So far, the Star Wars Fate of the Jedi series has been interesting, but each book leaves us feeling a bit cheated – and Allies is no exception.
Yes there are some AWESOME sequence in this book, but there are also sooooooo very many issues that make no sense whatsoever as well.
Vestara and Ben — seemingly – get closer, Daala continues to take aim against the Jedi and the Sith of the Lost Tribe become allies with Luke Skywalker.
It is the Jedi Sith alliance that makes the least amount of sense. Did the Sith want to destroy Abeloth (the evil being in the Maw making all the Jedi nuts?)? That’s unclear.
The actual end of Abeloth was also unclear and to us – very unsatisfying as well.
This is a middle episode book – and no, not middle episode as in Empire Strikes Back.
The writing is brilliant and we all know and love these characters at this point, the problem is the unfulfilled plot, which leaves us wanting more (a good thing), but with too many loose ends.
Overall though, this is a tremendously enjoying book to read that is literally a non-stop ‘page-turner’ that all Star Wars expanded universe fans will enjoy.

We’ve long been big fans of alternate universes/history.
Now we’ve got (yet another) Superman alternate reality, this time it’s one in which Jor-El didn’t send his baby son Kal-El to Earth all alone.
This time the whole El family comes to Earth!
It’s a great twist to see how things develop and how the Kent’s still find a way to be involved in the storyline.
Instead of a Fortress of Solitude – there is the El Tower – and a ship with a 12th level intelligence..
and oh yeaaaah at the end of this first issue..Kal-El ends up with a pair of siblings too.
Brilliant storytelling and magnificent artwork makes this a must-read for all Superman fans.

Star Wars Legacy #50 was supposed to be the final issue of Star Wars Legacy.
BUT IT’S NOT.
The sleemos at Dark Horse are only putting the series on hiatus and then coming back at us with a ‘mini-series’ in december.
Yeaah that’s low-ball Hutt scum territory. Instead of continuing the series for another 6 issues – they scare the bantha poodu out of us and tell us they’re canceling the series.
The final #50 – regular Legacy issue was good – but it wasn’t good enough to be the FINAL issue of the series regular run. Nothing is really resolved – except well that Darth Krayt is back..and oh yeah Cade is going to hunt him again – BIG KRIFFING DEAL – been there, done that and read that before.
With so many layers in Legacy, there are so many loose ends and none were wrapped up in this issue. It’s not a final issue and not deserving finale for the final issue of the greatest Star Wars comic ever written/drawn.
We don’t understand Dark Horse – or why they’d screw with us this way – it’s not cool. YES we’re very excited for the new Legacy mini-series, but we would have been EVEN HAPPIER if there would be an issue 51 coming out in September.

Yeaah SyFy is once again trying to kill a solid scifi series with bad placement..no Tuesday isn’t the worst day for a show – but you better believe that we’ll be among the millions that DVR it.
Here’s the official blurb from Syfy:
STARGATE UNIVERSE — Season 2 Premieres Tuesday, September 28, at 9PM (NEW NIGHT) — Stargate Universe returns with 20 all-new episodes for season two. SGU follows a band of soldiers, scientists and civilians, who must fend for themselves as they are forced through a Stargate when their hidden base comes under attack. The desperate survivors emerge aboard an ancient ship, which is locked on an unknown course and unable to return to Earth. In the new season, the team fights to take back the ship from the Lucian Alliance, who transported themselves on board Destiny with plans to take control. The team also discovers their true mission. Season two guest stars include Robert Knepper (Heroes, Prison Break) and Julie McNiven (Supernatural, Mad Men) for a multi-episode arc in which they portray members of the Lucian Alliance. The greatest Star Wars story (outside of the original movies) ever told is coming to an end..
TODAY.
Today the last issue of Star Wars Legacy ships – and yes we’re very sad.
Legacy is THE REASON why we got back into comics. Issue #0 (with that awesome pic of Darth Talon on the cover) jumped out at us and we’ve been hooked ever since.
This is the Star Wars universe turned upside down.
The Sith are many and the Empire and its own Imperial Jedi Knights.
The regular Jedi order is on the run.
And the last Skywalker – Cade – is a drug using bounty hunter that would make Bobba Fett cringe.
There has never been a Star Wars saga like Legacy – it excels on every level, characters, plot, dialogue and art.
Ending this series at #50 is the dumbest thing we’ve ever seen from a comic book publisher and there is no way that this story should end with this issue. There is also no way that this entire story will be over with this issue either.
Do we expect to see the Legacy era in Star Wars books? HELL YES.
Will we ever see Cade Skywalker again in a comic book? We sure hope so… He is the ultimate force user – not quite a Jedi, not a Sith and a type of bounty hunter scum that would always shoot first and then shoot up on drugs later.
We will miss Legacy dearly – and yes Dark Horse will not be getting our dollars in the same frequency they used too (dumb move Dark Horse!).

