Stargate Atlantis 4×4 Doppelganger – October 20, 2007

Doppelganger of course is a term for someone that has the same name as another person – but isn’t the same person…
Having Col. Sheppard ..or EVIL Sheppard as was the case at the doppelganger here was neat..since he’s usually goody two shoes….not as good as say a mirror universe Sheppard…but still solid fun..
Weak episode overall though as we still know nothing about the crystal entity? what did it want? why was it trying to get into their heads?? All the crystal was used for here was as a plot mechanism for EVIL sheppard and not as a way to expand the knowledge of the Pegasus Galaxy – and that just plain sucks.

Quite possibly the rarest of all Star Wars ships are Imperial Star Destroyers…
As part of ShowMeSciFi.com’s irregular look at the best of SciFi auctions on eBay we came across this auction of 2 Imperial Star Destroyer : 1x Super Star Destroyer and 1x Star Destroyer
and the Rebel Blockade Runner.
Bidding started at $149.99 for this..and i don’t expect it to go for less than $200 but hey someone might end up with a real deal here.
**UPDATE** Bidding closed at $332.90 for this!!
check out the auction yourself – and hey if you win brag about it here.
Star Wars Dark Times # 5 : Dinner October 19, 2007

Dark Times is easily one of the most depressing and truly Dark series in the Star War Universe ever published.
It’s just sad what happens..and there really are no happy comic book endings in this comic book.
This first story arc ends in the worst possible way – i was truly shocked and horrified by it – and couldn’t eat for nearly a day…
But i suppose that’s just good comic book writing – not sure that it’s for me as i’m not much for horror –
I’m not going to ‘spoil’ it here for anyone but let me just say this – it’s not a happy ending.
Chris Pine is Star Trek XI’s Kirk October 18, 2007

Chris Pine is now officially confirmed as Kirk in Star Trek XI.
I’m not sure that i’m happy about that…i really think it would have been a whole lot cooler if a name A LIST actor got the role. Pine doesn’t inspire a whole lot of confidence in me.
But hey filming starts in a few weeks and they had to lock it down – so good luck Chris Pine and I hope you do better than Scott Bakula.

Dammit Jim I’m a Dr! Not a second rate actor who’s only real claim to fame is Lord of the Rings!
Karl Urban will be Bones in Star Trek XI.
I truly admired DeForest Kelly as Bones – and i remember the day he died well – because i was truly sad.

5 years…..that’s it and then Michelle Ryan is toast….who’s to say that the show will last that long or not though…
Lifespan was easily the best episode yet – now we’ve got lots of overlapping plot elements which makes this a very deep and rich show from a story point of view…
That said – the new ‘Oscar’ is a MAJOR weak link in this show…he just sucks. The fact that we don’t have an entire army of evil fembots (yet) also is something i’d like to see..
overall though…good stuff. Jamie is really coming into her own…

Blasted Biggs..Where Are You?
In the original version of Star Wars ANH we never really know who Biggs is beyond his appearance in the Death Star Assault. In Special Edition – we get an extra 2 mins where Luke greets Biggs on Yavin 4 before launching. Beyond that Biggs is just a footnote in the main Star Wars movies….but thanks to the Expanded Universe and Dark Horse Comics..the full story of Biggs Darklighter is known.
We recently picked up the Star Wars 30th Anniversary Volume 7 Biggs Darklighter – and WOW what a great read with a solid story and top notch art.
I had never really though much about Biggs before – but after reading his full story I’ll never watch those fatefull last few minutes of his life in the Death Star trench the same way again.
Biggs Darklighter lived and breathed, taught Luke how to fly – joined the Rebel Alliance and helped them to get X-Wing Fighters (among other things).
This special 30th anniversary hardcover story is a MUST HAVE for Star Wars fans and is easily one of the best volumes yet in this incredible graphic novel collection series.

I finally got around to watching an episode of Journeyman last night…and I was somewhat underwhelmed.
The basic premise is that the dude travels back and forth in time to ‘fix’ things.
It sounds alot like Quantum Leap – but it’s not even close. The time transitions are awkward and confusing – which i understand they should be..but it makes it difficult as a viewer to follow along.
Also there is no ‘catch’ no real rationale behind the jumps other than to – set things right.
It’s a concept that Quantum Leap did much better.

This series is pretty now pretty frakin good.
With no real Battlestar Galactica on save for the Razor flashbacks – the comics are our only BSG refuge and this series is now really coming into its own.
The best part of this issue is how well it ties in with what we already know from the series. This could easily be canon.
Issue #2 marks the end of the first mini-arc and is a real solid issue that shows Adama being the stand up man we know him to do.

