Like everyone else, we’re eagerly awaiting the arrival of the Star Wars The Old Republic MMO game this year (we hope!).
So we’re gobbling up every little tidbit we can, including the Dark Horse comic book series.
The first story arc of the Old Republic comic, a three issue set titled, “Threat of Peace” has now wrapped up — and we’re not too impressed.
The basic storyline is solid, a Sith/Jedi truce and the various factions, both Sith and Jedi that want to see the truce ended before it really begins.
The problem is that the story as told in this comic is very disjointed and is extremely difficult to follow. Don’t bother trying to read individual issues of this series, they simply don’t make sense. As a complete story arc – that’s a bit better as the single cell (or page) context makes more sense across three issues.
Long story short is that the Jedi themselves were trying to undercut the Sith/Jedi treaty. That part of the story was kiinda cool, but the delivery overall is weak.
The art is also relatively weak in this series and isn’t at the same level that we’re used to from Dark Horse. Perhaps we just have unrealistic expectation for this series, since the LucasArts/BioWare trailers for The Old Republic have been so awesome so far.

Star Wars Blood Ties #1 What is Boba Fett Afraid of? September 7, 2010

First things first – Chris Scalf the artist on this issue – and he truly is an artist – is one of the finest artists in comics today.
With Blood Ties #1 Scalf gives us — the lucky readers – with a visual feast of brilliantly painted artwork that is breathtaking to look at.
The story isn’t too shabby either. Blood Ties is a joint Jango/Boba Fett tale with young Boba learning lessons from his Dad – that somehow also connect to the future when Boba is his own feared bounty hunter.
Great fun and a really enjoyable experience for all Star Wars fans.

Legion of Superheroes #4 Review September 6, 2010

FINALLY! After three issue of being ‘lost’ Saturn Girl and Lighting Lad get back their twin boys.
Why were they taken?
something to do with Mordu..but it’s really quite unclear.
Overally this issue, and this series is a bit confusing to follow on an issue by issue basis, with too many sub-plots getting too little treatment in individual issues.
Now in a trade paperback…this all might make a whole lot more sense…

Star Wars Fate of the Jedi: Allies – Jedi and Sith join together to destroy Abeloth September 3, 2010

So far, the Star Wars Fate of the Jedi series has been interesting, but each book leaves us feeling a bit cheated – and Allies is no exception.
Yes there are some AWESOME sequence in this book, but there are also sooooooo very many issues that make no sense whatsoever as well.
Vestara and Ben — seemingly – get closer, Daala continues to take aim against the Jedi and the Sith of the Lost Tribe become allies with Luke Skywalker.
It is the Jedi Sith alliance that makes the least amount of sense. Did the Sith want to destroy Abeloth (the evil being in the Maw making all the Jedi nuts?)? That’s unclear.
The actual end of Abeloth was also unclear and to us – very unsatisfying as well.
This is a middle episode book – and no, not middle episode as in Empire Strikes Back.
The writing is brilliant and we all know and love these characters at this point, the problem is the unfulfilled plot, which leaves us wanting more (a good thing), but with too many loose ends.
Overall though, this is a tremendously enjoying book to read that is literally a non-stop ‘page-turner’ that all Star Wars expanded universe fans will enjoy.
