Star Trek Enterpise : The Romulan War – A Great Read! January 3, 2010

We were never fans of the Star Trek Enterprise series when it was on the air – but the book series is another story.
The Romulan War – which continues on the story begun in Kobyashi Maru in 2009 – is an excellent novel and one that makes Enterprise ‘whole’ again.
The Romulans are bad guys – and no one (except for the vulcans and trip) really know who they are. What we get in this book is a whole lot of plot and drama about the Romulan War – the back and forth battle as Romulans take territory from Earth and then Earth tries to win in back.
Then there is the whole subplot of the aftermath of the Kobyashi Maru – with Travis being re-assigned to a pair of different NX class starships – both of which end up being destroyed by the Romulans.
T’pol hooks up with Trip again (woohoo) – but this novel isn’t about character development – it’s about the plot – the star trek universe at a critical pre-federation era when it faces down the Romulans.
This is great Star Trek fiction – with back and forth action as Starfleet gets its feet wet in in its first real interstellar conflict – highly recommended for all Star Trek fans in our view.
Michael Dorn – Worf – becomes Lego Bionical in the Legend Reborn – Q’uaplah! December 30, 2009

This holiday season – some of the younger members of our ShowMeSciFi.com team picked up the recent Bionicle The Legend Reborn movie….
It could have been called Worf the Robot – as far as we’re concerned.
We had no idea Michael Dorn (the actor who played Klingon Worf) was in this movie – he’s the voice behind the main bionicle hero in this flick – Mata Nui.
The voice and the characters intonations and actions are very Klingon. He speaks of honor, glory and battle. No he doesn’t talk about Kahless or Stovokor but you know he’s thinking about it..
As a kids movie – this is ok fun. Bad robots get their nuts and bolts kicked in by good robots kinda thing. Animation is a little interesting in that it’s basically LEGO figures that have been fully animated.
For the Klingon (and Michael Dorn) fans out there, it’s also great fun to hear Dorn’s voice in a role that evokes the glory that is Worf (house of Martok son of Moog).

There are so many layers of plots and sub-plots in Star Wars Legacy – sometimes it’s hard to keep them all straight.
One of the most interesting – and the one that always has the biggest ships and the biggest battles are the plotlines/issues with Gar Stazi and the Galactic Alliance.
This is a sort of in-between issue that keeps the overall plot moving – stazi gets shot at and perhaps more importantly there is a link-up btwn the Alliance, the Jedi and the Imperial Knights led by the true Emperor Roan Fel.
The art – as always is astounding though this time we can’t credit our usual illustrator –
Starting with this comic – we’re officially launching our ShowMeSciFiComics subsite – just for comic reviews. We’ll still review them here – but we’ll just do the longer versions over there.
As well look on Showmescificomics.com for our take on what to look for in SciFiComics each and every week.
Star Wars Fate of the Jedi Abyss – The Kesh Sith are Back! December 21, 2009

Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Abyss is the third installment in the Fate of the Jedi series – and it’s not the best nor the worst (first book was outcast followed by Omen – which was awesome)
As is often the case lately with Star Wars series – each installment has a few interesting development and plots and sub-plots but aren’t standalone stories.
In Abyss, we finally see the Kesh Sith confront the Skywalkers – which was the best part (and the finale) of the book.
The return of the Sith – not Darth Bane’s Sith – but the True Sith that number in the hundreds (thousands?) is perhaps the best underlying plotline in the Fate of the Jedi series.
The subplot of the going ons in Coruscant with Daala is relatively week and she’s not well written in this particular story. Author Troy Denning is best with the Skywalkers and the Sith and that’s where this story excels.
Yes, this is another example of a long drawn out story – but for fans (like us) it’s one that you just don’t want to miss.
Dollhouse – The Rossum Mainframe is powered by the Attic December 20, 2009

We’ve heard about the Attic from the earliest Dollhouse shows – now we finally know what it’s all about. The Attic Part 2 was one of the finest Dollhouse episodes ever.
Rossum is using ‘unfit dolls’ and enemies of Rossum as human computers – their brains are all connected to power the mainframe – OUTSTANDING.
Meeting the Rossum co-founder – who has been stuck in the attic since 1993 – also neat.
But this was one episode that was also really disturbing – how about that guy stuck in the sushi bar where he had to eat his own legs??? That was repulsive.
On the other hand, the fact that Adele is now onside with bringing down Rossum is also an interesting change of events –
Dollhouse has had its ups and downs but the last four hours worth of episodes have been…well..outstanding. It is a shame this show has been canceled, but it sure is going out with a bang isn’t it?

The World of New Krypton series is now winding down…but first Commander El has a mystery to solve.
Is the Labor guild behind the murder or are they being setup?
I don’t know – neither does Commander El – but somehow Adam Strange might..
We’ve never been big Adam Strange fans but apparently he’s got better investigative skills that superman – how we’re not sure but hey we’ll find out.
Not sure how they’ll actually wrap up this series in the next two issue – there are still too many sub-plots to wrap up.
Among them – Will General Zod return?
Will Commander El return to Earth?

The good folks at SyFy are so very much unlike the idiots that run Fox – aren’t they?
Today SyFy announced that Stargate Universe is being picked for a second season.
That’s good news.
No Stargate Universe is not the best iteration of Stargate – the first season so far has had an equal share of hits to misses – and it really does seem like Voyager meets 90210.
But it is evolving with each episode and it’s a show that despite some of our first negativity is actually starting to grow on us ..
That’s why a decent scifi show needs at least two – if not 3 or more seasons to mature.
Let’s just hope that Stargate Universe does mature beyond its pre-pubescent approach that we’ve seen so far..