Blog Action Day : SciFi is Littered With Tales of Worlds Gone Wrong October 15, 2007

So today is Blog Action Day with the theme being about the environment…considering that Al Gore just won the Nobel Peace price for his work – (and Al Gore of course famously once claimed that he invented the Internet) – i guess this makes sense.
How many SciFi classics deal with a world (Earth or otherwise) that has gone bad because of environmental disaster? The list is certainly very very very very long. It’s actually almost a cliched theme in SciFi actually.
The fact that now in 2007 it is front and center is just a testament to the fact that SciFi leads the way for society and that beyond being great entertainment – there are things that we humans today should be doing to save this planet before it is destroyed.
Then again a big meteor could come loose from the Oort cloud and head towards earth (as it did 200 million years ago) – in which case, we’ve got bigger problems to deal with.
The answer of course is colonization of worlds beyond Earth. The time will come when the Earth becomes uninhabitable – that shouldn’t mean that life as we know it and that human life should then cease to exist too.

Another solid episode – once again Ronon shows his true colors AND
Col. Carter FINALLY TAKES COMMAND!!! Hurray!
We also get a nice little cameo from T’ealc. Did we know before this episode that the Wraith could make humans live forever? I think so..but apparently that won’t help heal flesh wounds (so what good is it really?)

Metroid Prime 3 Corruption : Not Great SciFi But Great Gaming October 13, 2007

Big bad weird looking dudes spreading seeds all over the galaxy and you’ve got to stop them. That’s the basic premise of Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.
The Corruption part is this phazon stuff that feeds both the bad guys and the hero Samus Aran ..it gives you great power but if you overload you corrupt.
Basic SciFi stuff but the gaming side is SOLID. Moving about with the Wiimote and Numchuck is awesome, slick and seemless. The Metroid 3 gaming experience really is unlike any other first person shooter ever created. It’s that much fun.
My basic issues with this are the same basic issues i generally have with all FPS console games : You can’t save on demand and there is always a BOSS that you need to eliminate to make it to the next level. Sure that’s expected but COME ON…that’s just so boring.
That said Metroid Prime 3 Corrupoint is highly recommended as a must have…but I suspect I’ll be trading mine back well before Star Wars The Force Unleashed is available – though Samus is cool and all – Vader’s Secret apprentice is going to be a whole lot cooler. Though Samus has some neat weapons…Samus doesn’t have a lightsaber either.

Mr. Sulu engage Warp factor 5 – we’re going to White Castle!
John Cho, star of cult movie favorite “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle has now been signed up to play Sulu in Star Trek XI.
I think this is great news – George Takei is no comedian but getting a bit of a comic edge in the younger Sulu is a great thing….you never know where a wayward NCC-1701 could end up…

Juno Set for Jupiter Flyby in 2016. October 11, 2007

NASA is hard a work on its next Jupiter exploration craft called Juno.
This week NASA settled on an Atlas 5 model 551 rocket, provided by Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services, to launch the $700 million Juno mission in August 2011.
According to NASA’s mission page:
Using a spinning, solar-powered spacecraft, Juno will make maps of the gravity, magnetic fields, and atmospheric composition of Jupiter from a unique polar orbit. Juno will carry precise high-sensitivity radiometers, magnetometers, and gravity science systems . Juno’s 32 orbits over 11 days will sample Jupiter’s full range of latitudes and longitudes. From its polar perspective, Juno combines in situ and remote sensing observations to explore the polar magnetosphere and determine what drives Jupiter’s remarkable auroras.
Personally I think this sounds VERY LAME – especially in comparison to what the Galileo probe accomplised with 1980’s era technology. Apparently NASA is really aiming low these days. What ever happened to the idea of long term orbits examining all of the Jovian system? Or like Galileo some kind of atmospheric probe?
NOPE. NASA may know the way to Jupiter – but the US Space Agency apparently has lost its adventurous ways.

Alright so Eric Bana will be one of the bad guys in Star Trek XI.
We don’t know yet whether he’ll be a human/Romulan/Klingon/ or some other species.
We don’t know if there will be another bad guy in the movie either.
We do know that it’s classic era stuff – so Klingon or Romulan would still be my guesses..
But we’ll have to wait some time yet till we know for sure. Star Trek XI doesn’t hit the theaters till Xmas 2008.
Oh and let’s not forget …they still have to cast KIRK!

With so much of the Sarah Corbis (Katee Sackhoff) fembot in this episode ..the show could easily have been called Bionic Women.
An o.k episode with some nice character development and a wee bit of action. But the premise and the basic plot complications are starting to get thin. It sure would be neat if there was a whole army of fembots just like in the original show…and we here at ShowMeSciFi love Katee Sackhoff…but she should have some accomplices too.
