“We’re Going The Wrong Way.”
-Kara Thrace (Starbuck the Cylon).
Though we’ve got to wait till 2008 for the final season of Battlestar Galactica (season 4), SciFi Network is already teasing us with what it’s all about.
We’ve known all along that like the original Battlestar Galactica – it’s about the quest for Earth. With the re-imagined series its also a quest for the final five cylons and their mysterious link with humanity.
The promo trailer gives us a few hints of what we’re going to see. Starbuck is captured and her Cylon butt is put into the brig. The final five cylons do their non-human thing – like Col Tye pulling a weapon on Admiral Adama.
AWESOME stuff and I can hardly wait for it to start.
Ohhh – for those of you outside of the US – here’s the full Season 4 Promo Trailer. Enjoy!

PlasterWars6 tested the ‘plaster’ of Star Wars rocketry in a way that hasn’t been done before. Model builders tested a scaled X-Wing and a Y-Wing both of which didn’t do better than a 100 ft of lift before the thrust ripped them apart.
Not surprisingly though an A-Wing type cylindrical model made it a whole lot higher.
GREAT FUN to watch – we’ve got a montage video below – Enjoy!

Apparently the runaway success of the special edition of Serenity has led to talk of a Serenity sequel.
Alan Tudyk (he’s the dude that played the pilot Walsh and got speared by a Reaver) told movie site that a sequel may happen.
“They had to put the new DVD out because they’ve been selling out of the other one [the DVD that isn’t the ‘Collectors Edition’] and so Universal’s like ‘So, let’s do another one’”, he says, adding “And now… there’s now a chance there’s going to be another movie”.]
Let’s hope they call it Return of the Browncoats or something like that and have it be a full out battle with the browncoats taking back what they lost at Serenity.
Firefly was cut short by Fox and was not properly marketed as a movie by Universal – maybe a direct to DVD flick is the answer – i don’t know. All i know is that Firefly fans WANT MORE.
Stargate Atlantis 4×2 Lifeline : R.I.P Dr. Weir? October 8, 2007

What a great episode. They get the ZPM and save Atlantis but lose Dr. Weir – or do they?
We all knew that Weir would be losing command of Atlantis this year -the way she has left leaves lost of possibilities for her return.
Maybe Weir will be a Stargate version of Picard’s Locutus – but this time her mission is leading the replicators against the wraith as opposed to the assimiliation or destruction of humanity. Time will tell.
Not sure why Stargate Command left Atlantis without a commander at the end o fthis episode we all know that Col.Carter (Amanda Tapping) takes over…guess there needs to be some kind of dramatic twist that needs to occur first.

Star Trek XI may not be in theatres until xmas of 2008, but that doesn’t mean that trekkers/trekkies need to wait that long to see Trek on the big screen.
Real Classic Trek too.
The original episode – The Menagerie is being aired in full HD super special effect goodness across the US and Canada. The showing is a one day event in honor of the HD-DVD release of Star Trek Season One.
No question that the re-mastered Star Trek is awesome. but on the big screen.
WOW.

For those that don’t have the stomach to watch Flash Gordon or are outside the US and are blocked by the braniacs at SciFi.com (that block everyone from outside the US from seeing some of their videos)…
The first Razor preview isn’t much too look at but for here it is for what it’s worth. Young Admiral Adama as a nugget ..in the first Cylon war with his ‘bunk buddy’
Pirated Stargate Atlantis Season 4 Episodes – Have No Special Effect Sounds October 5, 2007
Posted by showmescifi in piracy, Sci Fi, science fiction, sciencefiction, scifi, stargate, stargate atlantis, TV.4 comments
First off – piracy is bad. No one should pirate or illegally download or distribute pirate versions of TV shows and ShowMeSciFi certainly doesn’t support or encourage the practice.
That said – it happens, it’s out there now and that’s reality.
It has come to our attention through anonymous sources (privacy of the press and all that) that there are pirate version of Stargate Atlantis Season 4 available for download before they air.
So far it has just been 4×1 Adrift and 4×2 Lifeline. Apparently they’re pre-broadcast copies (not iTunes) and..get this…they’re missing all the sound effects for the special effects.
So no sounds for things like drone fire from a jumper, background theme and even stuff like announcements over the Atlantis comm system.
You know it’s only $1.99 an episode to buy from iTunes of Amazon Unbox but hey a buck is a buck. Personally speaking, I like sound effects.

Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw Yoda?
StarWars.com has a little tutorial up on their site now – for the clone wars animated version of yoda.
It looks easy enough and with a steady hand you should be able to do it (we could). But it’s only one pose…maybe next time they’ll add him in with a lightsaber.
Want to try it yourself? Check it out.
Sputnik – How Science Fueled SciFi Dreams and Failed October 4, 2007

It was 50 years ago that Sputnik hit the Earth’s outer atmosphere and became the first man made object orbit the Earth.
Yes it kicked off the Space race.
Yes it fueled that fantasies of countless science fiction fans
But the legacy of Sputnik was that unmanned robotic satellites lead the way – its the same today 50 years later.
50 years ago I doubt that there were few people that didn’t think humans would now be living in Space. Beyond the 8 humans on the International Space Station – that’s just not happening.
Sputnik made us think that we could escape the bounds of the Earth and fly above it. Reality is we can’t because we can’t afford it.
What Sputnik represents is the great antoganist – there is no such thing today and hasn’t been for far too long in the space game. Without an antagonist and a race of some sort SciFi dreams will never leave up to science reality.
Bionic Woman 1×2 Paradise Lost – October 4, 2007

Last weeks Bionic Woman Pilot was a great episode – this weeks episode – Paradise Lost – not so much.
The show was weak, trite and contrived and for whatever reason had more commercials than actually air time.
There was little action here that was dramatic and the show just plodded along with little fealing and no real plot that wasn’t totally obvious.
The only interesting side note on this show was when Jamie (Michelle Ryan) goes into the house in Paradise where she here’s something and there on the TV is Battlestar Galactica.
I hope the producers kick this show up a notch with real plot and better acting soon..otherwise this show will have a very short life.
Battlestar Galactica Razor Flashbacks Airing During Flash Gordon October 3, 2007

How do you get real SciFi fans to watch THE WORST SCIFI SHOW ON TV? (that would be Flash Gordon)…you tease them with little bits of the most anticipated SciFi TV event – the November release of the two hour telemovie Battlestar Galactica Razor.
Why would ANYONE watch Flash Gordon otherwise? I can’t imagine it being extended beyond the 22 episodes that apparently have already been ordered.
Back to the flashbacks…these are the same type of things that SciFi did last years with the Resistance webisodes…we’ve been hearing about them for a little while now but now we know where they will first appear.
If you haven’t read about Razor – check out this earlier post on ShowMeSciFi.com with the teaser trailer.
Star Trek’s George Takei Gets His Own Asteroid October 2, 2007

As the helmsman of the Starship Enteprise, Mr Sulu flew past many asteroids.
Now, George Takei (the actor who played Sulu) is getting an actual bona fide asteroid named after him.
WOW.
Last week the Committee on Small Body Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union approved the name “7307 Takei” for the asteroid previously labeled “1994 GT9.” The Takei reference will be used in the scientific community to identify this minor body from now on, presumably forever.
Asteroid 7307 Takei is approximately 5 miles in diameter, located in an orbit ranging between 2.5 and 3.0 AUs from the Sun in the mid-solar system asteroid belt (an AU is the distance from the Sun to the Earth).
“I am honored, indeed transported to the galaxies, to know that my name has been assigned to an astronomical object in our solar system,” Takei told STARTREK.COM. “I am yet to come down to Earth.”

The Republic, Mandalorians, Zayne Carrick and Lucien all come face to face in this issue (the situation was setup in issue #19)
Finally after 20 issues Master Lucien is in the same room as Zayne who he has been hunting the whole time ..and what does Lucien do?
Whack him with his lightsaber of course.
And finally 7 issues after he first gets his fancy cortosis arm things (which he got in issue # 13 ) Zayne uses them for what they were intended. Lucien strikes and Zayne stops him with his forearms…AWESOME
What is Jarael’s secret? I don’t know but I’m curious – and that’s a good thing. KOTOR has emerged from the depths and is now a legitimately good and consistent series.

