Rebellion didn’t start out as a particularly fantastic series – the first arc (link) was ok , but this new one is really shaping up nicely.

Art is real solid, and Vader is fearsome.

The real interesting part of this issue is the revelation that the Empire has a technology hub that handles the logistics of the Imperial Fleet. It’s an idea that i’ve never heard or before, I would have expected such an installation at Bastion maybe but not some backwater.

While I had my doubts at the beginning of this arc in issue #6, i’m on board now.

Nonetheless, a good issue and one that will keep me reading this series and looking forward to issue #9 in a few weeks.

There are always a tonne of interesting star wars toys available on eBay, some end up going for way more than you’d ever expect, some go for less and some don’t go at all.

As part of a new feature starting today on ShowMeSciFi, we’re going to highlight interesting stuff to look out for, as well as provide information on what some interesting stuff has sold for (or not).

Came across this neat contest – If Trekkies ruled.
Bascially its a really funny set of pics imagining what our world would be like if Trek really did rule.

Lots of pointy ears, a few Klingons, some Bajorans in the mix too.

I’d like to think that if Trek really did rule the world though that we’d all actually have real food replicators (no world hunger) and hey the no money thing is interesting (though unfeasable).

Check out the rest of the pics over at Worth1000.com

If this were a Stephen King novel i’d certainly have raced through this issue to reach the end. IN comic book format we don’t get that luxury – we have to wait a month.

This is a decent issue but doesn’t really have any really extraordinary revelations or artwook. Sure it’s good but…issue 6 in a 7 issue series is just a stepping stone to the grand finale.

I know..we said that about issue #5

Will issue 7 be a let down? of course it will. Dark Tower fans already know what the first book has so it’s just a question of filling in the gaps.

What’s a review for The Yiddish Policemen’s Union doing on ShowMeSciFi? Easy – it’s a speculative piece of literary science fiction in that it occurs in a fictional timeline that doesn’t exist.

Similiar but not nearly as dark as Philip K. Dick’s The Man In The HIgh Castle – Michael Chabon’s The Yiddish Policemen’s Union deals with a US that is different than the one we know in that the State of Israel never survives and as such a seperate temporary homeland for the Jews is carved out of a desolate place of Alaska.

This is their story on the eve of ‘reversion’ the event which will force the Jews out of Alaska as the State of Alaska retakes the land.

It’s an interesting concept and one that drew me in on the speculative – what if – side.

The actual story is another matter. Essentially it’s a murder whodunnit against the speculative history backdrop which is o.k except for the fact that Chabon does a very very very poor job of building a case against the murder. It’s as if he wrote 300 pages and realized he had to pin the crime on someone so he just threw a dart.

The lead character Meyer Landsman is the only one with any real depth the others are sad caricatures that are poorly draw. I would have given up on this book well before reading to the end were it not for Chabon’s easy style. It’s unfortunate that his plot was so utterly lacking.

Apparently Sony is set to roll out a new PSP later this year that will be  33 percent lighter, 19 percent slimmer, the battery will be more efficient, and there will also be faster loading of games. It’s also expected to include a TV output in high def maybe.

They’re planning on rolling a Star Wars themed new PSP too –  the new Star Wars Battlefront PSP pack, which will include the Star Wars: Battlefront Renegade Squadron game and the special Star Wars PSP.

Star Wars: Battlefront Renegade Squadron is a PSP only game that extends the Battlefront saga.
It’s expected to hit shelves in October. Woohoo!

Remember last year’s Battlestar Galactica Resistance Webisodes?

They’re BAAAAACCK.

In advance of the two-hour movie Battlestar Galactica: Razor on Nov. 24, SCI FI will air an eight-week series of exclusive mini-sodes, between two and three minutes in length, beginning in October. The promotional shorts will provide a backdrop to events that will take place in the rest of the fourth season of Battlestar. Written by Michael Taylor and directed by Wayne Rose and Felix Alcala, the shorts will take place during the original Cylon War and center on a young William Adama (played by Nico Cortez), who discovers a dangerous Cylon weapon that will come to haunt him and his crew 40 years later. The mini-sodes will be available on SCIFI.COM after they debut on the network.

Neat. Though at 3 minutes each they will be painful to watch one at a time.

If you haven’t seen the trailer for Razor yet check it out, it’s frakkin cool.

Star Wars: Legacy #14–Claws of the Dragon pt. 1 is the first issue of a new story arc in which we will finally find out who Darth Krayt really is .

This is yet another awesome issue that is brilliant drawn and written. Cade Skywalker makes his way to Coruscant where he is ultimately captured by the Sith. It is also painfully obvious that Cade is more comfortable with a blaster than with using the force, something that isn’t a suprise I suppose since he did leave his Jedi roots behind for many years.

Though this issue is a stepping to stone to issue 15 – which is likely one of the most highly anticipated Star Wars comic book releases in a generation – it’s still worthy of much merit and praise.

We learn that Darth Krayt is dying and that Cade Skywalker may be his only chance for survival.
The Mynock (Cade’s ship) has got some info on it and thnx to a friendly Hutt, that info is going to fall into friendly hands.

Oh and the art…WOW…we see the first real shots of Coruscant in the Legacy era and of the Legacy era Tie Fighter (which are sort of like Tie Interceptors on steroids).

That said…i can hardly contain my enthusiasm for issue 15. FINALLLY we’ll find out who Darth Krayt is.

I wonder if anyone in the ShowMeSciFi discussion forum is actually right.

Farscape is coming Back!!

No it’s not going to be a sequel to The PeaceKeeper Wars – how would you do a sequel to that anyways?

