an ending we don’t know.

First of all these two episodes are hardly the best that Babylon 5 has to offer. In fact they’re down near the bottom.

We had all expected so much from this – the teaser trailer was awesome after all. But from the beginning intro of the actual DVD – no awesome intro music and voice over as we had in the series – (Babylon was our Last Best Hope for Peace…it failed… ) – till the final frame this experience was lacking.

In Something Here – the tale with Lochley and the Devil there are two few characters, too little of the station. Sure the story is good. The deep story on how religion will fare in space and the true meaning of heaven and hell is the type of story that only a master Sci Fi story teller like JMS would ever attempt.

But then again. Babylon 5 has tackled religion in the past. Remember the episode with the Rabbi after Ivana loses a relative?

So..sure dialogue is great and so is the story..but the pace is SLOW. As a regular Babylon 5 episode it would work, but as the first thing we the FANS see after nearly a decade..i dunno i was less than enthusiastic.

OK so ON to the second part.

Sheridan is back

Galen the Technomage is back.

But again..a well thought out well scripted episode in terms of dialogue..but SLOW

NO ACTION.

and oh so slow.

I tried watching this episode with someone that had never watched Babylon 5 before…needless to say this person didn’t last through the whole thing.

And therein lies the problem with Lost Tales. It is too slow and not engaging enough. The stories are long drawn out. The action is only dialogue in slooow sequences. The special effects looked flimsy, the station didn’t look right, the hyperspace gate didn’t look right, the landing bay didn’t look right at all!

Babylon 5 is the greatest Sci Fi series of all time. The original run had the best script, the best characters and the best story arcs.

Lost Tales : Voices In The Dark is a ‘shadow’ of the glory that was Babylon 5. I hope JMS makes another DVD and I hope the next one has more characters, more ships, more aliens and FRAK IT more story, more action and MORE OF THE BABYLON 5 WE ALL MISS SO VERY MUCH.

In Search of Babylon 5 : The Lost Tales – Why Isn’t it being more widely promoted? August 13, 2007

Babylon 5 Fans!! Be afraid. If my recent attempts at trying to see who is selling the new direct to DVD movie – Babylon 5 The Lost Tales is any indication , we’ve got trouble.

The DVD has been out for over a week and in that time i’ve tried to locate it at stores in Toronto, Buffalo and San Francisco with little luck (yes i travel alot).

Best Buy stores in Toronto did not have any kind of special display and didn’t even have it on their new releases shelf. In fact i went to three different Best Buys and all of them said they never even got the movie.

Target in Buffalo didn’t have Lost Tales either.

In San Francisco, I went to the Virgin Megastore off 4th and could not find the DVD. After going to the counter to ask, they said they had 50 copies. None of which were on the shelf. Again the DVD was not on the new releases shelf and was not being promoted.

If Babylon 5 The Lost Tales is not adequately promoted at retail how does Warner Bros or JMS expect for it to be successful?

Is Amazon enough?

Currently Amazon.com has Lost Tales listed as #12 on its Top DVD listing. Personally i think that Amazon is a great outlet but its not enough. And if JMS is wondering why Lost Tales isn’t selling more all he needs to do is walk into his local DVD retailer to try and find the movie.

Domain Mapping With WordPress – Kiss Your Traffic Goodbye (in the short term) July 31, 2007

It’s been three weeks since we moved from showmescifi.wordpress.com to showmescifi.com – thanks to a WordPress domain mapping feature.

In principal it’s a great idea, a great service and is easily done. We had a small issue for a few hours when we didn’t realize that the existing mail server would no longer work – a friendly wordpress.com support person helped out and now email works (thanks to WordPress and Google Apps).

The only REAL problem for ShowMeSciFi is that since we’ve moved, traffic has been cut by nearly two thirds.

Why is that?

I’d speculate a number of things..i think we lost alot of our Google/Technorati juice for one.

Google and Technorati now treat us like a new site almost – with no history of authority and links.

It’s really quite unfortunate that such a great service can have such a negative affect on readership.

That said – we’re committed to building ShowMeSciFi and continuing to populate with the stuff that SciFi fans care about. Thanks for being part of the journey.

FINALLY!!!

It’s out – the much anticipated new Babylon 5 movie – Babylon 5 The Lost Tales – and man does it look AWESOME.

I have yet to watch the whole thing (yet). In this slow scifi season truth is i’m starved for SciFi so i’m going to savor this masterpiece on Friday then again on Saturday.

The real test for this movie is not how awesome it is – but rather how well it does in sales.

I believe that the straight to DVD model works and is the salvation for great SciFi. No network wanted to back JMS and no studio would finance a wide theatre release – but who need that?

We’ve all got good screens and what would we rather have – great SciFi  or shlock on a big screen?

Here’s hoping this is a massive success and spawns a whole series of straight to DVD Babylon 5 movies.

July 31st can’t come soon enough.

Babylon 5: Lost Tales is just under 6 weeks away from release and i’m already stoked.

We already know the basic outlines of the story..but i’ve finally now seen the DVD trailer and it’s AWESOME.

Sheridan doesn’t look any older – than again they aged him at times in the original run of the series.

We can only hope that the success of Lost Tales leads to another DVD, or maybe a whole straight to DVD series.

Here’s the trailer to get you going..

ShowMeSciFi has written before about Babylon 5 The Lost Tales.

It is one most anticipated SciFi releases of the year and finally FINALLY brings back one of the greatest (if not the greatest) SciFi TV franchise of all time in a direct to DVD movie.

The DVD has a running time of 75 minutes. Basic timeline is that it’s the tenth anniversary of the Interstellar Alliance, and President Sheridan is on his way to Babylon 5 for the celebration.

Officially Babylon 5: The Lost Tales” will be released on July 31, 2007 but Amazon.com already is doing pre-orders.

Apparently it’s already in HUGE demand. Babylon 5 The Lost Tales is already the number 6 bestseller on Amazon’s DVD list.

It’ll be interesting to see just how popular this DVD becomes before its release.

Babylon 5 Lost Tales – How Fans Literally Saved The New Show March 12, 2007

The original Babylon 5 Series is one of the best (if not the best) SciFi series of all time.

After nearly a decade in which we have seen no main story B5 shows or movies..it’s finally coming back, thanks in no small part to the efforts of fans like you and me.

Apparently alot was lost by Warner Bros after the original series completed its on air run.

Ironically, it was the fan base that came to the rescue.
J. Michael Straczynski creator and writer of the B5 franchise found this twist ironic.

In a recent interview he said:

“We created the show initially, then the fans created their version, then we had to go to the fans to make the show again.” Full circle.

But what about the story?

Well for one this isn’t the ill fated B5 Crusade which was never properly finished. Though the Technomage Galen does make an appearance.

In segment one, Sheridan is en route to Babylon 5 for the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Interstellar Alliance, when he picks up an unexpected guest, and segment two follows Lochley on Babylon 5 preparing for Sheridan’s arrival. Each runs about 35 minutes.

Personally i can hardly wait for Lost Tales. There is no better SciFi scriptwriter alive today then J. Michael Straczynski.
