Sanctuary is back for its third Season — yeah we know! third Season already?? – which starts on Oct 15th.

Syfy has put the show on Fridays – which is a great night and should help the shows to keep great ratings.

In celebration of the Sanctuary premiere ShowMeSciFi.com in partnership with SyFy is having a contest giveaway for some great Sanctuary and SGU stuff.  We should have some tshirts from both shows.

All you need to do to be entered into a random drawing for the giveway is to tell us what you’re most looking forward to for the upcoming season of Sanctuary.

Email us at sanctuary@showmescifi.com and we’ll print ’em all out put ’em in a hat and see what comes out. We’ll pick our winners on Friday Oct 15th -so be sure to send us your thoughts soon!

The season three opener of Sanctuary finds the team desperately trying to find a way to reach Kali to prevent catastrophic tidal waves from killing millions around the world. En route, they receive reports of massive tsunamis heading for the coasts of India, Pakistan and the Arabian Peninsula. Ravi continues on to the Sanctuary while Kate frantically tries to warn the authorities in Dharavi to sound the sirens and get their people to higher ground. Meanwhile Magnus (AMANDA TAPPING) and Henry (RYAN ROBBINS), aboard the Sanctuary vessel now taken over by a power-hungry Wexford (PAUL MCGILLION), evaluate the horrific destruction around them, caused by Big Bertha’s last magnetic impulse.

Don’t forget to catch the thrilling Season 3 premiere of Sanctuary at 10pm on Friday, October 15th!

Caprica – Unvanquished – so is Amanda Graystone dead or not? October 9, 2010

So Caprica is finally back – with –Unvanquished no this was not a fantastic episode.

First of all, it feels like we’re missing something ..in between the final episode of season one – before the 1.5 start – greystone still controlled his own company and Amanda Greystone jumped off a bridge.

Now Daniel lost his company – ok we see that..but how? and now whats the deal with the Tauron mafia?

Amanda Greystone is dead right? Sister Clarice is just visiting her in holobands…she must be right??

Overall, this was a boring episode with little to no action (blowing up the Caprica stadium was kinda neat) and the drama was disconnected.

Die-hard fans like will stick it out, but after such a weak premiere for season 1.5, we doubt this show will gain any new converts.

Aftermath
HURRAY Rush finally unlocked the code to the Destiny’s control room….but are those visions he sees or is Destiny actually trying to speak to him?

We think it’s a bit of both.

All issues about the ability of the ship to fall out of warp aside, what about the food replicator type capabilities of the ship? Shouldn’t he have been focusing on fixing that too?

By far the most disturbing part of the show was the mercy kill – yes it was understandable, but no that’s not what we want to see. It could have just been  a cutaway shot of some kind we didn’t actually have to see the suffocation, that was unnecessarily graphic.

So what is the other ship? clearly another ancient ship, but what is its purpose?

A simple item like a pen can set off a chain reaction that ends up with three (or more) people dead?

Astounding.

Fringe has a neat- super plot – but the minor episode plots are still amazing. The whole concept of a human being able to calculate all the permutations and combinations was a great concept.

We also learned more about the mirror Earth.

Apparently there was an – Aruba War  – (remember the homeless guy on the street? he had a sign that said Aruba War veteran — guess the battle was over who had the best beach..)

And we know that they’ve got some serious air quality issues too.

Olivia is falling apart in the mirror universe and she will crack soon….

Just when we thought the Amy Sheldon – Shamy – relationship was done….

they get right back together again.

Amy is a great character though and we wonder how long it will be under they tackle the issue of the ‘coitus’

IAIN M. BANKS – MATTER – The Shellworld Review — yeah it’s long but it’s another awesome Culture novel October 7, 2010

We just finished reading Ian M. Banks massive tome Matter and like most culture books, it has made us think about alot of things.

As we’ve experienced before with Banks, there are some amazing SciFi constructs – in this book we’re introduced to the concept of a Shellworld, with layers of diff civilizations living on each and are introduced to the Mothanveld, an Optimae species nearly on par with the Culture.

At the beginning until nearly the end, we thought this would be a book about revenge – and even thought that was Ferbin and Djan’s goal – that didn’t quite happen did it?

But the ending was entirely satisfying and typically Banks. No, there wasn’t a major revelation at the end of this massive book, but it did makes sense and did leave us with the same sense we get whenever we get to the end of a Culture book.

AMAZING.

The deeper level of meaning in this book – about Matter – that there are levels within levels and it’s never clear who is being played by whom, is weaved so brilliantly into this book – it’s the very fabric of the multiple plots and subplots.

Sure, we ran into some sections that were over-written and sure we skipped over graphs here and there, that just went on and on and on. But the story, the characters, the new tech and the intense drama of wanting to know what would happen next makes Matter an awesome read.

Our fav Culture book still remains the first – Consider Phelbas, the ending of Use of Weapons still remains the greatest twist, the Special Circumstances sub-plot in Look to Windward is still better as is SC’s devious game playing in The Player of Games.

Matter fits well into the Culture canon – giving us a new look into the larger Galaxy, SC and a new type of world view.

Banks is the greatest SciFi writer of this generation and he continues to deliver with Matter. Yes the size of the book might look intimidating, but it’s worth the effort.

Caprica is back and this half season – technically season 1.5 – will see the Cylons join the mob.

In an interview with press, Sasha Roiz, the fine actor that plays Sam Adama gave up the details:

“I think you’ll see a lot of people interacting with Cylons,” Roiz said. “I think it’s
basically what we’re driving towards is the introduction of the Cylons into this world. And so it’s going to definitely cross paths with just about everybody’s storylines.”

ShowMeSciFi.com was also on the call with Roiz and we picked out the best bits in the clip below:

Episode 2 of the final season of Smallville was another solid episode – officially titled Shield

saw the return of Michael Shanks aka Daniel Jackson aka Hawkman – and that was reason enough to watch this show.

The whole discussion of Nietche’s Ubermench — the Superman – was awesome and show the depth that this show truly has.

Cat Grant was interesting and Deadshot is one sharpshooting villain.

Great stuff (and if you missed it Amazon has it on demand)

Intervention
was a fine way to start the new season of SGU.

Tonnes of action.

Lots of drama

Great Acting

Haunting music.

What more can we ask for?

TJ’s baby being safe on the outcast planet is a great subplot storyline that will yield some interesting results. The Aliens that saved her baby (that live in the nebula like cloud?) are likely some kind of ascended beings…likely Ancients (or Atlantians?)

Having the ex-Leutian alliance ppl on boards as kinda/sorta friendlies is also a great twist that will further heighten the drama. So we’ve got Earther’s, Leutians, civilians and military. Nice.

The Stargate franchise has lasted as long as it has for only one reason – the writers keeping find ways to keep the show fresh. With SGU season 2, they’re off to a great start.
