Which Science Fiction Writer Are You? April 21, 2007

There a nifty little quiz I just came across that helps you determine which Science Fiction writer you’d like be.
Mine came up with Gregory Benford.
Certainly not a bad option but not what I would have thought.
Now if you were to ask me which SciFi writer would I aspire to be like that’s an easy one.

Asimov hands down.
It is Asimov’s Empire stories and the the Foundation series that first lit the SciFi spark for me.
Asimov had a personality that just enlivened and enriched everything he wrote. You can feel the masters presence in each page and with each page you want to read more.
It is a gift that will always be remembered. Asimov will never be forgotten.
Stargate SG-1 Season 10 Line in the Sand April 20, 2007

Not a bad episode but not a great one either.
Something goes wrong when SG-1 attempts to use Merlin’s phasing device to hide a village from the Ori army, forcing Mitchell and the critically wounded Carter to hide themselves out of phase from an occupation force of ruthless Ori soldiers
It’s entirely predictable and not particularly challenging except for Vala’s Ori husband who defies the prior.
Beyond that…looking forward to the next episode….countdown to the series finale is still on…
Star Trek Shields Soon To Be Science Fact – Not Science Fiction April 18, 2007

RED ALERT SHIELDS UP!!
Where would the Starship Enterprise NCC-1701 be without her shields?
(oh yeah it would be the NX-01 with that totally bogus hull plating nonsense).
According to a report on the BBC, British scientists are actively working to make SciFi Shields a reality. Details have been presented at the Royal Astronomical Society’s National Astronomy Meeting in Preston, UK.Scientists hope to mimic the magnetic field which protects the Earth.
Don’t expect to be deflecting Klingon disruptors anytime soon though..the shields are more about deflecting solar radiation than incoming particle weapons fire.
You don’t need much of a magnetic field to hold off the solar wind. You could produce the shield 20-30 kilometres away from the spacecraft,” explained Dr Ruth Bamford, from the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory in Didcot, UK in a statement

Battlestar Galactica Cylon Apocalypse issue #2 – Cylons came from snakes?! April 17, 2007

With the popularity of the new re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, there has been alot of speculation about how the Cylons evolved from machines to flesh and blood.
Cylon Apocalypse issue #2 offers a potential answer – though it will never EVER show up in the new series – since Cyclon Apocalypse is a classic era based comic.
Long story short is that the Cylon are experimenting with some kind of biogenic substance that reverts the cylons to a reptilian/mamilian form.
In this issue of the comic (which continues from the excellent issue #2). Adama decides to try and negotiate with a Cylon viceroy but as well all know there is no negation with the cylon.
GREAT FRAKKING STUFF. It really makes me wish that the new show was
a) actually on now instead of on an 8 month hiatus
b) that the new show had an imperious leader, viceroys and cylon mainframe worlds.
In the absence of the SciFi show, the Dynamite Entertainment comic series is THE BEST BSG thing running.
Clash of the Titans Set To Return Thanks to Empire Strikes Back Writer April 16, 2007

Remember 1981’s Clash of the Titans?
I sure do. Cheesy special effects and all, it’s a classic. And like all good classics it’s going to be remade.
But this remake is going to be written by Star Wars Episode V Empire Strikes Back Writer Lawrence Kasdan.
The original 1981 story revolves around Zeus’ son, Perseus, and his journey to save Princess Andromeda during which he must complete various tasks set out by Zeus, including capturing Pegasus and slaying Medusa and fighting the Kraken.
No word yet on when this beast will hit the screens or on who might be cast. Sir Lawrence Olivier was Zeus in the original – who’s gonna top that?
Here for your viewing enjoyment – the original 1981 trailer.

