Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic #50 The Series Finale February 25, 2010

After 50 issues it’s over.

None of us will be getting Dark Horse Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic new issues ever again.

It’s kind of sad – and it marks the end of an era.

KOTOR never did truly live up to the fantastic plot of the video games and nearly every issue had a letter in it when some reader or the other wondered when the plots would overlap. Sure we saw Malak and Revan, but never for much more than a few cells in an issue.

This final issue kinda/sorta ends off some loose ends.

At long last Zayne and Jarael get a little friendly which is sooo very long overdue.

Will we miss KOTOR – maybe – but reality is this series could have been better, though it did have its highlights. The arc when Zayne confronts the Adascas was awesome as was the final confrontation with Hazen in issue #33- that was the best wasn’t it?

Now the word is that series author John Jackson Miller will be back later this year with Star Wars Jedi another old republic title – and that’s a good thing.  The era of the Old Republic is on that demands at least one ongoing Star Wars title at all times.

So long and fair well Zayne Carrick – it was a fun ride while it lasted.

one of the best deals we’ve ever seen on ‘new’ (that is not nick and dent) Star Wars trade paperbacks (that’s graphic novel for the old timers) is now on.

Our sister site – ShowMeSciFiComics.com has all the details on the offer.

While you’re there, why not check out some of the other content too? The site isn’t yet as established as this one, but hey every site starts somewhere.

Don’t dawdle too much though the deal on the Star Wars Tales TPBs is only going until Jan 6th – and oh yeah did we mention that they’re only $5 a piece?

With the lack of new IPOs this year on the NYSE – i guess they’ve had trouble find new people to ring the ceremonial bell to open the trading session.

Good thing the Dark Lord of the Sith was available to help them out.

Star Wars Fate of the Jedi Abyss – The Kesh Sith are Back! December 21, 2009

Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Abyss is the third installment in the Fate of the Jedi series – and it’s not the best nor the worst (first book was outcast followed by Omen – which was awesome)

As is often the case lately with Star Wars series – each installment has a few interesting development and plots and sub-plots but aren’t standalone stories.

In Abyss, we finally see the Kesh Sith confront the Skywalkers – which was the best part (and the finale) of the book.

The return of the Sith – not Darth Bane’s Sith – but the True Sith that number in the hundreds (thousands?) is perhaps the best underlying plotline in the Fate of the Jedi series.

The subplot of the going ons in Coruscant with Daala is relatively week and she’s not well written in this particular story.  Author Troy Denning is best with the Skywalkers and the Sith and that’s where this story excels.

Yes, this is another example of a long drawn out story – but for fans (like us) it’s one that you just don’t want to miss.

Who doesn’t love ewoks?

It has been 25 years since we saw them in Return of the Jedi and they’ve never been in any other Star Wars movie..but they’re still as popular as ever..

especially when they’re moonwalking (endor-style) drunk

Dark Horse discontinuing Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic with issue #50 October 13, 2009

kotor Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic is being cancelled by Dark Horse as of issue 50 in Feb of 2010.

THAT SUCKS.

If anyone needed proof that Dark Horse is run by idiots, here is one prime example.

This series has grown on us as we’ve followed Zayne around. Sure once the conspiracy against him was revealed and Hazen destroyed it hasn’t been as exciting

Sure the artwork hasn’t been consistent and yes we’ve complained about that a dozen times or more in this blog.

But the storytelling was also good if not great.

Dark Horse can’t seem to keep a regular Star Wars title for too long, they get nervous or something and just kill it. It’s not right and we the fans should tell them so.

John Jackson Miller the creator/writer extraordinaire of the series though is optimistic and is promising us all a big finale.

We’ve been working toward the series’ climax for some time, getting pieces into place for the big finale — where we really have pulled out all the stops. Every question posed in the series (at least to my way of thinking) is addressed. I turned in the last script recently and was very pleased with it — it wraps things up for this incarnation pretty close to how I’d always imagined it. Dark Horse has given us marvelous support and creative freedom from Day 1 on this series — and we did everything to make sure things went out with a bang!

Clone Wars Season 2 – So far so good October 12, 2009

starwars.clone.warsWe’re a little behind the curve here, but have now just watched the first two episodes of Clone Wars Season 2

So far so good.

Though..the plot was a little thin. I mean come ON how could Bain walk out of the Jedi temple without someone sensing him in the Force? That was a bit of a stretch.

Beyond that, another decent coming of age episode for Ashoka and hey Bounty Hunters rock.

The new clone wars has a basic but very enjoyable formula for most shows that just works.

