Ghostbusters The Other Side #4 – So that’s how it ends?! January 21, 2009

The final issue of the Ghostbusters : The Other Side series is out ..and we don’t like it (much).

The first couple of issues were ok but the big question we had was how are the Ghostbusters going to make it back to the land of the living?

This issue answers that in the lamest possible way – and in a way that makes the rest of this series a waste of time.

They find a rift and walk through – woohoo. How does that work? Doesn’t make sense.

Batman Year 100 – Is Batman Immortal? January 20, 2009

batmany100 The year is 2039 and Batman is a fugitive from the law in a time when the law is corrupt.

Batman Year 100 has art that isn’t quite what we normally like – it’s twisted and maformed in a very unapealing way but once we got into the story, the art really started to work.

Is Batman 100+ years old? hard to tell if its the exact same guy, that issue is never really addressed. The suit and the moral compass is the same though. The Gotham of 2039 is a different place, one where technology rules supreme and there is not privacy but somehow Batman is private and an enigma.

This is a classic Batman tale and one that now ranks among our favorite ever. No there is no super-villian – this is just a story about a world in which super-heroes should not exist and yet…there he is.

New Krypton races to its conclusion in this second to last issue in the New Krypton series.

Finally – we get superman fighting his family!

Supergirl vs Superman!

We get the followers of Zod fighting other Earth heroes and we get a fantastic issue of entertainment.

It’s unfortunate there is only one issue left in this series – it’s been great fun.

So that’s it for the Galaxy Quest comic book – after 5 issues.

The first issue of this series was great after that it’s been all downhill with each issue stupider than the next.

Issue #5 is so pathetic i wish i could get a refund for it.

How do our heroes save Earth? Beats me. I think it’s cause they use the word ‘maybe’  on the Judgement ship.

It just doesn’t make any sense at all.

It’s too bad too, this series started out so well, but IDW just sort left it out in the cold to twist in the wind without proper plot oversight.

Finally!!

Roland gives up the grapefruit and gives it to his father. It is totally ridiculous how long Peter David has strung this story line out…and it’s a damn shame too.

This serious is a good one but stretching out plot elements needlessly is just shameful.

That said – now we’ve got some forward motion here again and Treachery is all around.

Roland’s mom and Farson are all converging toward the climax of this series which should be a real winner.

Krifing AMAAAZING!

No – not Vector in general – but this issue in particular was hands down – INCREDIBLE. It really finished off the plot elements first laid out in part 11 last month.

After 12 issues spanning the entire Dark Horse Star Wars canon Vector comes to an end – but the Vector angle and the Muir Talisman is almost a side-show in this final issue of Vector isn’t it?

Cade is so powerful in the force that Muir lasts what? One frame? Then he’s toast. Does that make Cade the most powerful Jedi in 40,000 years??

Too bad for Celeste Morne though – I was kind of hoping that she would somehow survive – but what was that about her thinking that Zayne Carrick sent Cade for her? Nonsense!

And poor Azlyn Rae – will she be healed?

But the biggest plot dev by far – and the only one that makes Vector as a series worthwhile is the defeat of Darth Krayt.

I did not see that one coming – nor did I see Darth Wrylock’s deception either – then again that’s the Sith way isn’t it?

Will Krayt return – i’d say it’s 50/50 at this point..but at least Vector is now done so we can finally get on with the rest of the Star Wars universe!

Was Vector a success?

As a loyal Dark Horse reader – i would have read all the titles anyways. I’m not sure that it pulled in new readers – but it was neat to have some small link spanning all the Star Wars titles. In the end though, Vector fell apart and the AWESOMENESS of Legacy just blew it out of the water.

After three years, we finally have our first genuinely new plot story arc for Knights of the Old Republic – after the grand finale that was issue #35.

So, where do we begin?

It looks like Zayne is now just the ‘henchman’ in a criminal organization…no he’s not quite the bounty hunter type that Cade Skywalker is..but the basic character type isn’t all that different is it?

I hope that in this arc – we’ll start to see some Sith influences…and it will be great to see how Zayne eventually comes back into the Jedi Order – or not.

Shocking. And Shockingly good comic too.

We’ve become big Fans of the New Krypton series – it’s clearly not just business as usual for the man of steel.

The Kryptonian’s have killed humans and that’s a No No – but for some reason Alura (supergirl’s mom) doesn’t seem to care…

But the biggest plot twist of course is the Death of Zor-El – Supergirl’s father. It just seemed so sudden and brutal.