Apparently the new Farscape series will be an online only thing with a series of web based short episodes that will appear on SCIFI.COM’s SCI FI Pulse broadband network.

So far SCI FI has ordered 10 webisodes of Farscape, to be produced by Brian Henson and Robert Halmi Jr. and produced by The Jim Henson Co., in association with RHI Entertainment.

The only details on the show available so far are that it will somehow ‘expand the Farscape universe’. Beyond that no word on when the show will appear or who will appear in it.

Considering that both Ben Browder and Claudia Black are now available again since SG-1 is mostly done and neither of them will be full time regulars on Stargate Atlantis..we might see them again too..

First there was a PS2 game which wasn’t too bad at all ..then there was the unofficial (but really great) Beyond the Red Line Game.

Now it looks like a small Battlestar Galactica game is coming the XBOX360 – but don’t worry about having to rush out to your local retailer to buy it..it’s so dinky you’ll just be able to download it from the Live Arcade.

Sign up to defend the Galactica, or play as the ruthless Cylons as they seek to remove the human menace from existence. Take part in enormous multiplayer space battles – up to 8 players online – or play through the single-player campaign.

Overall if early reports are to be believed – it could be a pretty decent arcade shooter.

We’ve all seen the ‘inspirational’ posters in local malls..the Star Trek variety are a bit more interesting for those of us that prefer Trek.

It’s a great idea with some really keen satire too.

SciFi showed a 30 second preview of the upcoming movie Battlestar Galactica Razor – set to air in November.

AWESOME.

War Is Our Imperative. So We Will Fight – Admiral Cain in Razor.

I see this movie based on the trailer – as a copycat approach of the Babylon 5 movie ‘In the Beginning’ (which was awesome too). Originally we thought that this movie would be all about Battlestar Pegasus, but it looks like its really about the origin of the war itself – which got an ok treatment in the mini-series- but will get a different viewpoint in the Razor movie.

Without any further ado..here’s the trailer that aired last night on Scifi. Enjoy.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Contest discontinued by Simon and Shuster July 10, 2007

After 10 magnificent years of the most interesting contest in Star Trek lore, publisher Simon and Shuster is pulling the plug on the Strange New Worlds contest.

Volume 10 available now, is the last one.

This is the contest that allowed anyone to submit their short Star Trek fiction and have a shot at publication. By ending this publication Simon and Shuster is cutting the heart out of amateur writers that want to break into the game.

There is nothing else like this contest currently available. The discontinuation of this series is a disaster and morbid day for all Star Trek fans.

Ten years ago Pocket Books offered Star Trek fans a unique opportunity. Long before the Internet, Star Trek fans had written their own stories, which they then shared among friends and family. Now, the fans were offered a chance to become a part of the Star Trek mythos. A contest sponsored by Pocket Books would publish and pay for the best stories submitted by non-professional writers. And over the course of a decade, hundreds of pounds of submissions poured in. Many of the writers who submitted to Strange New Worlds went on to become professional writers.

As of 2007, we will be discontinuing the publication of Strange New Worlds.

Pocket Books is proud to have sponsored the only contest of this kind ever offered to the readers of their books. And over the years with the co-operation of Paramount Pictures, and now CBS Consumer Products, Pocket Books has published ten volumes of short stories “by the fans for the fans.” We would like to thank everyone who ever submitted a story to Strange New Worlds, and everyone who worked behind-the-scenes to make it all happen.

Why is this successful contest being terminated? We don’t know. All we know is that the Star Trek franchise is once again FRAKKING over its fans.

Back in February Hasbro announced the Show Us Your Lightsaber contest on YouTube..i have to admit that I totally forgot about it ..until i came across the group today.

I didn’t miss much.

The group only netted 42 videos most of them unwatchable including the winner which is so pathetic that I will not link to it on this blog. None of the vids went viral and none (expect for hasbro’s only trailer) had more than 2,000 views with the majority (including the pathetic winner) at well under 1,000.

The only one that I like was the Saber of Ra – linked below – it’s well done and it sure is unique.

The followup to last years sensational Hunters of Dune is almost here.
Sandworms is set to be the FINAL FINAL climax to one of the greatest SciFi series of all time.

We will finally see the ultimate showdown between Omnius and Free Humans and will finally see the absolute last chapter of this series (or not).

There are so many thing at play in this series it’s difficult to speculate on how things will end up other than to say that somehow humanity will prevail (hopefully).

Zuda comics – So you want to be a comic book writer? July 9, 2007

Actually getting paid by a big publisher like DC Comics to write comic books for many is just a pipe dream.

But now DC Comics through its new Zuda Comics affiliate is about to change the game.

When you submit your Web Comics to Zuda, you could be chosen immediately for a publishing contract or be entered into a competition where the rest of the Zuda Community will pick a Web Comic to win a publishing contract.

Full specs haven’t been published just yet and the full launch isn’t until October..but it looks like one of the most open approaches to getting published by a big house.

“There is an explosion of creativity in web comics,” said Paul Levitz, DC Comics President & Publisher in a statement. “We want to build a great stage for this new generation of creators to perform on, a solid system for their work to reach audiences online and in print, and for the creators to share in the profits their creations can generate. In this time of rapid technological and cultural change, DC wants to be a good publisher for the evolving and growing community of online comic creators, so that we can be their partner for showcasing new kinds of works to entertain future generations.”

Sounds like a great deal to me. (ShowMeSciFi the comic book series here we come!)

It looks like i’ll be playing the third iteration of this series on the PSP with Star Wars Battlefront Renegade Squadron. The trailer looks awesome..check it out below..