What I’m still really looking forward to seeing are the hints of darkness in Anakin that we have yet to see.

death.troopersYeaah a book trailer.  It’s actually a great idea that book publishers (and comic publishers) should consider doing more often.

With Star Wars Death Troopers, the trailers are fan made as a result of a Del-Ray sponsored contest.

We’ll save the time and embed the best one below.  You can go vote for this one yourself over at the delray contest site too. Voting starts on October 9th and will run through October 22.

The Death Troopers book itself is out on Oct 13th

Star Wars Fate of the Jedi : Omen REVIEW – In One Word, the best yet! September 27, 2009

omen The first Fate of the Jedi book : Outcast – was a decent but not great book.

Omen on the other hand is a GREAT book. Both a great Star Wars book and a fine SciFi book too.

The most memorable bit of this book for me are the backstory elements from the Sith of Kesh. These are Sith that have been cut off from the rest of galaxy for millenia and are now venturing back out.

FINALLY REAL SITH.

No more of this – rule of 2  – crap. Now we’ve got thousands of Sith ready to go on the rampage and that’s cool.

The Ang-ti the new race of force users are also cool. Why does it always have to be light or dark side of the force anyways?

The pacing of this book is brilliant with nice ‘bite-sized’ scenes that flow well without any extra/useless narrative.

The other interesting character aspect is how the media is brought into this. I don’t recall the media – as in journalists – ever really playing a key role in any star wars book before. It’s an interesting angle for sure.

Why are all the Jedi going nuts? I don’t know. No doubt the publishers are going to continue to stretch that part of the storyline out and squeeze it for every dollar they can.

Yes, this book is a bit short and yes as a hardcover the price if waay to high. We couldn’t afford to buy this book – that’s why the review is so late – but thankfully our local library finally got it in.

Disney Closing Star Tours in October 2010. Star Tours II coming in 2011 September 14, 2009

Star Tours is a classic Disney motion simulator ride…

But that’s just the prob isn’t it? It’s classic – it’s old and dated even more so than the Star Trek Experience was in Las Vegas.

After a magnificent run, Star Tours is now set to close in October of 2010. But within a year it will be replaced by Star Tours II

Not many details yet on the new ride, other than a slick podracer scene in the vid from Disney.

starwars.clone.warsDon’t know about you but we miss Clone Wars and can’t wait for season two to start.

We’ll all have to wait until Friday Oct 2nd though.

It looks like this year will mark the return of the Bounty Hunters, and in particular Mandalorian bounty hunters (not just Fett either).

If you’re looking for Star Wars The Clone Wars: The Complete Season One (TV Series)on DVD, you’ve got to wait until November 3rd to get your copy.

In the meantime, how about a nice little Season Two trailer to keep you interested?

Star Wars Dark Times : Blue Harvest – Why the delay Dark Horse?? August 12, 2009

Dark Horse sure knows how to kill a great comic. Star Wars Dark Times – Blue Harvest first was published in April and there isn’t a second issue until August!!!

I just picked up issue O of Blue Harvest – it just came out – four months after the first issue!!! What the FRAK is the point Dark Horse? Why do you treat your loyal readers with such contempt?

Dark Horse’s moronic publishing schedule aside – Dark Times Blue Harvest is awesome. The art from Doug Wheatley is second to none – the man is the best Star Wars artist working today.

The story – fantastic!! That’s why we want more!! That’s why we want it monthly!!

Star Wars Clone War Super Vulture Droid Vehicle toy – lots to play with and not too much $$ July 19, 2009

A new bunch of Habro ships are now out – including a new Super Vulture Droid fighter!

Loads of weapons on this bad boy – 6 rockets with 2 launchers, for all sorts of combat fun. A spring-loaded “head” pops up to compliment the split-apart wings, which transforms the ship from sleek starfighter to a birdlike walking robot.

I haven’t seen this ship (yet) on store shelves but it is available from Entertainment Earth for $26.99 now. I have not yet seen a better deal on eBay with pricing ranging from $29.95 to $34.95. (Vulture Droid on eBay)

Doesn’t it always suck when you’re playing a game and you have to read the text the character is supposed to be saying?

It kills the mood of the game doesn’t it?

That won’t be the came with Star Wars the Old Republic – the whole shebang will be fully voiced!

Bioware has a new documentary vid about the voice stuff – in which they show some new gameplay footage too. Looks great!

There have been a lot of fan films based off Star Wars – the original movie episode IV A New Hope – over the last 30 years.

Now Star Wars Uncut has an ingenious way to get a whole star wars movie made by fans – 15 seconds at a time.

