YES it sucks that there is no Trek on TV today. And Yes we think the new movies suck too…but with 45 years of TV and movies …we’ve got lots of re-runs to enjoy.

Star Trek: Department of Temporal Investigation : Watching the Clock review August 24, 2011

Time travel is a constant theme in the Star Trek canon – this book is the first we’ve seen that specifically deal with the Federation’s temporal agency.

Overall the book is a decent read, though the plot with all of its time jumping, time lines and such is extremely confusing to follow along.

The entire subplot in the axis of time is a disaster and we mostly skipped those section as they were ridiculously convoluted and hard to follow.

The story does interweave nicely with timeline stuff from TNG, Voyager, DS9 and Enterprise episodes. Especially and front and center are the character of Dulmur and Lucsly (spoofs on Muldur and Scully from the Xfiles..remember that show?). Both those characters are pretty well drawn out.

We do get some real insight into the Temporal Cold War that dominated many of Star Trek Enterprise’s stories…and we finally learn the identity of the Sponsor (remember the Suliban).

A decent read, not great, but worth a bit of your….time.

Star Wars Dark Times : Out of the Wilderness part 1 REVIEW August 10, 2011

Dark Times was one of our fav Star Wars comics when it first appeared on the shelves a few years back….
Then the Dark Times came to Dark Times…and the braniacs at Dark Horse delayed issue after issue….and it became hard to follow…
That said when all the issues did come out, especially for the last Blue Harvest series, they were awesome. The art of Wheatley is second to none.

Dark Times is now back with Out of the Wilderness, penned by none other than Dark Horse’s head editor Randy Stradley. The first issue has a great pace and a good mix of three plotlines. We’ve got Vader on the hunt for Jedi Jennir, Jennir on the run…then we’ve got Bomo and crew looking for Jennir too…

And of course the art is just brilliant too.

Doctor Who: Season Six, Part 1 is done (no we haven’t reviewed them all yet but don’t worry we will..)
The good ppl at the BBC are already teasing us with the second half of the Season 6 and as has been the case in the last few seasons, the end will (hopefully) tie right back to the first episode…you know..

THE ONE WHERE THE DOCTOR GET SHOT BY AN ASTRONAUT AND DIES.

yeaah that one..

Before he gets around that…looks like he’s got a few more monsters to deal with first.

Finally the Star Trek PADD (Personal Access Data Device) is a real thing..aka the iPad.

And finally there is a Star Trek app that looks like a PADD.

Star Trek PADD - CBS Interactive

Yeaaah we know it’s basically the same stuff you can get for free on Star Trek.com or Memory Alpha today FOR FREE. The iPad PADD app is $4.99 – BUT it’s got TNG’s LCARS interface and it’s just sooooooooooooo slick.

Yes it’s missing some stuff..like a notation on Data’s cat spot..and some other minutia..but for the most part for us as fans..we’ve love every minute of using this app.
IT’S A PADD!!

It’s about time.
Finally we’ve got Star Wars comics on the Dark Horse digital platform…

But wait..it’s not all of ’em.

AND FRAK YOU DARK HORSE it’s not even the current ones coming out this week.

Dark Horse is making old books (including the original Marvel Series) some new stuff, including some Knights of the Old Republic, Old Republic and Star Wars Legacy War – available.

It’s a mixed bad and not complete. Let’s hope that Dark Horse build a complete back catalogue and more importantly begins to ship digital titles the same day as the paper ones.

And oh yeah the prices is better.

From our brief look, most titles are $1.99 instead of the $2.99 or $3.50 that most Dark Horse print Star Wars titles have been lately. So yeaah this could (eventually) be a really good deal and the final nail in the coffin for our local comic book store. Why pay more when we can get it all on the iPad instantly for less?

One great video we just watched was about how the model builders built the Utapau model.

For Episode IV there is an amazing video about the holo-chess figures..(you know the stuff on the Falcon..) just amazing.

Who doesn’t love the holo-chess. All stop-motion stuff…who knew?

We all know that Ashoka has to go…
She doesn’t existing in Star Wars ANH (or III for that matter).

At some point she disappears…

or dies.

In an interview this week,Β  Clone Wars show chief Dave Filoni told ComicCon conf goes that,

“”I’ve done eight different endings for her. I’ll be talking to George about it soon,” said Filoni.

