What happens when New Cylons Find Old Cylons? April 6, 2007

Just because SciFi network has no new episodes of Battlestar Galactica for another 8 months doesn’t mean that their aren’t ‘new’ BSG stories being told.
The Battlestar Galactica comic series is one such outlet
The current thread in Dynamite Entertainments main BSG #7 has a wickedly cool plot line where the fleet finds an ancient antebellum Cylon fleet (that is pre-cylon war cylons – the cylons that the colonies used to fight earch other at one point and look like te ones from the classic series – By Your Command – and all that..)that ends up taking commands from Adama. He then uses the old cylons to fight the new ones.
Why can’t the TV show do stuff like that?
I guess it’s cause Mr.Moore and crew are too tied up worrying about big moral issues and frakking around with character issues rather than trying to whoop it up with some good cylon on cylon smackdown action.
AT this point, with the show off the air for 8 months, Dynamite’s BSG comics series really is the BEST BSG ticket around.
Oh and if you ever doubted that Starbuck is a Cylon…don’t. Just check out the cover (above) for issue number 7!

Star Wars Legacy is a series that just doesn’t quit. Cade Skywalker is still on the run and doesn’t make an appearance in this issue.
You might think that would be a problem – but that’s not the case at all.
Writer John Ostrander throws loyal readers are real curve with a startling revelation in this issue..
**NOT A SPOILER ALERT SINCE THE ISSUE IS ALREADY OUT BUT STILL THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING**
The female bounty hunter from Issue #9 that is also in this issue, Morrigan Corde – has a very special relationship with the person she is hunting – Cade Skywalker.
She’s he’s mother!!!
WOW.
It’s not anything that anyone could have seen coming and is proof positive that Star Wars Legacy remains the best Star Wars comic book series ever created.
The only ‘draw back’ (pun intended) in this issue is that Jan Duursema is still absent as the artist – so though the art is good – it’s not ridiculously fantastic.

Star Wars Legacy which has often been reviewed here on ShowMeScifi is one of the best comic books today and likely the best Star Wars comic book series ever created.
Set far beyond any other Star Wars series -the only lineage connection we’ve had so far is Cade Skywalker – a descendant of Luke.
But what about other Star Wars family trees? Dark Horse Editor Randy Stradley recently tackled that topic in a letter to the editor q&a.
1. Are we going to learn what happened to the Solo family of this time?
There are no plans for an exploration of the Solo lineage for the forseeable future. We’re not in denial about them, it’s just that there isn’t a place for them in the story. Yet.
2. Any chance of running into any other descendents of of any other Star Wars Characters?
Oh yes my friend. Oh, yes.
4. How long are we going to have to wait until we learn who Darth Krayt is under the mask?
The answer will be revealed in issue 15.
Jacen Solo is set to become a to be named Sith in the upcoming Star Wars Legacy of the Force Sacrifice book .
My guess is that Darth Krayt is a descendant of Jacen Solo.
Anyone want to take that bet?

Star Wars: 30th Anniversary Collection Volume 1–The Freedon Nadd Uprising Hard Cover is now out and I’ve got a copy.
Usually at ShowMeSciFi we don’t focus that much on the actual physical construction of a comic, this is an exception.
This is a GORGEOUS looking graphic novel.
Dark Horse has done an awesome job on printing this the cover is slick and elegant and the paper is just top notch. Even better is the price -they’re charging the same for this hardcover as I would have expected to pay for a regular soft-cover trade paperback.
The hardcover series is part of a 30th Anniversary thing from Dark Horse where they’re re-printed some popular stuff. Next up is Jedi vs. Sith which ShowMeSciFi has already reviewed (in the regular soft paperback edition).
Full review of the The Freedon Nadd Uprising will follow in the coming weeks.
Star Wars Legacy # 9 review March 16, 2007

This series does not disappoint.
In this issue – in which Cade Skywalker doesn’t have a line – the story is still awesome filling in the wider picture of what’s going on in the galaxy. With the Sith on Coruscant, the Galactic Alliance remnant floating about, and the true Emperor sitting at Bastion it’s alot going on.
Now the Galactic Alliance remnant may forge an alliance with the true emperor – than again they might not. Guess we’ll see what happens in issue #10.
Star Wars Legacy is Star Wars storytelling at its finest. The only small disappointment is the art in this one..but it’s another one (like issue #8) where Jan Duursema is absent and in comparison to her everyone else is second rate in my book.
Battlestar Galactica Zarek -issues 1 and 2 February 22, 2007

The first Battlestar Galactica comic series that I read from Dyanamite was decent but not dynamite (gotta love puns). Zarek is another story altogether.