In its fourth season …Stargate Atlantis has now got to be the finest SciFi show on TV.
The season 4 premiere titled ‘Adrift’ was really solid..with all the elements that make Atlantis great..namely continuous failures that the crew someone don’t quite get out off..and interesting twists that really make you go ..HUH.
For example..they finally clear the asteroids..but DANG one got through and took out the hyperdrive.
They finally fix the hyperdrive and..DANG..too late they don’t have enough ZPM power.
And the twist?
The whole point of why Atlantis left the Atlantis world was to escape the replicators…so what do these braniacs do? They come up with a plan to go to the replicator homeworld to steal their ZPMs.
BRILLIANT.
Oh and great to see Jewel Staite really take over the Doctors role (which she’s had since 3×20) and AWESOME to see Col.Carter too.
A New DAWN For NASA September 27, 2007

NASA’s Dawn spacecraft took of this morning Cape Canaveral on its way to check out a pair of asteriods.
NASA itself has called the extremely efficient space craft – The Prius of space travel –
“Dawn has risen, and the spacecraft is healthy,” said the mission’s project manager Keyur Patel of JPL in a statement. “About this time tomorrow [Friday morning], we will have passed the moon’s orbit.”
Dawn’s 4.8-billion-kilometer (3-billion-mile) odyssey includes exploration of asteroid Vesta in 2011 and the dwarf planet Ceres in 2015. These two icons of the asteroid belt have been witness to much of our solar system’s history. By using Dawn’s instruments to study both asteroids, scientists more accurately can compare and contrast the two. Dawn’s science instrument suite will measure elemental and mineral composition, shape, surface topography, and tectonic history, and will also seek water-bearing minerals. In addition, the Dawn spacecraft and how it orbits Vesta and Ceres will be used to measure the celestial bodies’ masses and gravity fields.
Sounds like one heck of a trip to me.

Not bad..
Not bad at all.
The series premiere of the new Bionic Woman was a solid show. Katee Sackhoff is an awesome fembot, fearsome and maniacal and in my view – stole the show.
My favorite parts of the show both involved Sackhoff..showing her true cylon …er fembot colors.. The first was when Sackhoff shot Jamie Sommers boyfriend – the special effects of sommers bionic eye tracking the bullet and seeing the fembot…WOW awesome.
The second highlight was when Sommers met Sackhoff for a bionic woman battle – and just before they get started – Sackhoff calls for a – TIME OUT!! ha! brilliant.
Well i say TIME IN for Bionic Woman. Michelle Ryan(the former east-ender) was also solid and believable – though hey she’s no Lindsay Wagner.

ThoughT that the only people at Duke looking for ‘naked’ were the Duke Rugby team? (i know…bad taste..)
Turns out not all Black Holes are actually – well..black.
Apparently research from Duke University think there is a way to determine whether some black holes are not actually black.
“It would show that nature has surprises even weirder than black holes,” said Arlie Petters, a Duke professor of mathematics and physics in a statement.
Since no one has even measured the core of a black hole it has been impossible to actually determine if they were in fact all black. The Duke team has a plan to figure it out.Working with research at the University of Cambridge they figure that a black hole could be shed of its event horizon and become a naked singularity if its angular momentum — an effect of its spin — is greater than its mass.
…I’m not an astrophysicist but if a black hole’s center of mass is a black dwarf that has so much gravity that all light gets sucked in..i don’t see how a naked singularity could exist unless of course..the dwarfs gravity is somehow..incomplete..
Anyways..if you’re interested in the full story check out the Duke site

Though Dark Horse just officially announced Star Wars Vector in a press release this week – it looks like Star Wars Legacy author John Ostrander has already made his thoughts known about the cross-overl.
Apparently Ostrander has pledged that there will be no flow walking!! (WHEW!)
no word on how the characters will (or won’t) travel between time periods or how the periods will actually be connected.
Also according to Ostrander the idea is to attract more readers, even though Star Wars is selling well.
Are we desperate for new readers? No. LEGACY, for example, is selling well. Would we like MORE readers? You bet. Everyone publishing comics would. You SW fans are swell; I love you guys — but if we’re going to attract new readers, we need to go where those readers are and say “Hi”. Non-SW readers; we want them to find out that these are just good comics PERIOD. How do we do that? Best way would be to tell one heck of a good story. We believe we have one.
VECTOR will provide a good jumping on point for new readers in all the books. Are we forgetting the readers that came to the dance with us? Not at all. Can we make it work? Oh yeah. Do I think you’ll like it? Most of you — yeah.
Count ShowMeSciFi.com in as a FAN for sure. With Ostrander at the helm we have nothing to fear. I suspect we’ll be looking at some ancient Sith or Jedi item or event as the cornerstone that carries through all the titles – sort of like rift in Star Trek All Good Things Must Come To An End – wouldn’t that be awesome?