Unbelievable! Lucas is going to release – yet another version of Star Wars – this time on bluray in 2011
No we don’t know if we Han will shoot first this time…but we will see a new scene in Return of the Jedi.
remember the scene where Vader meets Luke on Endor and Vader says – ‘I see you’ve constructed a new lightsaber’ well now – 30 yrs later we’ll finally see Luke building that lightsaber.
There was a clip up on YouTube, but Lucas has gotten that pulled down.

We’ve been fans of the Star Wars Fate of the Jedi series so far — sure we can’t afford to buy the hardcovers (so we get ’em from the public library–unlike paperbacks which we buy..), but it’s worth the wait in most cases.
This one is mostly about Dathomir and what happens on that planet..yeaah Luke fight the sith again..and sure Ben is starting to like the Sith Chik…all good fun.
Over on Coruscant, it’s the usual nonsense and this book does a poorer job than its predecessors at showing that environment.
But overall, an incremental step in building out the bigger fate of the jedi story as the new Sith order becomes btr known. The whole battle btwn Daala and the Jedi on Coruscant in nonsense that we mostly skipped over, but the Jedi/Sith part is fine reading…
We can hardly wait until it’s our turn on the wait list to pick up the next book in this fun series.
Doctor Who – The Pandorica Open to the Big Bang 2 Flop July 25, 2010

alrighty at long last (and thanks to Amazon’s video on demand) We’ve now finally caught up and seen the final two episodes of Matt Smith’s inaugural season as Doctor Who.
The Pandorica Opens – was brilliant wasn’t it? a box made to contain the most dangerous thing in the universe – which turns out to be the good doctor himself – we did not see that one coming.
the return of Rory was a bit lame -but hey it kinda sorta worked.
The Big Bang episode however – did not work. We really like River – she’s an awesome character and hopefully we learn her secrets sooner rather than later…
Beyond that though the attempt to tie together the entire season – the crack in the wall – was a good idea , but poorly executed. It really didn’t make sense.
The only thing that we liked was how in the end, Amy finally does get married…then again it could have been a great continuing saga to have her always a day away from being married.

What’s wrong with the management at SyFy?
This week they announced that Caprica would be returning for the second half of its first season — ok that’s good news – but that SUCKY news is that the second half of the first season won’t air till 2011.
What the FRAK is the point?
Why string fans on soooo long?
Haven’t the show already been produced?
Maybe in the change from SciFi Channel to SyFy they decided they had to make fans wait for stuff…then again the delay between half seasons of Battlestar Galactica was horrible too.
Frankly we just don’t get it.

Iain M Banks – Inversions – Review – Not quite a Culture novel is it? July 17, 2010

We’ve become big fans of Iain M Banks and his Culture novels (recently we reviewed Player of Games).
Inversions is a very different book in that the Culture never actually shows up. There are no big grand ships or Orbitals…but there is an old dagger in the Doctor’s boot which obviously is a Knife-Missile.
The whole dueling tales of the Doctor and the Bodguard are brilliantly intertwined and we get a ‘hint’ of the culture (and maybe even Special Cirucumstances) but the viewpoint of the narrator, doens’t know of the culture.
Yes this is an entertaining book — but not in the way we might have expected. The backward ‘ancient’ ways of this planet (do we ever learn its name?) are never ‘outted’ by the Culture – then again De War does have that little on-going story about Lavisha…
No we didn’t see the ending coming — but the again that’s the best part of Banks books isn’t it? The fact that there is always some kind of magnificent conclusion that makes sense — but is still very much a surprise.