Having finally overcome all the obstacles protecting the sangraal, SG-1 and Ba’al are automatically beamed away from the underground cavern at the end of their quest, leaving an infuriated Adria behind. Arriving in a new chamber, they are astonished to discover not the mystical weapon they’ve been hunting, but rather an old man frozen in a stasis pod. The sangraal was actually destroyed long ago. In its place, however, sleeps the one man who can build a second version of the weapon: Merlin himself.
WOW.
Great episode from top to bottom. No suprises as SG-1 figures out how to defeat the dragon…
FUNNIEST LINE in the whole episode is when the team is trying to guess the dragon’s real name and Teal’C deadpans with his name suggestion of – “PUFF”.
but an interesting twist with the discovery of Merlin.
Too bad Merlin himself dies..
And too bad that Daniel gets captured by the Orii.
Oh well. Guess that just helps to set up the next few episode where SG-1 will undoubtedly track, locate and save Daniel. The countdown for the final episode of Season 10 is on!!
Stargate Atlantis season 3 – Echoes April 14, 2007

When the people of Atlantis begin to have visions of ghosts, Teyla believes the apparitions are actually Ancients unable to ascend warning them of a great danger.
Kind of a weird episode – but Stargate Atlantis does a great job of tying in stuff from previous episodes. In this case, it’s the whales that live on Atlantis.
We had this episode figure out about half way though, but still solid entertainment that’ll keep you in your seat for a full hour.
No wraith or replicators in this episode..which makes you wonder when they’re coming back (next episode maybe?)
Flash Gordon to be played by Smallville Alum April 11, 2007

Eric Johnson is set to be Flash Gordon in the upcoming series set to air on SciFi in August. ShowMeSciFi first reported on the re-emergence of Flash Gordon earlier this year.
Eric Johnson, played the role of Whitney Fordman on Smallville from 2001 to 2004. He was the first man to come between Clarke and Lana.
SciFi has ordered 22 episodes of Flash Gordon to start (if it’s good let’s hope they go for more). Flash Gordon is hopefully going to be a reimagined version (think of BSG) though its set to include Dale Arden and Dr. Hans Zarkov and of course the archtype of evil Ming the Merciless.
No word yet on theme song – but let’s hope its Queen inspired.
FLASH..aH AH!!
NASA Predicts Non-Green Plants on Other Planets April 11, 2007
Posted by showmescifi in NASA, Science, science fiction, sciencefiction, scifi.add a comment

from the fact is stranger than fiction dept..
Apparently Earth is likely the exception when it comes to having green plants. Green, yellow or even red-dominant plants may live on extra-solar planets.
As you probably remember from biology it’s chlorophyll that makes plants green. In most plants on Earth they absorb blue and red light and less green light. Therefore, chlorophyll appears green. Though some green color is absorbed, it is less than the other colors.
According to NASA scientists, our Sun has a specific distribution of colors of light, emitting more of some colors than others.
Gases in Earth’s air also filter sunlight, absorbing different colors. As a result, more red light particles reach Earth’s surface than blue or green light particles, so plants use red light for photosynthesis. There is plenty of light for land plants, so they do not need to use extra green light. But not all stars have the same distribution of light colors as our Sun. Study scientists say they now realize that photosynthesis on extrasolar planets will not necessarily look the same as on Earth.

Stephen King Dark Tower Gunslinger Born issue #3 review April 11, 2007

I don’t remember my father’s face.
That is, it’s been along time since i picked up a Stephen King Dark Tower book. Thanks to the new Marvel Comics Dark Tower Gunslinger Born series I’ve become a fan (again).
First off Gunslinger Born has what is arguably the best artwork ever seen in a modern comic book. Each page is visually glorious.
It’s always a challenge trying to visualize what Stephen King writes, the comic does a fantastic job of showing one vision of it…Gunslinger Born is not a sequel to Dark Tower but it is a prequel.
The third issue is as good (if not better than the first two) with young Roland meeting his future love and coming face to face with the big coffin hunters.
Beyond the awesome story in the front part of the book, Marvel has also included a text heavy appendix in this issue which explains the world in which Dark Tower occurs. I had always thought of it to be some sort of other universe – but it turns out that the world of Dark Tower is a post-apocalyptic Earth (and thus clearly SciFi material).
This is the best comic book series yet produced by Marvel and proof positive that comics truly are Art.
Star Wars Legacy Issue # 10 : Who’s Your Mama? April 5, 2007