That’s right Ashoka fans…she’s going bye, bye.

Meantime lots to look forward too in Clone Wars Season 4 hard to believe that this series has been on the air for three years already.

Let’s hope it stays on for a few more…

Rise of The Planet of the Apes – so it wasn’t a nuclear war that killed off humans? July 19, 2011

We always kinda/sorta thought that humans had caused the destruction that led to humanity’s decline in the original Planet of the Apes. After all, most of the planet is buried and even the Statue of Liberty was partially destroyed.

Now along comes the new prequel – Rise of the Planet of the Apes and sure we have Caesar the first ape..but..

he’s the one that helps to destroy humanity? does Caesar’s apes nuke us? or…?

I guess we’ll mostly have to wait until August 5th when this movie is out…and YES this is one prequel that we’re excited about.

Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns is our fav caped crusader tale of all time (with Killing Joke a close second). It’s a future era of Batman (not quite the ultra futuristic Batman Beyond) but a cool Batman that is old and (dead) tired.

The first real trailer for Batman Rises looks like it is borrowing from that epic tail as Batman in the future faces his final test and the Dark Knight Returns for one last (mega million dollar) movie.

kinda cool stuff..though the robot now is slow and not nearly as fast as it could be (or should be).

Still..it’s interesting to see how video game hardware can be leverage to create a (potentially) killer robot arm.

We just got a new iOS Apple device and of course one of the first things we wanted to do was to find some good scifi games..

Our first stop was a search for Star Wars where we found Falcon Gunner…that’s right you get to to sit in the gun pod for the millenium falcon!

Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner - THQ Inc.

Well you should ..but the game crashes every 2 mins making the game unplayable. So we went to the game dev, THQ to see WTF is goin on…turns out THQ isn’t legally supposed to be selling any Star Wars games at this point…their license with Lucas has expired.

Why Falcon Gunner is still in the appstore? Who knows but those nerf herders stole$2.99 from us!

20110629-085443.jpg Now that Dark Horse has finished off Legacy..we’ve been looking at new series…

First up is Jedi the Dark Side… Now the art isn’t what we typically like..but after reading the first two issues it has started to grow on us.

Qui Gon is the central character but he’s not the jedi of episode one and he sure likes to yell at his padawan..Xanatos.

The Jedi librarian character Tahl is really interesting too as she comes off As the wise jedi master..

Where will this series go? What will happen to Xanatos? We know Qui Gon gets Obi Wan as a padawan at some point and a master only gets one padawan..

Fall scifi shows on big U.S. Networks are really thin June 29, 2011

Not a whole lot of great TV shows for scifi fans to look forward to this fall on the big U.S. Networks

This is all we currently see of any real interest..
Friday, 9/23 – 9/8c Fringe, FOX
Friday, 9/23 – 9/8c Supernatural, The CW
Monday, 9/26 – 8/7c Terra Nova, FOX

Terra Nova could be a real winner if FOX doesn’t kill it prematurely… The only other show that should be back is V on ABC though we have yet to see an official date on that.

Check out the clip below where he interviews Voyager’s Janeway..and she claims she had never heard of him before…aye Aye captain!

Star Wars : Fate of the Jedi : Conviction. 1 word review – TERRIBLE! June 28, 2011

This series started off alright but this is the worst book yet ….

As opposed to the last book – Fate of the Jedi Vortex – which was AWESOME, this book has a few interesting moments but for the most part it just drags on…

and on..

and on…..

and on…

So here’s the spoiler for you…Tahiri is convicted (the conviction on the cover), Chief of State Natasi is overthrown in a coup and then they both get sent to the same prison and both escape. In the meantime Abeloth is cornered and escapes..the Keshiri Sith are cornered and escape too.

and oh yeah Luke is the grandmaster of the Jedi again.

in between that..nothing happens, the plot is boring and pedantic and were it not for the fact that we knew it had to lead somewhere we would have put this book down midway for lack of anything interesting going on.

Yes this book advances the plot, so yes if like us, you’ve become hooked on the Fate of the Jedi, you will read it. But just don’t expect to enjoy it as much as Vortex.

Bioware’s trailers for Star Wars The old Republic are better than all three of the prequels…and this year at E3 they kicked it up a notch with The Return.

After 1,000 years the Sith return to Korriban and our fav new Sith Darth Malgus ( from deceived) is front and center.
