Star Trek XI is Alternate Universe Crap. But a good standalone movie May 8, 2009

Star Trek XI, from a pure action, character and standalone plot point of view is one the top three Star Trek movies ever.

But Star Trek isn’t about standalone plots and that’s why this movie was so bitterly dissapointing. The whole thing is an alternate reality. So that means the 40 years of Star Trek history that we all know and love is thrown out the windows.

That’s BOGUS.

That aside there are some great things in Star Trek XI both Spock’s are great. Uhura’s relationship with Spock is cool. Kirk is a great character as is his dad. Nero is excellent as is Captain Pike.

The best scene for me was the Kobyashi Meru – that was brilliant. We first heard about how Kirk cheated the simulator in Star Trek II and now 30 years later we get to see how he actually did it and it WAS AWESOME.

The ship itself was a little lame.

Engineering is just a bunch of pipes and knobs, no warp core to speak off, which again is TOTALLY BOGUS.

But the jump to warp speed was cool and the ship’s displays and alert systems are all neat too.

Overall a mixed bag, but mostly positive and we’re likely to see this movie again and again and again. No this isn’t as good as Star Trek II but it’s easily a whole lot better than Nemesis, Search for spock and Final Frontier.

Last night’s episode of Fringe,  The Road Not Taken
got rid of Olivia’s closest enemy agent Harris.

We had him pegged for being a douche but we didn’t see it coming that he was ZFT.

The whole firestarter thing was really cool too, i wonder if Olivia can do the same thing? Notice how in the room where they ignited the twin there was one of those light boards that ZFT uses to test recruits…so we’ll have to see

And nice shout out to Spock / Star Trek in this episode too…next episode Nimoy himself will finally appear.

Not sure how the Watcher fits in..but clearly Walter was expecting him.

Without a doubt Fringe is the best new SciFi show of the past year. The characters are interesting, deep and entertaining. The plots are well constructed and full of twists.

The pacing of the shows is great, without too much dead weight or prancing around.

We all love Walter and Olivia is well she’s just awesome.

Now Fox has officially announced that they have renewed Fringe for a second season..which is great news.

Fringe is not Sarah Connor Chronicle which isn’t a good show and likely will get cancelled by Fox.

Dollhouse on the other end is an excellent show and we here at ShowMeSciFi have our fingers crossed that Fox sees the light and doesn’t destroy another Joss Whedon production.

After dragging this basic storyline out for the last four issues, we’re finally getting closer to the end game here.

Anakin is a ‘slave’ to the Queen of Zygerria, but what?? She gets killed? and she loves him??
NUTS. Padme sure wouldn’t be happy about that.
And where was the rest of the Republic Fleet this whole time?

And now Dooku is going to turn on Zygerria? ok that’s kinda cool.

I will buy the final issue in this story arc, but am not likely to continue buying this series overall. Though it’s ok, it’s not nearly half as good as the animated series on TV.

No he’s not a Jedi padawan anymore and he’s not a fugitive either..

but it sure does seem like Zayne is on the run in this issue..

This is the middle issue in this new story arc where Zayne is part of a live swoop sporting event where he’s trying to save himself and a few others.

We still don’t know what the deal is with Jarael and her force abilities..clearly that’s the big mystery that this series will continue to draw out.

How is this going to end? We’ll see in 30 days..

Star Wars Fate of the Jedi Book 1 Outcast : A decent, but not great start May 2, 2009

outcastJust finished reading the first book in the new Star Wars Fate of the Jedi series,  Outcast (Outcast (Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi, Book 1) and it’s left me with some mixed feelings.

No this is not the fantastic start that the Legacy of the Force had with the civil war..though this is a similar concept isn’t it?

The Jedi once again are at risk of being purged the by the Senate.

How could Luke Skywalker agree to his exile? How could he agree to the whole observer thing? MAKES NO SENSE.

The idea in general of a new Jedi purge is a great one. The evolution of Jagged Fel as ruler of the Imperial Remnant (or Galactic Empire as he calls it) is cool. Jainia being in love with his also great (and we know that this ultimately lead to Star Wars Legacy 200 hundred years later..). Those elements are good and represent the best parts of this book.

The book is well written and some of the plot segments are ok but it’s poorly stitched together overall, especially for a first book in the series. There is no big climax in this book that all great Star Wars books must have. There is no payoff for reading through till the end, no reward or big fanfare. It’s just kinda there and that is disappointing.

Will I continue to read this series? Sure. But i won’t be buying these expensive hardcover books in the store. I’ll just wait until my local library gets them.

What a great episode of dollhouse. Agent Ballard finally finds the Dollhouse with the help of

ALPHA!!

We did not see that coming, it wasn’t until Alpha slashed Victor that we even had a clue.

The twist with data key sending Sierra to Tucson was a little odd and didn’t really make much sense though..

And why wouldn’t Topher have known what Alpha looked like?

And which personality did Alpha imprint on Echo??

Lots of questions in this first episode of Dollhouse yet that did not have a clean ending.

Just came across 10 Items or Less (TBS) and an episode called ‘Star Trok’.  Funny stuff.

Basically the store (G&G) decides to have a Star Trek convention, but they can’t call it Trek (legal reasons) so they call it Trok.

Somehow they get Jolene Blalock (T’pol from Enterprise) to show up, but first she gets stuck in the freezer for a bit ..and well just go to TBS and watch the whole thing for free. It’s good fun and Jolene is great.

So ZFT is run by William Bell? RLY??

That was the big revelation in last night’s episode Midnight
, but another fine freak’ish scientific mix too.