It’s the kind of quick twist that makes this New Krypton series easily one of the best Superman plot line in the last 30 years.

To be honest we haven’t been regular Superman collectors in years – but that

superman_681changed with this new storyline – Superman New Krypton – a nine issue cross-over event.

The basic story is simple – Braniac years ago captured a Kryptonian city – Kandor –

(saving it in the process) and now Superman has saved the city and 100,000 Kryptonian’s are now living on Earth.

It’s a great premise and one that challenges the notion of Superman being special (supergirl aside) – since there are now 100,000 people just like him flying around Earth.

It started off in a one issue special edition – then moved over to Superman #681 –  and then over to Action Comics #871 where we get to see more of what Kryptonian’s are really up to –

from there to Supergirl (didn’t care for that issue).

The latest issue is Superman #681 New Krypton part 6. The Kryptonian’s now actually kill humans and this is clearly a turning point. General Zod (remember him from the Superman II movie ?) still has followers loyal to him and they seem to be stirring up some trouble.

Oh and remember the Phantom Zone ? Yeaaah it’s back too.

So for this comic book fan – after years and years  of not reading Superman regularly – here I am back reading Superman again thanks to this New Krypton storyline. It’s great that anew issue is out every week – which sure makes a big difference too.

Ghostbusters : The Other Side issues 1&2 – I ain’t afraid of no ghost December 1, 2008

We all remember the classic Ghostbusters movie – but what happens after the movie?

That’s where this new comic series comes in – the basic plotline in issues 1&2 is that that Ghostbusters get ‘whacked’ and end up as Ghosts themselves.

What happens when a Ghostbuster becomes a ghost?

Good question – so far (issue 1 and 2) it’s alot of figuring out what’s going on – but i suspect that issued 3 and 4 we’ll actually see the answer appear.

Will they become ‘mortal’ again? i dunno – but i’d bet so – in any event – solid storytelling and decent art makes this a fun read.

WOWOWOWOWOWOW.

Last issue was solid but this issue was non stop cover to cover action.

What a great kriffing issue. The double cross (or maybe triple cross?) is in with the Muir Talisman and its human host vs Cade Skywalker vs. Darth Krayt vs. The Imperial Knights.

Will Karness Muir take hold of Cade? (maybe next issue) – but still seeing Krayt in this position is awesome – i doubt we’ll see the end of Krayt, but hey anything can happen.

and what about Darth Talon (aka the Sith Hottie?) SHE’S BAAACK and she still has the hots for Cade (where was Delilah Blue ?)

The artwork – always great in Legacy was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT in this issue – the cell arrangement and powerful imagery is what great storytelling and great comic books are all about.

But of course this issue is just a stepping stone to the final issue of Vector!! Vector before it hit Legacy was kinda ok – in Legacy it got real good real fast.

I suspect that Karness Muir and/or the Talisman will be destroyed – but that somehow Celeste Morne survives (but maybe i’m wrong). In any event it will bring to a close a year of wondering where this would end – and it might be the end for Krayt too.

After three years and 35 issues this is it.

Zayne is finally vindicated. It should be a moment of triumph and climax –
BUT IT’S NOT.

This is a weak issue and one that insults the loyal readers that stuck with this book for the last three years. After everything that happened to Zayne in the very first issue we expected more – a lot more.

Zayne goes into to see the Jedi council but – do we see what happens? NOPE.
Instead Hazen (who was awesome) gets nuked from orbit – which was cool – and Zayne gets cleared.

I don’t know it’s an anti-climax and a letdown. Maybe after three years of buildup – no matter what happened would have been a downer.

Will we continue to read this title? SURE – I want to see Darth Malak, Revan and the Exile.

Again very little of Roland in this book — but we know he’ll drop out of his funk soon enough.

Why Steven Deschain left his wife alive after finding out about her evil is beyond me – but now with her going back to his enemy…well we know where this will end up.

As always a riveting issue from an imagery point of view – but again one that is a bit too plodding for me with little action – and mostly plot development –

Well except for Aileen who met in the last issue – i don’t think she ends up with Roland thought that’s clearly Cort’s plan.

Let’s be frank here – Vector was just ok till it hit Legacy.

Legacy has made Vector great and this issue is proof of that fact. Celeste Morne is still the central figure but Cade’s new love interest makes things interesting as does Cade’s own relationship with the Force.

