It’s that time of year again! Atom Films Star Wars Fan film challenge 2009 and you’ve only got until Friday July 10th to vote.
As was the case last year – there are a few retreads from other Star Wars Fan film venues – but there are also some that we’ve never seen elsewhere that are truly AWESOME.
Unfortunately Atom still doesn’t have a video clips that can be directly shared/embedded in a wordpress.com blog — which by the way Atom execs – TOTALLY SUX Bantha Fodder –
Among the finalists this year that we like are:
Here it is as a contestant in the 2006 Spacey Awards
Knights of the Old Republic: Revan IS a fantastic live action version of Darth Revan that is great to watch.
For the horny toads out there the clear winner is:
Saber which pits two hot stripper chicks against each other in some weird version of light saber strip attacking.
And our final pick is :
WTF Star Wars – which is an alternate take on Episode IV – where the Death Star survives and Destroys Yavin IV.
Go to the Atom Films Star Wars site and see ’em all for yourself and be sure to vote – and tell us who you voted for!

Remember Alien Nation? The alien cop/human cop scifi show from the 80’s?
Welcome to ReMake Hell friends SciFi is planning on restarting the series.
Well maybe not remake hell – especially if they reboot the series with different characters – maybe a female cop this time around
Daniel Jackson set to appear in Stargate Universe July 6, 2009

Yeaah Stargate Universe is supposed to be its own Stargate series, but it looks like we’ll get a few cameos from regular old Stargate SG-1 t ypes too.
Michael Shanks the actor who plays Daniel Jackson apparently is already on board.
“I will say I got the script and there’s a good chance Daniel will be making a brief cameo along with some other people from the Stargate universe,” Shanks said in an interview with The Official Stargate SG-1/Atlantis Magazine. “That’s probably as much as I can say without getting my nuts chopped off. I’m literally in there for two seconds to provide some brief information. I’m not an integral part of it at all.”
Star Wars Fate of the Jedi book 2: Omen is now out — but it’s too expensive June 29, 2009

We mostly liked the first book in the Fate of the Jedi series: Outcast. It starts off an interesting new Star Wars series..
The only problem is that this series is all hardcover and as such is triple the price per book of a paperback.
The economy is what it is and hey we can’t afford to buy an all-hardcover series anymore here at ShowMeSciFi.com.
The new book – Omen – has been out for a week or so and we expect to see prices drop for used copies on Amazon at some point (hopefully).
The decision by Lucas to allow an all hardcover (read more $$) star war series IS A DISGUSTING MONEY GRAB.
Even if they went for a mix of some hard and some paperback – like Legacy of the Force – that would work. This way the series is inaccessable to thousands of fans like us — that live in the real world where salaries (if you have a job) are slashed and money is tight
Virtuality was actually pretty good June 27, 2009

After all the negative hype about Ron Moore’s (ex-BSG) Virtuality show – I expect the show to really suck.
IT DIDN’T.
Virtuality was actually a really decent human drama – the special Fx were pitiful and worse than what the BBC does – but the basic plot line was interesting as were the characters.
Sure…it had the same Hal/2001 element
And sure the virtual word stuff was basic too.
But the way it was all put together, the captain cheating with the pyschiatrist’s wife.doctor having parkinson’s — captain dying – the evil dude in the virtual worlds — it was really cool.
The basic idea of having a reality tv show in space at first seemed kind of lame – but just like how it kinda sorta works The Office – it rly works well for Virtuality
Will we see the show?
Likely not – this was a one off pilot at this point but hey you never know…
Star Wars The Old Republic – The Sith Sack Coruscant – Game trailer June 25, 2009

This is perhaps the most awesome game trailer ever made.
The animation is frakking fantastic! If the actual gameplay of Star Wars The Old Republic is anything close to the cinematic quality of the trailer — this game will revolutionize the Star Wars universe.
This is an era that the Dark Horse comics have lightly touched on, but never like this.
This is hundreds of Sith fighting hundreds of Jedi in an animation style that rivals real actors.
So long and thanks for all the fish – REVIEW Hitchikers Guide to the Gal June 22, 2009

Each book in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is different and each has its own charm. We just finished reading So Long and Thanks for all the Fish – and wow a bit different than the other books — yet still very enjoyable to read.
Earth – thanks to the Dolphins – is back. Once you get over that little plot hump we get Arthur Dent’s first real love interest and it’s funny to read.
The quest to find out what happened to the Dolphins – also hilarious – and of course the final chapters and the final(?) end of Marvin are totally classic.
This book read to me like more of a complete and cohesive tale in a more structured way than any of the other Hitchhiker books. From begining to end – this book kinda/sorta/mostly — makes sense.

Totally hilarious. A drunk Bill Shatner shows up on the Tonight Show and tries to tell a funny story that was supposed to end with him giving the Vulcan salute.
Only he can’t do it cause he’s too drunk. Conan goes nuts and jumps on a table yelling at him!

