I found myself in Las Vegas this week and when in Vegas I always visit The Star Trek Experience.
For those of you that aren’t familiar with it, it’s essentially a Star Trek theme ride attraction inside of the Las Vegas Hilton. The highlight are a pair of simulations Borg 4D and Klingon encounter.

The first time you go on either of the simulators is an AWESOME experience – problems is it’s the same simulators year after year and they have haven’t changed in the last 4 years at least. Nothing wrong with that but it would be neat if there could be some kind of refresh maybe even just on the graphic simulations which were state of the art at one time but now appear to somewhat dated.

When visiting the Star Trek Experience you’ve got to visit Garak’s store – they always have something on sale – this year its Klingon Bobble heads – only $9.99..

NASA has just posted a video titled ‘Search for Spocks Home’ on the JPL site.

According to Star Trek canon Vulcan is located orbitting the star we know as 40 Eridani A.

Guess what?

It’s real and NASA’s got a plan to find out what’s out there.

But is it logical?

and will life, Live Long & Prosper there?

Star Trek: Klingons: Blood Will Tell #1 May 2, 2007

I finally got my hands on the first issue of Star Trek Klingons Blood Will Tell … i wimped out and bought the English language version – as opposed to the Klingon version and was laughed at for being a newbie by my ‘friendly’ TARG of a comics retailer.. The story in English at least is quite basic and attempt to chronicle a sort of history of the Klingons just ahead of the peace treaty that Kirk helps get negotiated in Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. Sure i’ll keep buying this series just to see what happens and how they attempt to fill in the blanks..but we all know how it ends up. Klingons and Federation as allies and not heinous enemies. Art in this book is decent here’s a few cells from the Klingon language version. Though it’s in Klingon – the Klingon is transliterated into English. SOOO to prove my warriors mettle..following is a Klingon language translations of this blog post.

Thank God You’re Here – Jason Alexander Star Trek Spoof April 19, 2007

Seinfeld almunus Jason Alexander (George) is well known for his Shatner/Kirk schtick.

In one of the funniest examples yet from him of his Shatner/Kirk talent Alexander was on the new ‘ Thank God You’re Here improv show last week and he really laid it on thick.

Funniest part? Mid-way through when  the crew asks Jason Alexander to start the launch sequence…

 “GIDDY UP YIPEE KAY-yay!! ”

Hey! J.J. Abrams!! (Star Trek Movie producer) how bout casting Jason Alexander in the next movie?

Forget about doodling or using paperclips to clean under your nails (admit it you’ve done it! i know you have!!).

YOU CAN now put those restless clips to good work in defense of the United Federation of Planets.

Star Trek The Next Generation Turns 20 March 12, 2007

It’s hard to believe that it has been 20 years since Star Trek The Next Generation (TNG) first premiered.

I remember very well the first time I saw the first episode (Encounter at Farpoint) thinking man they sure do zoom in alot on that Picard guy, but holy crap Q is cool.

While you can’t argue with the fact that Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan really brought back Star Trek as a franchise.

You similarly simply cannot argue that Star Trek TNG is not responsible for the resurrection of Star Trek on TV. TNG introduced us to androids and klingons on the bridge, a blind ship’s engineer. Q, the Borg, the holodeck. Ferengi and countless other icons that are now staples of the SciFi lexicon.

Two of the best TNG episodes ever are the first episode (Encounter at Farpoint) and the very last one, All Good Things Must Come To An End. It was a show that has held our attention and imaginations for 20 years. It was also the last Star Trek in which Star Trek creator and visionary Gene Roddenberry had a direct hand.

It’s unfortunate that it did come to an end, and now with TNG’s cast no longer in the Star Trek movies it is somewhat sad to think that it has been 20 years since it all began. It is even sadder given the dismal failure that was Star Trek Enterprise and the disaster in progress known as Star Trek XI.

Perhaps  TNG’s writers did have to right in the end as all good things must come to and end.

Star Trek as The Next Generation officially turns 20 the week of September 28, 2007. Starting from March of 2007 Paramount will start to roll out a new 20th Anniversary logo on the StarTrek.com site as well as on licensed Star Trek products .