IT’S DYNOMITE.
The only reason why anyone cares about Zarek in the show is because the character is played by Classic Battlestar Galactica veteran Richard Hatch. The Zarek comic dives deep into Zarek’s past and in 
the first two issues that i’ve read thus far, provides a riveting tale that kept me turning the pages.
The art in this series is also very solid, morso than in the Dynamite’s regular Battlestar Galactica comic.
This is SciFi comic book story telling at its finest and is definitely not to be missed.

I finally got around to picking up the new Battlestar Galactica comic book series from Dynamite.
Starting with issue #0 this series puts readers head first into the action. For those that haven’t been watching or following the new BSG on TV – forget about this comic you’ll be totally lost.
For those who follow the show, who just can’t get enough with a weekly fix..the comic books are good outlet.
Though i only picked up the first five issues, it get a bit confusing
since Dynamite publishes 4 or more covers for each issue. I understand why they do that but it’s not like i’m going to buy all four cover variants anyway.
The series (at least issue 0-5) take place in the middle of season two. I’m not sure and haven’t seen any evidence that states that the comic book is bona fide BSG canon. That aside the first story arc is kinda cool.
The Cylons were built by man. We know that. But we’ve not seen Cylons take commands (By Your Command) from humans. When Galactica stumbles upon an ancient Cylon fleet they end up as ‘slaves’ to the BSG crew and Adama.
There is also an interesting twist about how many Cylon models there are.
In the comic there are alot more models than in the show. Zak Adama in fact is one such Cylon re-creation. 
I’m not sure where it’s all headed but it is an interesting enough story line.
Art on the other hand is another story altogether.
Simply put i don’t care for the art in this series so far. Adama doesn’t look like Adama, President Roslyn is portrayed like Caprica Six which makes no sense to me. Overall characters don’t even come close to what they look like on TV, not even in a stylized comic book way.
Will I continue to buy BSG comics? Sure, i need as much BSG as I can find. But if you’re not a diehard, you could probably live without this series.
Star Wars : Legacy # 8 – The Sith Reclaim the Empire February 18, 2007

Just when I thought that Star Wars Legacy couldn’t get any better along comes this issue. It’s a flashback issue occurring before the events of the first issue – way before . We finally get to see how the Sith ended up in control of the Empire after the defeat of the Galactic Alliance, we also see that the rightful Emperor Roan Fel was not at fault for the massacre of the Jedi on Ossus.
The story is just awesome. If you’ve never read Legacy – this is an excellent issue to get started with.
The art ..well it’s not up to the same level as the first seven issues. There is a good reason for that..the art is not done by Jan Duursema. The Sith (particularly Darth Krayt) look kinda lame and overall it’s not the jaw dropping magnificence that the Duursema provides.
Apparently Jan Duursema is working ahead on the next story arc – so we the fans have to settle with second rate artists until her return…considering how awesome the story is…and with the expectation that Duursema is returning I suppose it’s a fair trade off.
The first issue of Legacy revealed the facts of the attack on the Jedi Academy on Ossus and of the betrayal of Emperor Roan Fel by Darth Krayt and the Sith. Now it is time to learn of the machinations and of the secret alliances behind those actions.
Grand Moff Nyna Calixte supervises intelligence gathering for the Empire. Darth Maladi does the same for the Sith. Together they could form an unbeatable team, able to sway the course of a galaxy. That is, if they don’t destroy one another first!
From the ambush of the Galactic Alliance’s fleet to Roan Fel’s narrow escape from assassination, the true story of the Sith overthrow of the Empire can at last be told!