No we didn’t like Star Trek XI all that much but do did like the Star Trek Countdown comic book prequel.
The same people are now back it and set to bring us the Star Trek Nero series.
Remember that Nero was ‘stuck’ for 25 years waiting for Spock prime to return..what happened during that period?
We know he gets stuck a Rurah Penthe but what else?
That’s what this comic will explore. It’s not out till August, but we’ll be waiting for it!

Dollhouse is back on Friday Sept. 18 at 9 p.m.
This new second season should start off with a real bang as Echo is still out on the run with Alpha..
and oh yeah Agent Ballard is now working for the Dollhouse (for now).
We don’t have to wait until september to get our first new dollhouse episode though – the word is that the season one DVD (now available for pre-order from Amazon) will include a missing 13th episode.

Season two starts on Thursday September 17th at 9 PM. That’s right Fringe is moving from Tuesdays to Thursday and will now be up against The Office.
Will Fringe survive? I don’t think so..this is the wrong time slot for this show.
Timing aside, we’re really looking forward to the second season of Fringe..the whole Leonard Nimoy multi-verse has so many dramatic possibilities ..as does Olivia’s transformation into understanding her super-human powers.
For some strange reason, the DVD collection of Fringe: The Complete First Season is not out till the week before season two starts.

Green Lantern is coming back to the big screen and is now set for a June 17, 2011 release date.
No casting decisions have yet been – officially made – but the fans have already spoken – Nathan Fillion – aka Firefly’s Captain Mal should be Hal Jordan the Green Lantern.
Check out this (fan made) trailer for the new Green Lantern below — yeah it’s got that Star Trek soundtrack vibe – but it works
Buck Rogers SUCKS – it’s re-imagined and he’s now fighting talking Bears June 15, 2009

Hey we’re all for re-booting old sci-fi concepts when it makes sense — BSG being the best example. And we LOVED the 80’s TV series.
But the new Dynamite comic book series Buck Rogers is LAME. Issue #0 from free comic book day looked a little slick and we didn’t know what to expect.
Now we’ve got the first real issue and it SUCKS.
Instead of being with NASA ..Buck is a scientist entrepneur figuring out a new propulsion system … he gets vaulted into the future – we don’t know how- crash lands in a ditch and Wilma (yeah she’s back) finds him…
But they gotta run..cause Bears are coming..
Buck says when you see a bear just play dead and it’ll leave you alone but these are walking talking human stalking bears…it’s about as lame an idea as anyone can imagine.
the costumes for the Earth’ers are slick, beyond that this new Buck Rogers is quite possibly the worst iteration of Buck Rogers in his 80+ years of life.
We won’t be buying this crap ever again.

Yeaah Terminator Salvation as a movie was kinda lame – but Blair the A-10 Warthog pilot was kinda hot..
And she’s BAAACK! Well at least the animated version of her in the Terminator Salvation Machinima series. You can get the whole series from Amazon, but check out the Episode 1 preview below…
The animation is pretty slick, the story not too shabby and overall it’s good Terminator fun.

ok SO we didn’t LOVE Star Trek XI because of some alternate universe timeline issues…but maybe we were a little harsh..
We just finished reading the Star Trek Countdown Trade Paperback, and it sure does a lot to help Star Trek XI make sense.
For one, the comic ties in the Next Generation cast – Picard in this comic is the ambassador to Vulcan, Worf works for the Klingons and Data is back as Captain of the Enterprise (an imprint on B-4).
Nero’s ship — is explained as a Romulan research project including the best of Borg technology — that makes sense..and I sure wish the movie added that tidbit of info..
Red matter is well explained as is the Hobes star that destroyed Romulus. Basically this is the story that the movie failed to tell effectively – told from a post Star Trek Nemesis timeline.
It’s great stuff and it sure is too bad that this wasn’t part of the actual movie – that would have made the difference – for us – for Star Trek XI being ok – to Star Trek XI being the best Star Trek ever made.
Life, The Universe and Everything – Hitchiker’s Trilogy book 3 (re)Review June 10, 2009

After finishing the Restaurant at the End of the Universe in April, we now come to Life, The Universe and Everything — the third book in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
This is one fine book.
The central storyline in this book – of the evil Krikket – is sublime and delightful. Along the way there is the usual Adams nonsense, though in this book – to us at least – more of it seems to makes sense.
The people of Krikket just want to be the only ones in the Universe – i can understand that…
The little side plots – the one with the creature that Arthur Dent keeps killing again and again ..and his continuously changing bags are both hilarious..
But the one with the immortal that is spending eternity finding every sentient in the universe to deliver an insult is sheer brilliance esp the final graph of the book.

New Futurama episodes headed to Comedy Central? June 9, 2009

Yeeaah we liked the Futurama direct to DVD movies just fine (some of them)
Bender’s Game, Into the Wild Green Yonder, The Beast with a Billion Backs and Bender’s Big Score.
The rumor is now that Comedy Central home of South Park – is set to pick up 13 episodes. Thats would be pretty sweet.
And it would mean that Fox could finally kiss Bender’s behind goodbye (or would it?)
Then again the direct to DVD stuff has been neat..though having 30 mins episodes is a very different thing. We wouldn’t have these longer stories that tie together – which can be a lot of fun.