And what about Emperor Roan Fel? This is the first we’ve seen of him in months – and he’s just as evil as Krayt isn’t he?

Will the Muir Talisman take over Cade at some point? I think so. Will Cade kill Darth Krayt? That i don’t think so – but perhaps Krayt will end the Vector and the Muir Talisman forever

It’s coming to a close soon..this wasn’t the massive issue like #34 with Darth Hazen but pretty darn close.

We keep finding out more about how it was all Hazen and how Lucien Dray was a total dope all along. No surprise to Zayne but the after 34 issues it’s great to see this whole thing unravelling.

The hardest part about this story arc is because its sooo good waiting a month for the next little bit is painful.

Will the Covenant finally be destroyed at the end of this arc? I don’t see how it won’t. But the big question remains where are the Mandalorians during all of this?

FINALLY the crew get into space again..but not a whole lot happens here..till the final page.

The Thermian’s are on the way..but it looks like the humans are on there own. Overall a decent in-between issue that sets up some plot to come.

In the next issue we’ll finally see what this judgment ship is all about and who the dominatrix is that commands it. Want to take bets that Taggert has a ‘thing’ for this female destroyer of worlds?

So far this series has been a worthy successor to the GalaxyQuest movie and hey maybe this will be the basis of a sequel movie one day? We can only hope……….

Another female character! but this time it’s not a regular jilly – this time it’s a gunslinger. Aileen neice of Cort is a piece of work ain’t she?

Beyond that new character – we don’t have a whole lot going on here do we? No Roland (though his ka-tet is here) and Roland’s Father (whose face he still remembers) dispatches a few of Farson’s men (hooray!).

With this being a six issue series – i suspect that Marvel will stretch this out a bit – but I sure do hope we see a little more action next issue (and more of Aileen too).

So Vector finally hits Star Wars Legacy…but it really seems like a stretch to me..so Celeste Morne just floats in space for over a hundred years…waiting??

And Celeste hasn’t aged a day?

I dunno..it’s a really really weak link from the last Vector issue in Rebellion.

But the weak link aside — this is what Celeste was born to do…an ancient Jedi with an ancient Sith to team up against Darth Krayt and destroy the Sith..

Frankly Vector has been less than spectacular overall..but Legacy of course is awesome which no doubt will rub off on Vector..but make no mistake about it..it’s not Vector that will make Legacy better but Legacy which will make Vector better.

If Dark Horse is ever to attemp such a multi-timeline story again i hope they just do a time travel – force flow walking thing. The linear timeline here just sucks.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed (the graphic novel) REVIEW September 25, 2008

I bought the Dark Horse graphic novel version of Star Wars the Force Unleashed the week before the game came out, i started to read it before playing the game and then stopped.

What ended up happening is we wanted to see how the game compared to the graphic novel – so we as we are playing the game we’re reading the graphic novel – sort of like a recap.

The graphic novel IS NOT a direct correlation to the game play (at least not the Wii version). Bascially it’s all told from a flashback point of view by Proxy and Juno who are explaining the origins of the Rebellion to Senator Organa.

Also the ‘Secret Apprentice’ is referred to as ‘Starkiller’ the whole time too.

The story does not have all the same back and forth as the game – in particular it is completely lacking in the (multiple) trip back to Coruscant to see the Jedi Temple (fight Darth Phobos and others).

The syncronisity with the video game aside – this is one great graphic novel. It’s such a great story that tucks so neatly into the existing star wars canon.

Just like Palpatine seeded the Seperatists that led to the Clone Wars so to did he seed the Rebellion (though not with the same results he had hoped). It makes great sense.

If you’re playing the game – you will enjoy the graphic novel. If you’re not playing the game – WHAT THE FRAK IS WRONG WITH YOU?? – but you will LOVE THIS GRAPHIC NOVEL!!

All hail HAZEN!!

Or should we call this Sith spawn demon – Darth Hazen?

What an awesome storyline and one of the best pieces of cover art that I’ve seen in recent years from Dark Horse – simply amazing.

But back to the story – so it’s been this dude Hazen all along that has been pushing the direction for the Covenant?

Where did that come from? For the last two years we’ve been following this storyline and BAAAAAAAAAM now this.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great twist and this a great issue. We know have the final resolution at hand of this whole series – i wonder what will be left when this arc is done…