The original Tron movie was all about living inside a video game – and the same will be true for Tron 2 – now known as Tron Legacy.
The first official Tron Legacy game is called Tron Evolution and is set to be out in 2010.
Yeaah it looks like Deadly Disks are back, Solar Surfer too – remember those great intellivision games from the 80’s…we sure do those were the first great Intellivoice games…

It’s such a shame that Dollhouse has been canceled – this week’s double episode – 7 and 8 – were among the best this show has ever had.
Episode seven we see a new type of doll – one that can change personalities on the fly to suit the need. Call her – Echo Supreme. Wasn’t that awesome?
Then the tour de force that was Episode 8 –A Love Supreme Part 2 – finally alpha is back – (where the frak did he go after the end of Season 1)??
He’s a wonderful nutbag of a character that we all love to hate.
And in a brilliant stroke of drama – Ballard is now brain dead but his imprint with Alpha – WOW.
There are so many loose ends and lots more drama to come as the final 4 episode of Dollhouse wind down this awesome show, once and for all.

Grey Matters was a fine attempt at explaining why/how Walter went nuts and ended up at St.Clairs
After all they did cut up his brain.
Was that his pal Bell there at the end that cut up his brain? Crazy..his own partner stole his life..
But then Bell went over to the other side on his own…and the warriors from the other side knew how to make it across too – so why bother with Walter?

wow what another great episode –Justice
– Stargate Universe Season 1 episode 10 started off as a typical whodunnit..
But with the added who framed Col Young twist this was one interesting episode.
So..it Rush lost? Not likely, that alien ship will be his ticket back to Earth and Destiny at some point.
Will Eli tell anyone what he suspects? oohhh yeah..EVENTUALLY he will, just a question of when.

Dollhouse is Back (well until it gets cancelled) – and its back with a BANG!!
So Rossum Corp turned one of its dollhouses against the other in a plot to ensure that the dollhouse itself is never exposed.
Amazing.
Topher and Topher as a doll – FUNNY
Summer Glau as the D.C version of Topher – ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT..Summer was awesome.
The complexity of plot in this two episode set was astounding with layer within layer and multiple sub-plot texts underneath. We know have seen our second dollhouse, we’ve now seen that Topher is really nuts..and we know more about Echo/Caroline than we’ve ever known before.
So where does Dollhouse go from here?
Well at some point Ballard will bring the Dollhouse down. At some point Caroline will help him and somewhere along the way Doc Sanders/Whisky and Alpha will return

Last night’s Fringe episode – Snakehead – was one weird episode.
Another non-pattern event – this was just some whack job herbalist that was implanting a worm into immigrants.
Yes it was neat to see the Alien like emergence, and sure Walter getting lost in Chinatown was fun…
But overall a weak episode, for which we haven’t got much of a review cause it wasn’t much of an episode was it?
Next stop: Cancellation.

Looks like FlashForward’s main plot is winding down doesn’t it?
Loyld Simcoe and Olivia were starting to get real cozy – and what the frak was up with Simcoe saying he caused the black out?
We now know conclusively that D Gibbons was behind the whole thing beyond any doubt – how we get to him – isn’t clear.
The whole bit with demetri’s fiance actually realizing her flashforward was dem’s funeral and not their wedding was also cool.
all in all a great episode, but i’m not sure how much is left unknown in this plot.

No we weren’t fans of the theatrical release of Terminator Salvation…but sure we’re likely to pick it up on DVD, just because.
It’s out on Tues Dec 1 (Terminator Salvation (Director’s Cut) [Blu-ray]), but the real key is the deleted scenes, but don’t expect much.
The big deleted scene, which has already been leaked is some minor nudity from everyone’s favorite A10 pilot/Terminator loving resistance fighter Moon Bloodgood.
Here’s the snippet and don’t worry it’s SFW.
(and just in case it doesn’t load here’s the native URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6vFM7ExvpE)

Final episode of Chad Vader Season Two – episode 10 is now out and it’s a fun ending to a decent season.
The story comes full circle – as it always does – with Chad now once again in line – as he always is – to become General Manager of Empire Market.
The bonus is we get our best lightsaber battle – for Chad – yet – as he faces off against his one time apprentice commander Jeremy Wickstrom.
Along the way Weird Jimmy gets in the way…
Congrats to the Blame Society guys, they’ve done another fantastic job! Season 3 of Chad Vader is set for sometime in 2010.

No new Stargate Universe this week, but next week will be the last episode for a few months…
Yeah we hate mid-season finales too.
The basic story behind the mid-season finale is another character story – this time we’ve got a murder on the destiny.
Everyone is shocked when a member of the crew is found dead from a gunshot wound. While at first glance it appears to be suicide, the gun is nowhere to be found. The crew is confined to quarters while a search is performed and when the gun shows up in Col. Young’s (LOUIS FERREIRA) quarters, he becomes the number one suspect. Fearing a mob scene, Young agrees to a trial and cedes command to Camile Wray (MING-NA).
Dr. Rush (ROBERT CARLYLE) convinces Wray to give him control of the science team and carte blanche with the new Ancient interface, previously kept under guard. But before Rush can unlock its secret, or Young’s trial can conclude, both are needed to explore a planet hiding a secret that threatens the Destiny and her crew.

Sure it’s been out for a two week on DVD now but Black Friday pricing for Star Trek 2009 is really out of this world.
Over at Amazon –Star Trek (Single-Disc Edition) – is only $9 which is half price for a brand new copy.
We haven’t yet seen $9 copies anywhere else, though we’d expect that by January Blockbuster will have them in the previously viewed shelf.
But if you need one of these for an Xmas gift this might be a good time to pick it up.