Star Trek XI – Will Simply Be Called Trek March 10, 2007

Multiple news outlets are confirming that Star Trek XI will be called:

Not Wrath of Kahn (ST 2)

Not Search for Spoke (ST 3)

Not the Voyage Home (ST 4)

Not the Final Frontier (ST 5)

Not the Undiscovered Country (ST6)

Not Generations (ST 7)

Not First Contact (ST 8 )

Not Insurrection (ST 9)

Not Nemesis (ST 10)

BUT JUST PLAINLY – STAR TREK.

How freaking lame is that? HOw lazy are these SOBs putting this movie together?

Apparently no actors have been signed and the screenplay isn’t done yet either. BUT apparently these braniacs already know that they are releasing this ‘generically titled’ Star Trek flik for Xmas 2008.

If the Star Trek franchise were in my hands – i would title Star Trek XI – The Neutral Zone and just have it as all all out battle royale between the Federation, Klingons and Romulans.

Ever wanted to completely remodel your pad into a Star Trek replica?

Well now you can – with the help of what may be the world’s first SciFi interior design firm called 24th Century Design.

His own pad is totally decked out with voice-activated LED lighting throughout, hi-tech HVAC systems and authentic sound effects.

Apparently the dude that runs the firm got the idea to go Trek after his wife left him. Guess that’s probably why he’s living in a bachelor pad.

For more details on this ultimate fanboy interior design firm check out the firm’s site or this awesome interview he recently gave to Electronic House.

One of my fav pics of his pad – the dude even did the can!

SCIFIPEDIA vs. Wikipedia February 23, 2007

SciFi.com is now actively promoting its own SciFi wiki called SciFipedia. It’s an effort to build out a complete ‘encyclopedia’ of SciFi shows, characters, games and other such trivia.

SciFi.com is expecting/hoping that people will freely give up their time and knowledge to help build out the content. Not a bad idea and one that Wikipedia has proven works.

There is a big glaring monstrous problem with it though.

If you look closely at SciFipedia’s pages in particular the Terms of Use it becomes very apparent that Scifipedia is nothing like Wikipedia. First off Scifipedia content is not licensed under any real open content license like Creative Commons or the GNU Free Documentation License. What that means in normal human speak is that you can’t freely use any content from Scifipedia.

USE OF SCIFIPEDIA CONTENT

Except as described in this Terms of Use, you agree not to reproduce, duplicate, copy, create derivative works from, perform, sell, resell or exploit SCIFIPEDIA or any portion of SCIFIPEDIA (including any promotions and advertisements for SCIFIPEDIA) (collectively “SCIFIPEDIA”), without express written permission from SCIFIPEDIA.

Wikipedia is totally different in that the GNU Free Documentation license and Creative Commons licenses are all about letting information be free. Part of the incentive of contribution is knowing that you’re setting information free for any/all to benefit from.

Speaking of contributions, at Wikipedia anyone can contribute at any time. There is no need to register if you don’t want too. I’ve contributed many hundreds of entries to wikipedia and have never once registered.

With Scifipedia you have to register or you can’t contribute.

The policy for SCIFIPEDIA is that only registered members will be allowed to contribute entries. The registration will be handled though the SCIFI.COM main website, and registered SCIFI.COM members need only log in. A name and email address will be required, and you’ll need to follow an authentication procedure to become a registered member.

Bummer.

Then last but perhaps most importantly is the fact that Scifipedia has only 4,710 entries or so. Wikipedia greatly outstrips that already, containing the same and alot more in SciFi than SciFipedia.

So what am I saying?

I’m saying if you’re going to give of your own free time and will to help enrich and educate why not do so in the most free, most collaborative and most used media the world has ever known. Forget about scifipedia – contribute to Wikipedia.

Quaplah! Star Trek Comics – soon to be available in the original Klingon February 8, 2007

Clint Eastwood tells the other side of the Iwo Jima story in Japanese – so why not get the ‘other’ side of the Star Trek Universe in the ‘original’ Klingon?

That’s exactly what’s going to happen this coming April.

IDW Publishing which is the current licensse of Star Wars in comics has announced Star Trek®: Klingons: Blood Will Tell will be available in Klingon (with English subtitles).