It’s an interesting idea – but the quality is somewhat lacking at this early stage – check out some of the first 15 second uploads at: http://www.starwarsuncut.com/#/

Star Wars Fan Movie Challenge 2009 – Last Chance to vote July 7, 2009

It’s that time of year again! Atom Films Star Wars Fan film challenge 2009 and you’ve only got until Friday July 10th to vote.

As was the case last year – there are a few retreads from other Star Wars Fan film venues – but there are also some that we’ve never seen elsewhere that are truly AWESOME.

Unfortunately  Atom still doesn’t have a video clips that can be directly shared/embedded in a wordpress.com blog  — which by the way Atom execs – TOTALLY SUX Bantha Fodder –

Among the finalists this year that we like are:

Bad Day For Vader

Here it is as a contestant in the 2006 Spacey Awards

Knights of the Old Republic: Revan IS a fantastic live action version of Darth Revan that is great to watch.

For the horny toads out there the clear winner is:

Saber which pits two hot stripper chicks against each other in some weird version of light saber strip attacking.

And our final pick is :

WTF Star Wars – which is an alternate take on Episode IV – where the Death Star survives and Destroys Yavin IV.

Go to the Atom Films Star Wars site and see ’em all for yourself and be sure to vote – and tell us who you voted for!

Star Wars Fate of the Jedi book 2: Omen is now out — but it’s too expensive June 29, 2009

omenWe mostly liked the first book in the Fate of the Jedi series: Outcast.  It starts off an interesting new Star Wars series..

The only problem is that this series is all hardcover and as such is triple the price per book of a paperback.

The economy is what it is and hey we can’t afford to buy an all-hardcover series anymore here at ShowMeSciFi.com.

The new book – Omen – has been out for a week or so and we expect to see prices drop for used copies on Amazon at some point (hopefully).

The decision by Lucas to allow an all hardcover (read more $$) star war series IS A DISGUSTING MONEY GRAB.

Even if they went for a mix of some hard and some paperback – like Legacy of the Force – that would work. This way the series is inaccessable to thousands of fans like us — that live in the real world where salaries (if you have a job) are slashed and money is tight

Star Wars The Old Republic – The Sith Sack Coruscant – Game trailer June 25, 2009

This is perhaps the most awesome game trailer ever made.

The animation is frakking fantastic! If the actual gameplay of Star Wars The Old Republic is anything close to the cinematic quality of the trailer — this game will revolutionize the Star Wars universe.

This is an era that the Dark Horse comics have lightly touched on, but never like this.

This is hundreds of Sith fighting hundreds of Jedi in an animation style that rivals real actors.

Star Wars: Legacy #36 -Krayt Imperials vs Fel Imperials vs Galactic Alliance June 1, 2009

One of the best parts about Star Wars Legacy is the complexity of the larger Star Wars universe.
But sometimes it gets a little too complex.

In this issue we get a one off story updating us on the status of the Galactic Alliance fleet which is now allied with Roan Fel’s Imperial Fleet.

They run into an engagement with Krayt’s imperials – and guess what?
The Imperials – Krayt or Fel’s all kinda look the same. Come to think of Stazi’s GA ships all look like Imperial star destroyers too (cause the y are)

We had to re-read several sections of this issue several times to try and keeps sides straight and figure out who was who (and on which side).

That’s kinda neat actually ..a little confusing but again it shows the complexity of the Legacy universe.

Missing from this issue are the Jedi – who apparently have no fleets of their own and are just bystanders in this whole movement of Armada’s business

Star Wars Legacy #35 Cade is a SCUMBAG May 15, 2009

After all he’s been through, Cade Skywalker is still scum.

He defeated Darth Krayt, was hailed as a savior of the Jedi Order and maybe even the Galactic Alliance itself but in the end Cade is a troubled man.

When we first met Cade way back in the first issue of this series he was hiding who he was and living out his life as a bounty hunter.

Then over the course of the last three years he has revealed who he really is, his friends have found out who he really is but none of that matters.

At the core of his being Cade Skywalker is bounty hunter scum.

In this issue he ends up starting a bar fight and nearly turns to the dark side to kill his cousin.

For what??

It’s his nature. Cade is no Jedi hero. He is a Skywalker but he is not the heir to the Luke Skywalker legacy.

That’s fine by us and what makes Legacy one of the best Star Wars storylines of all time.

It would have been easy for this series to be just about the transformation of Cade from bounty hunter to Jedi hero. But life is never that easy and neither is this series. It’s a complex series where heroes are villains and there are no clear answers.

At the end of this issue, Cade returns to the life he had where this series began. A disreputable scum bag on the run.
