Terra Nova: What Lies in the Badlands? It’s the BERMUDA TRIANGLE PEOPLE!! December 27, 2011

Terra Nova’s first (and likely last) season is now done. The two hours season/series finale was a fun tour-de-force with all the great element that make this show work.

dinosaurs, heroism, a little sexual tension..the dad that won’t leave his kids..

But let’s cut to the chase…

What is in the Badlands? They found the remains of an 18th century ship?…and the Phoenix people all run to it when they thought they were cut off from the future?

It has to be the BERMUDA TRIANGLE or some other kind of second gate/portal to the future.

Yeaah it’s that obvious.

Star Wars Agent of the Empire: Dark Horse? Srsly? You’re doing this instead of Legacy?? December 18, 2011

Ever since John Ostrander revealed he would be working on a new series – after the greatest Dark Horse Star Wars comic of all time — Legacy — we’ve been excited about his new project.

After reading it – we’re interested, but a bit underwhelmed.

Agent of the Empire is essentially a James Bond kind of character working for the Empire.

Ok that’s alright, but he’s a stick figure of a character (so far) without much personality.

That artwork is passable and not up to Legacy standards yet either.

And from a canon perspective – when did we find out that Han Solo went to the Imperial Academy? somehow i missed that before…a neat twist though and seeing a younger Han Solo makes this book almost worthwhile.

So long story short, empire’s agent is hunting down bad apples in the Empire…..

Sure we’ll keep reading this – it’s only a five issue series after all – but the premise isn’t nearly as strong as the previous generation of Star Wars titles and so far, neither is the plot, artwork or characters.

Star Trek Enterprise: The Romulan War: To Brave the Storm December 18, 2011

We weren’t particularly big fans of Enterprise when it was on TV…but we have been big fans of the Romulan War series, beginning with Kobyashi Maru which is a FANTASTIC book.

That story continued in The Romulan War – which similarly was a great read..so yeah we had high expectation for To Brave The Storm and Michael Martin delivers.

This is a real conclusion to the Romulan War saga…and a more fitting end to Star Trek Enterprise than the crap that showed up on TV.

We get some real insight into the Romulan Star Empire of the day and Vulcans too…

But perhaps most importantly, we get the final resolution of the whole Trip / T’Pol situation. That resolution doesn’t come until the last page of this book, in a brilliantly crafted literary maneuver of looking back 25 years after the founding of the Federation (and the Romulan War itself).

No, I don’t know how or if any other writer could possibly now extend Enterprise – this is likely it and it’s a fitting end.

We’re always looking for neat Star Wars vids here on ShowMeSciFi – we recently came across really cool music one. Where the musicians play Star Wars music on their cellos, while fighting lightsabers and an accordian playing Darth Vader (Mos Eisly Cantina theme no less).

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Revan – REVIEW – what a sad, sad story December 2, 2011

After playing Knights of the Old Republic we all know Revan. The Jedi that went after the Mandalorians then was turned to the dark side as Darth Revan, then back to the light to destroy Darth Malak.

But what happens after that?

That’s where the new Star Wars: The Old Republic: Revan comes in, right after those games.

The first half of this book is pure AWESOME. We see the real Revan, the human, the husband and the man.

Then by way of his friendship with the Mandalorian Candorous, we begin to see the Revan we all know from the game.  Match that up with the parallel plot of Darth Scourge on the other side ..and wow this was a book that we just could not put down. Scourge was headed the other way from the dark to the light …

until…

well (spoiler alert)…………….

Meetra (the Exile) returns to save Revan and then WTF happens? what a sad, depressing ending. This is much worse than Han Solo trapped in Carbonite. Revan was close to ending the Emperor and then instead he suffers in stasis, never knowing his son.

Then again, I suppose since this is all lead-up for the new Old Republic game what this book does is it set up the return of Revan. Since he’s not dead…it would make sense that for the Jedi one mission would be to retrieve Revan from stasis to help defeat the Sith…

Anyways…another awesome old republic book..and hey the game is out soon too…and we can hardly wait.

Sky is the sixer spy.

Wow.

We didn’t see that one coming and her mom is still alive too. That’s a great twist especially after Josh had made a deal with the Sixers too.

Now the whole Enemy Mine (remember that movie?) thing was kinda neat too, Taylor and Mira aren’t all that different…but we did learn more about the future in.2149 with the seccessionists…what was that all about?

Ok so now we know what Terra Nova is all about.

Col. Taylor had to kill his own commanding officer in order to preserve the ‘Hope’ of Terra Nova, as a new birthplace for mankind, when the reality is that it was just supposed to be a resource for the future to pillage.

We also finally understand that the Taylor’s son is the one behind the drawings on the cliff and the only one that really knows how to create a two way bridge to the future.

Sure this show progresses at a sometimes painfully slow pace, but it’s still entertaining and slowly but surely the plot is thickening. What’s not clear though is whether or not FOX has the cojones to keep this show on the air..remember this is the network that cancelled Firefly after all.

Star Wars Fate of the Jedi Ascension : REVIEW. Vestara is a Bitch November 10, 2011

The fate of the Jedi series has been up and down so far.

