Save Journeyman December 21, 2007

So it looks like Journeyman’s journey has ended a bit prematurely.

BooHoo.

It’s a series that had some interesting elements but took far too long to properly develop any kind of plot or series cohesion. Frankly i never got it…though plenty of others did.

As is the case with every SciFi that meets an early demise there are always those who want to bring it back..save it like Star Trek was saved by fans.

With Journeyman though i’m not sure it’ll work. But hey you never know. Check out the SaveJourneyman trailer and decide for yourself if you’ve got the power to save a show.

Blade Runner Returns for Final Cut December 18, 2007

Today is the day. Finally the Final Cut of Blade Runner is out!!

Depending on your level of interest there are a number of different collections that are out now..there is aBlade Runner (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition)
, Blade Runner (Four-Disc Collector’s Edition)and then there is the Blade Runner – The Final Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition) itself which you can get in a simple two disc collection.

Considering how many versions  on VHS and DVD I’ve already owned..the only purchase I’m making is for the Final Cut.

Even though Blade Runner is 25 years old..the Final Cut is a renewed version. Not just simple things like the odd special effects tweak, but actual new footage too -director Ridley Scott has actually redone the awesome scene with ZHORA where Decker (Harrison Ford) shoots her and she goes crashing through all the retail windows.

In the two disc Final Cut version the second disc is a 3.5 hour documentary called Dangerous Days which is all about the making and mythos of Blade Runner.

Blade Runner is one of the rare breed of SciFi classics that actually get better with each release..though of course everyone has their preference if they want the Decker narrated version or not – personally i like the narration but i know that I’m in the minority.

Every SciFi movie made since 1982 has been influenced by Blade Runner and as such this Final Edition should find a home in every SciFi fan’s DVD.

CBS has fired its entire StarTrek.com team.

Once again Big Media has proven that it cares little for SciFi fans and our genre. I strongly encourage all readers of ShowMeSciFi.com to send a letter of support to the StarTrek.com team.

Here’s their full post:

Goodbye from the STARTREK.COM Team

Sadly, we must report that CBS Interactive organization is being restructured, and the production team that brings you the STARTREK.COM site has been eliminated. Effective immediately. We don’t know the ultimate fate of this site, which has served millions of Star Trek fans for the last thirteen years.

If you have comments, please send them to editor @ startrek.com – we hope someone at CBS will read them.

Thank you for your loyal fandom over the years. It has been a pleasure to serve you.

Star Wars Legacy of the Force Fury – Review December 13, 2007

Star Wars Legacy of the Force Fury has a furious pace. From end to end the characters are engaged in battle, some larger than others.

This isn’t the best book in the series but it is in the top two. The conflict/civil war continues to be very confusing all around and this book doesn’t simplify the conflict much.

In terms of plot it ends a few plot lines : Centerpoint and Alema Rar. It also closes the loop on the secrecy of Allanna which is neat.

But the book is still space opera..with dozens of loose ends..which is of course why there are still more books to follow.

The double life of Caedus/Solo continues to be annoying…he’s the only one that knows he’s a ‘real’ Sith..and the real ‘Sith’ for some reason continue to remain in the shadows. I hope we’ll see more of the Korriban Sith sooner rather than later.

Overall 3.5 out of five stars for this latest book in the Star Wars Legacy saga.

Futurama Bender’s Big Score – It’s real SciFi (kinda) December 7, 2007

Sure sure Futurama is a cartoon..and it’s funny and insolent.

But i just finished watching the new movie – Bender’s Big Score – and guess what? It’s actually really solid plot wise with a really intricate time travel plot thread that really works.

Time and time paradox have always been a part of Futurama but never in such an intricate and well thought out way.

The comical – doom meter – which measures how likely something bad is going to happen – is a campy – but fun way to explain away the paradox of time travel and multiple instances of person.

Instead of wiping another person from existence or multiple timelines/parallel universes – the doom paradox is simple. Because the paradox person should never have existed they have a higher doom quotient and thus are more likely to have doom hit them and so the universe will fall back into order.

Yeaaah i know the problem is still the causality of it all. Since the new paradox person will impact the timeline in a way that the old timeline hadn’t been impacted..even if doom hits that person.

Still…

Futurama Bender’s Big Score isn’t just funny (and it’s VERY FUNNY) it’s actually interesting SciFi too.

Not a great issue, but not bad either.
The plot moves along as Zayne avoids death (again) at the hands of one of the guilty Jedi who actually did kill padawans. It wasn’t a particularly strong scene in this issue, but it worked.

Really that’s the best way to sum this issue up – it works to move along the plot. This whole arc on Taris winds up next issue so all the characters need to be in their proper positions…and that’s where they’re going…

And perhaps from a wider perspective, the introduction of Cassus Fett as a strong Mando’ade is key here…we all know that eventually Fett will become the Mandalore and generations that follow with the Fett name will carry the title too…(like Boba Fett in Legacy of the Force).

Star Trek XI Bad Guy a Real Hulk October 11, 2007

Alright so Eric Bana will be one of the bad guys in Star Trek XI.

We don’t know yet whether he’ll be a human/Romulan/Klingon/ or some other species.

We don’t know if there will be another bad guy in the movie either.

We do know that it’s classic era stuff – so Klingon or Romulan would still be my guesses..

But we’ll have to wait some time yet till we know for sure. Star Trek XI doesn’t hit the theaters till Xmas 2008.

Oh and let’s not forget …they still have to cast KIRK!

Serenity 2 (Firefly) Not Just a Fanboys Pipedream October 8, 2007

Apparently the runaway success of the special edition of Serenity has led to talk of a Serenity sequel.

Alan Tudyk (he’s the dude that played the pilot Walsh and got speared by a Reaver) told movie site that a sequel may happen.

“They had to put the new DVD out because they’ve been selling out of the other one [the DVD that isn’t the ‘Collectors Edition’] and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’”, he says, adding “And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie”.]

Let’s hope they call it Return of the Browncoats or something like that and have it be a full out battle with the browncoats taking back what they lost at Serenity.

Firefly was cut short by Fox and was not properly marketed as a movie by Universal – maybe a direct to DVD flick is the answer – i don’t know. All i know is that Firefly fans WANT MORE.

Star Trek XI may not be in theatres until xmas of 2008, but that doesn’t mean that trekkers/trekkies need to wait that long to see Trek on the big screen.

Real Classic Trek too.

The original episode – The Menagerie is being aired in full HD super special effect goodness across the US and Canada. The showing is a one day event in honor of the HD-DVD release of Star Trek Season One.

No question that the re-mastered Star Trek is awesome. but on the big screen.

WOW.