My own personal hunt for Aurra Sing has led me to Star Wars Outsider.
Aurra Sing isn’t the major player in this trade paperback but she is still quite central – it’s more about another lost Jedi the ‘Outlander’ who unites the Tusken raiders of Tatooine.
A solid work with great art and a pretty decent story to boot.
Ki-Adi-Mundi’s first assignment after joining the Jedi Council will take him back to the fearsome desert wastelands of Tatooine. The Jedi Council has tracked a long wayward and powerful Jedi, Sharad Hett of the Sand People, to the backwater world, and it’s up to Ki to find him and convince him to return. Only two things stand in his way: the vicious krayt dragon of Tatooine and the Jedi-slaying bounty hunter Aurra Sing! Ki has little choice but to ask for help from the slimiest crime lord of them all, Jabba the Hutt — and Jabba’s aid always comes with a price! Outlander is full-throttle, white-knuckle Episode I-era adventure!

The Hunt for Aurra Sing
The first time I ever heard the name Aurra Sing was in the recent Star Wars Legacy of the Force Tempest novel in which Aurra is hired to kill Tenel Ka.
I then went on a hunt of my own a Hunt for Aurra Sing.
What a graphic novel phew. Great writing, great art and fantastic pacing.
She’s not a sith, but not exactly a Dark Jedi either (or is she?) But she is all business in the comic. I’m going to go on another hunt now and track down other Aurra Sing materials to flesh out my collection.
Midtown Comics New York City – lots of stuff but no bag and board February 14, 2007

I found myself in New York City for work this week – and hey it’s new comics Wednesday so I headed to Midtown Comics on 40th and 7th Ave in Times Square.
BUSY BUSY BUSY – and this was in the middle of a freaking snow storm too.
More comics than my local home town seller that’s for sure…but something was missing.
I bought a large stash of comics (including many that i’ll end up reviewing on ShowMeSciFi) but NO BAG AND BOARD!
Maybe i’m spoiled or something but i’m used to getting a bag and board with all new comics. It’s just part of the service.
So Midtown comics…nice store lots of stuff but you guys SUCK and fail in my book for real comic customer service. Show some respect and bag and board your comics and respect that your customers are collectors and not children.

It wasn’t all that long ago that I reviewed Darth Bane : Path of Destruction . Little did I know at the time that the book was little more than a novelization of this comic.
Star Wars Jedi vs. Sith is the graphic novel (or trade paperback) that collects the six issue Dark Horse comic book series. The art is manga’ish and blocky but it is engaging.
The story well – it’s fantastic.
Jedi vs. Sith tells the same story that fills the back half of Darth Bane : Path of Destruction – A thousand years ago the Sith were many and they battled endlessly with the Jedi Army of Light. Lord Kaan ruled the Sith Brotherhood of Darkness and sought the destruction of Lord Hoth and his Jedi followers.
Darth Bane emerges as THE SITH and the Jedi walk away thinking they’ve ended the Sith forever.
In comparison to the book – which i read first even though the comic book predates it by some 5 years – the comic book is quick and fast paced. The book is a different type of engagement, looking deeper into Darth Bane the man, the sith and the motivations behind things. The comic is…well it’s a comic. You just can’t get the same sort of introspection and development (not typically at least).
I am glad i’ve read both though as the experience of reading a comic is very very different than reading a novel. It’s not quite like taking two viewpoints of the same history, more like looking at two versions of the same painting. The biggest addition in the comic book are the kids – only one whom (Rain) even makes an appearance in the novel.
Apparently Dark Horse Comics (the publisher) also thinks that this is a landmark graphic novel and they are re-issuing it as a hardcover as part of the their 30th anniversary
celebrations for Star Wars. It’s expect to be available April 4th of 2007. Personally I don’t have a problem with the softcover (and it’s cheaper). You can click on the first cover image to see if Dark Horse still has any (of the cheaper version) avail.
Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic issue # 13 February 9, 2007

Issue 13 kicks of a new story arc that may have some real legs to it. The last story arc concluded in issue 12 . Basically what happens is Zayne Carrick sticks with Gryph the con artist while the others leave on the Last Resort.
Zayne and Gryph ultimately end up with a ship that takes them right back into the thick of things with the Republic Fleet.
Not a bad story but not the best yet either. Another incremental tale that gets things going without being overly dramatic itself.
Maybe I’m being a bit harsh…the story does end with an assasin droid (as seen on the cover) revealing itself to the crew of the Last Resort…oohhh I wonder if they’ survive…guess we’ve got to wait till the next issue to find out.
AND I suppose the funkly lightsaber repelling arm braces that Zayne ends up are kinda cool too. If Luke had a pair of those he probably wouldn’t have lost his arm.