While Starfleet personnel of the 24th century view Klingons as their allies, in the Star Trek universe of Captain Kirk’s time, the Klingons were always viewed as being on the wrong side of their struggles with the United Federation of Planets. As a species, they were allegedly responsible for some reprehensible acts (resulting in some classic TV episodes and movies), but were they really in the wrong? Or did they just not have a fair chance to present their side of the story?

With the new series coming out…it might be a good time to catch up on those Klingon language lessons (translations are never accurate).

The YouTube vid below is a funny Daily Show segment with Office star Steve Correll all about Klingon Language lessons. Quaplah!

Star Trek New Frontier : Missing in Action (review) February 6, 2007

missinginaction.jpgCan a new reader jump into an existing series and not get lost?

That’s the question I asked before picking up Star Trek New Frontier : Missing in Action. Though i’ve read my share of other Star Trek books I have not yet read any of the New Frontier books. I thought (somewhat naively) that i could jump in with this one, get up to speed and then maybe pick up the predeccesor books later.

I WAS WRONG.

It is not possible to read Star Trek New Frontier : Missing in Action on its own. I tried and it became so frustrating that I had to give up after reading for an hour and feeling completely lost.

Is it the author’s fault or mine?

The author, Peter David is an excellent author for sure. Heck I’ve read a bookcase full of works by him (most recently Battlestar Galactica: Sagittarius is Bleeding) . Usually he builds in enough back story so even if you read a series out of order, you’re still o.k. Not so with Missing in Action.

The plot even without understanding the characters and the ‘inside’ story since this was my first New Frontier book, (in the bit was able to read before getting lost myself) is pathetically repetitive to what dozens of other Trek books have done with better success.

Save your time and money. Avoid Missing in Action.

Following the dramatic events of After the Fall, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the U.S.S. Excalibur find themselves catapulted headlong into another universe, far from the New Thallonian Protectorate and Sector 221-G…a place where an ancient war rages between two powerful alien races. But Calhoun has no intention of staying here for very long and, adopting the time-honored philosophy of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend,” takes it upon himself to somehow (and by any means necessary) persuade one side or the other to help him and his crew get back home.

Heroes Goes Trekkin With Takei February 2, 2007

I’m not much of a Heroes fan myself, but apparently NBC is trying real hard to get hard core SciFi fans to dig the show. George Takei of Star Trek fame is now on the show and did some kind of press junket yesterday given the number of sites and news outlets that have quotes from him today.

This is one of my favs from all of the coverage that I saw:

The casting choices of Takei and Christopher Eccleston, who played the lead role in Doctor Who during the first season of the new British series, were very clever moves by the show’s producers. Heroes is successfully walking the line between mainstream and hardcore sci fi fans, and the new faces are a sly wink to the latter.

“Here’s this character (Hiro) who is a Star Trek fan, and supposedly saw a younger me on the good ship Enterprise,” Takei said. “And here I am playing his father, so there is a wonderful circle here, that could turn into another, interesting kind of spiral. Heroes is very much like Star Trek in many ways. It’s more fantastical, but it’s contemporary.”

William Shatner revealed to SCI FI Wire that the upcoming 11th Star Trek movie will indeed, as rumored, deal with the early years of Capt. James T. Kirk and Spock—and that he will definitely appear in the movie if director J.J. Abrams can find a place to use him. Shatner, who originated the role of Kirk in the original Trek series and several subsequent films, said in an interview that he was invited to meet with Abrams (Mission: Impossible III), who is also co-writing the movie.

“I met with J.J., and they told me they would like me to be part of their film, but they have to write the role,” Shatner said in an interview.

I don’t think i’ve ever seen a Star Trek game for the PS2 that was any good, until now. Star Trek Encounters isn’t the most graphically intense or strategic game. It is just plain fun.

It took me all of 10 minutes to get into it and I haven’t put the game down since.

Here’s a view vids of the game:

I read and watch alot of Sci Fi stuff. Mostly just on a whim and almost never from a review. I haven’t actually found good review sources that ‘work’ for me.

That’s where this blog comes in.

It’s my take on what’s good, what’s bad, what sucks and what’s aweseome.

Hopefully it’ll help someone else out to figure out what they want to watch or read.