Patrick Stewart celebrates his 70th birthday today!
Sure Stewart was an actor long before Star Trek TNG made him into a SciFi icon.
We remember well watching him as the evil Sejanus in I,Claudius (1974..) ..but for us here at ShowMeSciFi.com..it is his role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard which we will always think off first.
Picard was the most the core element in that first episode of TNG that held the show together -his Shakesperean presence gave the show an order of dramatic magnititude trek had never seen before — or since.

It’s hard to believe and accept that Star Wars Legacy is almost done.
Issue #49 is the second last issue and there is so much left undiscovered and unresolved.
So we’ve got Cade still on a Sith killing mission and that’s great, he’s now on Utapau knocking down the sith and he’ll come in contact with the Galactic Alliance too for the first time in…oh what 50 issues?!!
The Princess Fel being held by her former Imperial Knight master – now turned Sith – is kinda of a neat twist too..but with so much going on , it’s impact is marginal.
How will this series end? Will Fel return to control? Where is Krayt? Will Cade Skywalker become the Emperor?
so very many things going on..this series could AND SHOULD continued for a very long time.
It’s a shame and a travesty that Dark Horse is ending this series at #50. They’ve promised some kind of surprise — so we’ll see what they’ve got in store…but seeing as Legacy is without a doubt ..THE GREATEST STAR WARS COMIC OF ALL TIME …we doubt they’ll surprise us.

yeah the head butt memory transfer thing was cool…it was also neat how he picked up soccer real fast too (how did he do that?)
And the bluetooth headset to communicate with Amy in the Tardis was also a neat new item too.
The alien ship on the flat that was ‘destroyed’ by humans that loved each other…kinda lame…
But hey still a fun episode — Matt Smith continues to entertain us overall.

yeaah we know, we’re not as fast as those in the UK when it comes to watching Doctor Who — and sure we’re even behind BBC America too…We’re getting out Doctor Who fix by buying episodes from Amazon now and we’re up to — Vincent and the Doctor
What a great episode that works on so many different levels. Sure it’s always great to see the Doctor visit historical figures but the twist with the blind ‘monster alien’ was neat on so many levels.
The fact that Vincent van Gough could also detect Amy’s pain (at the loss of Rory even though she didn’t know it..) was also a neat twist. We didn’t see a crack in the wall in this episode (or did we?), but hey a fine entertaining episode…
and we don’t recall seeing that device (mirror and printer) that could identify objects, though it sure seemed like a throwback to something the Doctor might have used in the 1960’s…

Back in May, GPS vendor TomTom released their first Star Wars themed GPS voices – with a Darth Vader module.
Now they’re moving away for the Dark Side with a new Yoda voice that is soo amazing you too will use the Force to find your destination.
As was the case with the Darth Vader GPS module, the good folks at TomTom have put together a behind the scenes video with the 900 year old Jedi Master himself.

Superman #700 – wow..how many titles last so long?
This is an omnibus with a few interesting stories – and a few not so interesting ones.
There is a ‘cute’ little story about Superman helping out Robin (Dick Grayson) which we enjoyed.
On the – not so enjoyable side — Superman after the monumental events of New Krypton – has some second thoughts about his hero stature..after a woman whose husband he could not save slaps him.
Look – superman can’t save everyone right? So why did he get so down?
This is the direction of the new Superman creative team – and NO WE DON’T LIKE IT.
New Krypton was an awesome story arc – but a moody superman that is examining his own shortcomings isn’t a superman that we personally find all that entertaining.