WOW.
Star Wars Legacy is a series that just doesn’t quit. Cade Skywalker is still on the run and doesn’t make an appearance in this issue.
You might think that would be a problem – but that’s not the case at all.
Writer John Ostrander throws loyal readers are real curve with a startling revelation in this issue..
**NOT A SPOILER ALERT SINCE THE ISSUE IS ALREADY OUT BUT STILL THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING**
The female bounty hunter from Issue #9 that is also in this issue, Morrigan Corde – has a very special relationship with the person she is hunting – Cade Skywalker.
She’s he’s mother!!!
WOW.
It’s not anything that anyone could have seen coming and is proof positive that Star Wars Legacy remains the best Star Wars comic book series ever created.
The only ‘draw back’ (pun intended) in this issue is that Jan Duursema is still absent as the artist – so though the art is good – it’s not ridiculously fantastic.
Is Doctor Who the most popular SciFi show today? April 4, 2007
Posted by showmescifi in bbc, doctor who, doctorwho, Dr. Who, DRWHO, science fiction, sciencefiction, scifi.17 comments
Though Doctor Who gets short shaft in North America, if recent numbers are accurate –
Doctor Who isn’t just popular, it could well be THE MOST POPULAR SCIFI SHOW on Earth currently airing.
BBC is reporting that 8.2 million viewers watched the season three (or 30 ) premiere. It marked the premiere of a new assistant for the Doctor with the debut of Freema Agyeman.
At 8.2 million viewers Doctor Who is likely more popular than any recent episode of BSG or Stargate SG-1 or even Stargate Atlantis.
Apparently SciFi channel will be picking up the new season later this year but why should American wait? Why can’t the US get Doctor Who at the same time (or maybe a one day delay so BBC has bragging rights?).
Real die-hards are unlikely to wait till later this year and will find other means/methods to get the episodes they want to see. The BBC and SciFi would be well served to provide the content that viewers want quickly or risk missing out.
Star Wars Legacy – Is Darth Krayt a Jacen Solo descendant? March 29, 2007

Star Wars Legacy which has often been reviewed here on ShowMeScifi is one of the best comic books today and likely the best Star Wars comic book series ever created.
Set far beyond any other Star Wars series -the only lineage connection we’ve had so far is Cade Skywalker – a descendant of Luke.
But what about other Star Wars family trees? Dark Horse Editor Randy Stradley recently tackled that topic in a letter to the editor q&a.
1. Are we going to learn what happened to the Solo family of this time?
There are no plans for an exploration of the Solo lineage for the forseeable future. We’re not in denial about them, it’s just that there isn’t a place for them in the story. Yet.
2. Any chance of running into any other descendents of of any other Star Wars Characters?
Oh yes my friend. Oh, yes.
4. How long are we going to have to wait until we learn who Darth Krayt is under the mask?
The answer will be revealed in issue 15.
Jacen Solo is set to become a to be named Sith in the upcoming Star Wars Legacy of the Force Sacrifice book .
My guess is that Darth Krayt is a descendant of Jacen Solo.
Anyone want to take that bet?
Dr. Who Coming Back For Fourth Season – or is it the 30th season? March 22, 2007
Posted by showmescifi in bbc, Dr. Who, science fiction, sciencefiction, scifi.3 comments

BBC News is confirming that the NEW Dr. Who show will be returning for its fourth season in 2008.
It is unclear however whether or not David Tennant, would return in the lead role.
Personally i much preferred Christopher Eccleston who was the Dr in Season One of the new series.
![]()
Then again this really won’t be the fourth season will it?
Friends of the Dr know well that this is actually the 30th season of Dr. Who which ran from 1963 to 1989 making it the longest running SciFi show ever.
My favorite Dr of all time?
That’s easy.
Tom Baker.
Jelly belly anyone?