With Ascension we get some of the most kriffing nonesense plot elements ever and also some of the best. This book overall is a mess in terms of having any real credibility in terms of plot and dramatic progression. The again what should we have expected?

The first book in the series, Outcast saw Luke Skywalker exiled from Coruscant. Now in Ascension he’s back…and then he exiles all the Jedi from Coruscant.

The Backlash second book was ok, Allies was also ok,  Vortex was great and Conviction sucked arse.

****SPOILERS AHEAD ***************

How does Abeloth get Gavar Kai to fire on his own homeworld? that made no sense. How did Kai get others to join him? also made no sense. How and why did he end up on that other planet? Also no sense.

Vestara Killing him? Now that was great, so at least we don’t have to hear that whiny bstrd anymore.

But how do we go from the Lost Tribe wandering to having them in control of the Senate? in like what the span of a month or two? That makes no kriffing sense at all. Abeloth voted in as a Senator? well that i could see coming, but the Sith…i dunno.

The population going along with the imprisonment of Leia? I dunno about that either.

Daala magically getting her own fleet? Another pile of nonsense. But the twist where we thought Head of State Fel was dead was kinda neat.

We will say this…the book ended well. We’ve got Abeloth in control of the Senate, Vestara proving that she is a Sith Bitch after all and a showdown setup where the Jedi will come back and kiss arse.

Terra Nova – So far, so good. November 4, 2011

Long story short, we like Terra Nova.

The characters are real, the acting is great and the show holds our attention for the hour that it’s on every week.

We\ve got some decent insight into the workings of the colony in the 4 episodes we’ve seen so far..and lots of good stories about the ppl that live there.
We know about the sixers, but we don’t know what their deal is. We know that they can communicate with the future but we still have no idea what their beef is with Taylor.

As for the future..except for the first episode we’ve seen nothing. Let’s hope we see some future flashes soooner rather than later.

and PLEASE FOX DON’T SCREW THIS UP!!

sorry, but we have to admit that we had *almost* given up on Fringe. This season so far has mostly sucked with no real direction…

that is until the last couple of episodes when Peter ’emerged’ from the dead somehow…No the story doesn’t quite make sense, yet…Walter has his own set of memories about peter drowning the lake..it’s almost as if this was yet another new Earth…but it’s not.

How will all the world’s memories be restored? Was the time blip/look with the reports that Olivia encountered a sign of things to come?

NO this season doesn’t have the same entertainment value of ANY of the preceding seasons, but let’s hope FOX doesn’t kill the show entirely before they tell us WTF is going on.

No we still don’t have the live action Voltron. But that isn’t stopping fans from making their own shorts. Most really suck, but not this one.
This is as good as anything we’d likely see in the theatre – or maybe even better, since in Hollywood we always get a happy ending.

another week and another messed up episode of Fringe that leaves more questions than answers.

Peter is still missing and walter is still hearing voices – ok that’s…interesting..but come on…how long will this get stretched out for?

Aside from Peter…the whole cross-universe team up of the two olivias and two Broyles was cool..(but wait wasn’t the alternate Broyles killed by Walternate?).

Oh wait, that’s right..this season makes no frakking sense and has limited to no proper continuity with the three seasons that came before it.

We’re giving this season another week or two and then we’re giving up on this show.

Ok that was a bit… Weird.

So the two universes now kinda sorta get along ? They can cross from one universe to the other with an elevator?

Where is Walternate anyways?
Lots of Agent Lee though..but the Lee on the other side is a cooler guy..

Ok but the big question is.. Where is Peter?

has his memory been erased from both universes? And was the Watcher going to erase Walter too?

Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigation : Watching the Clock review August 24, 2011

Time travel is a constant theme in the Star Trek canon – this book is the first we’ve seen that specifically deal with the Federation’s temporal agency.

Overall the book is a decent read, though the plot with all of its time jumping, time lines and such is extremely confusing to follow along.

The entire subplot in the axis of time is a disaster and we mostly skipped those section as they were ridiculously convoluted and hard to follow.

The story does interweave nicely with timeline stuff from TNG, Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise episodes. Especially and front and center are the character of Dulmur and Lucsly (spoofs on Muldur and Scully from the Xfiles..remember that show?). Both those characters are pretty well drawn out.

We do get some real insight into the Temporal Cold War that dominated many of Star Trek Enterprise’s stories…and we finally learn the identity of the Sponsor (remember the Suliban).

A decent read, not great, but worth a bit of your….time.

Star Wars Dark Times : Out of the Wilderness part 1 REVIEW August 10, 2011

Dark Times was one of our fav Star Wars comics when it first appeared on the shelves a few years back….
Then the Dark Times came to Dark Times…and the braniacs at Dark Horse delayed issue after issue….and it became hard to follow…
That said when all the issues did come out, especially for the last Blue Harvest series, they were awesome. The art of Wheatley is second to none.

Dark Times is now back with Out of the Wilderness, penned by none other than Dark Horse’s head editor Randy Stradley. The first issue has a great pace and a good mix of three plotlines. We’ve got Vader on the hunt for Jedi Jennir, Jennir on the run…then we’ve got Bomo and crew looking for Jennir too…

And of course the art is just brilliant too.