Clint Eastwood tells the other side of the Iwo Jima story in Japanese – so why not get the ‘other’ side of the Star Trek Universe in the ‘original’ Klingon?
That’s exactly what’s going to happen this coming April.
IDW Publishing which is the current licensse of Star Wars in comics has announced Star Trek®: Klingons: Blood Will Tell will be available in Klingon (with English subtitles).
While Starfleet personnel of the 24th century view Klingons as their allies, in the Star Trek universe of Captain Kirk’s time, the Klingons were always viewed as being on the wrong side of their struggles with the United Federation of Planets. As a species, they were allegedly responsible for some reprehensible acts (resulting in some classic TV episodes and movies), but were they really in the wrong? Or did they just not have a fair chance to present their side of the story?
With the new series coming out…it might be a good time to catch up on those Klingon language lessons (translations are never accurate).

Dark Horse Rising: It’s No Longer Just A DC And Marvel Universe
The Golden Age of comics was dominated by DC Comics, home to Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. The Silver Age belonged to Marvel with Spiderman, the Hulk, Fantastic 4 and Captain America.
Does the third age of comics belong to Dark Horse?
Regular readers of ShowMeSciFi know all about Dark Horse Comics. They are after all the publisher of all Star Wars Comics including of course the ‘new stuff’ like Legacy, KOTOR and Dark Times.

Star Wars: Dark Times issues 1 and 2 (review) January 29, 2007

I just picked up both issues #1 and 2 of Star Wars : Dark Times.
Apparently issue #2 was DELAYED. Issue #1 came out in early november while Issue #2 came out late last week (Jan 24). Starting a new series with such a gap is hardly a way to start a series.
But for me it’s not too bad since i got both issues a the same time and didn’t have to wait two months for an issue.
Now on to the good stuff and make no mistake about it, Dark Times is good stuff.
Plot is a bit predictable given the time period – which sometime close after the end of Episode III with jedi on the run and vader trying to figure out wtf is going on and what he’s supposed to be doing.
The artwork is spectacular with a photorealistic airbrush kind of approach that give this title a very sleek and somewhat unique look in the modern Star Wars pantheon of KOTOR and Legacy.
I am looking forward to issue #3 but i’m putting Dark Horse on notice – if it’s two months late I’m not likely to buy it.
Star Wars : Knights of the Old Republic #12 January 29, 2007

This issue is the second (and final) in a mini-story arc that began in Knights of the Old Republic #11. Basically Zayne’s dad gets kidnapped by pair of Hammerheads in the last issue and in this issue Zayne rescues him.
It’s really that simple (and relatively lame).
I suppose it does help for basic character and overall plot development to know that Zayne :
a: Has a father
b: his father is sympathetic to him
c: The Jedi know both a and b.
Beyond that this issue doesn’t offer much, but for regular readers of KOTOR (like myself) it’s all part of the master plan i guess – and like every other issue – a Must Read.
I’m looking forward to issue #13 already though just to see what the next story arc will bring. We haven’t seen the Sith yet, maybe they’ll finally make their intro.

I’ve been a loyal reader of Legacy since issue O. By far and away this is the best issue of Legacy yet – and that is saying alot.
Action, plot, fantastic art – this issue has got it all.
As the end of the first major story arc in Star Wars Legacy it is a fitting conclusion and a natural end. Cade makes his choice and as the cover of the issue implies he follows his destiny. I’m a little surprised he left his pirate buddies behind on Bastion but no doubt Ostrander will find a way in his brilliant script to reconnect them and i suspect that the next time they’ll be an opposing end of a blaster and/or lightsaber.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic #11
A new two-part story begins as fugitive Padawan Zayne Carrick and the crew of the Last Resort devise a plan to nab some much needed cash. On the banking world of Telerath they set their plot into motion unaware the bounty on their heads is about to catch up to them. Yet there’s more going on than the schemers or their hunters realize, and when it all blows sky-high an unexpected reunion will throw Zayne’s life on the run into question.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW:
Alright the first story arcs were pretty cool and now we’re setup for 2 issue story arc which is coool since it’s not too stretch out.
Wanna take a guess at what the ‘unexpected’ reunion is? Come on..take a guess….
Alright i’ll just come out and tell ya. It’s Zayne’s dad, but we don’t get to that until the last page.
A bit of a waste but hey it kind of does leave you wanting for more…I for one can hardly wait to read issue #12!