The only cure for the vampire is spinal fluid..that’s one that i hadn’t heard off before.

Clearly this show is headed toward one massive season finale.

Klingons cut from Star Trek XI! jatlhwI’pu’ !! April 28, 2009

J J Abrams is so keen on having his vision of Star Trek – 90210’ish that he’s cut Klingon from the movie.

Yup that’s right. A classic era trek film where there is no spoken Klingon.

It’s total FRAKKIN BS.

“We actually had a sequence that ended up getting cut from the movie that took place on Rura Penthe, in a Klingon prison,” co-writer Alex Kurtzman told SCI FI Wire, explaining the deletion. “And there was definitely Klingon spoken in the movie, and it ended up getting cut.”

So while this new movie might look slick, by cutting out the Klingon this new film is cutting out the Warrior heart of the Star Trek Universe.

If they end up making Star Trek XII let’s sure hope it’s a full on Klingon Federation war!

Umm so now Chuck is the Neo?

What the frak was that? What a horrible BS way to end the season — and maybe the series.

So now instead of being just the intersect..they can download new skills into Chuck as he needs them.

The wedding on the beach was a nice ending — should have been a nice ending – to this show…

If Chuck comes back it’ll be very different..now he’ll be learning new skills on demand instead of just flashing.

So  now Dolls can be used to let people come back after they’re dead? That’s what happened in last night’s episode Haunted

What a concept! Just scan a person regularly and they there will be a ‘copy’ of them ready to implant into another body.

Overall a really interesting episode, I didn’t pick the son as the killer and we really didn’t know till the last 10 minutes. That’s a sign of a brilliant writer ..with a story that keeps us entertained and guessing.

What was the deal with Topher though? Is he frakking Sierra too?

What about Agent Ballard? He knows Milly is a doll yet he can’t do much about it or can he?

Last night’s episode Bad Dreams was another great piece of the pattern puzzle.

So we know that Olivia (or should we call her Olive?) was experimented on as a child..now we know it was Walter and Leonard Nimoy who were directly involved!

Amazing how everything comes back to Walter in this show? It’s actually a little annoying at this point.

How can the whole be pattern be about Walter?

Then again Walter is a whack job…and a character that we all love.

Great to hear the voice of Leonard Nimoy in this episode too...soon enough we’ll see him as William Bell founder of massive dynamics

On a whim (it was sitting on the library shelf) I picked up Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.  I read Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy years ago, but admittedly never got around to reading more in the series.

restaurantBoy have I been missing out.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (milliways) is fun and made for a great read. Adams has a weird/silly writing style that to be honest works really well as before bed reading. The chapters are short the scenes brief and without clutter, but still funny and entertaining.

So many fine scenes in this book I don’t know that i can pick one as a favorite…well maybe when the food comes out at Milliway and suggests which part of itself is best to eat.

caprica
Caprica, the Battlestar Galactica prequel is out today!
Sci Fi channel has ordered 20 hours of the Battlestar Galactica prequel but it all starts with this pilot available first on a direct to DVD.

After the tremendous dissapointment of the final Battlestar Galactica episode, Caprica represents another opportunity for us the fans to get back into the BSG universe before the FRAKKERS decided to fly their ships into the sun, become farmers and oh yeah Kara Thrace is an angel.

Here we get to see the colonies before the blasphemy of the final episode…a chance to start fresh and see things in a different light.

We’re excited for Caprica, we hope it’s as good as the Battlestar Galactica mini-series was – we’ll see…

Commander El – AKA Superman has a very different role on New Krypton than on Earth.

Now he’s in command of his own troops, trying to teach them how to use their powers…

But what about the whole caste system of Krypton? That’s what this issue is all about as the labor caste stage a rebellion…lots of action of one issue..

Somehow i suspect that the this will not be resolved easily and what this series will be about is a New Krypton civil war of sorts.

One thing is for sure after two issues this series is already shaping up to be one of the best Superman story lines of the last 50 years.

That’s the buzz…the show that started off so brilliantly but in season two has been mostly pure garbage is headed to the trash heap of scifi history.

We’re not surprised – no one should be. Sure some people liked the show this season but the ratings sucked.

We did like the last few episodes, the death of Riley, Derek Reese and the finale with John going back to the future...but it was a case of too little too late.

The show for the most part was — let’s be honest here – boring.

Episodes were poorly acted and produced with long periods of brooding nothingness. That’s not entertainment that’s just lazy writing.

The show had great potential and we were very keen on it in the beginning. Cameron is an interesting Terminator and she had so much potential that was largely unexplored. Derek Reese another fine character…

No this wasn’t Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor, and that was a major flaw from day one.

That and oh yeah – The FRAKKIN writers let us down.

Luckily for Terminator fans the glory days of Terminator are soon here. Terminator 4 : Terminator Salvation might be the best Terminator yet as we finally get to see the true John Connor hero of the resistance at long last.

As for the unfinished storyline of Sarah Connor Chronicles…well i suppose there is always the direct to DVD route and if that fails, hey books would work here too.

Doctor Who : Michelle Ryan AWESOME in Planet of the Dead April 13, 2009

The Doctor Who Easter special Planet of the Dead was on over the weekend – with Michelle Ryan (bionic woman, east enders) as the female lead.

The basic story was a cliche, Doctor gets stuck on a planet and he needs to stop the flying alien metal eating things before they come to earth story.

Michelle Ryan however was a sleek addition to the cliche , playing an art thief – turned wanna be Doctor Who companion…she even kisses the Doctor.

In the end though he doesn’t accept her as a companion, but hey we’ll see if that changes in the future….
